“Noisy”
This is simply a place for backpackers. We were not fully aware of that. The bathrooms are shared, yet they are cleaned regularly. Our only complaint was the noise in the building. Every person that walks by is loud and the footsteps echo in the hallway at all hours of the night. We barely slept for 2 nights. Considering this, it is certainly overpriced.
“Basic but clean”
The guesthouse is in a very convenient location for both trams and trains into the CBD, and there is plenty to do on Toorak road itself. The price of the room included a buffet breakfast (cereal & toast) and wifi internet. There is no en-suite bathroom, but the communal bathrooms were spotless and there are enough of them that I never had to wait. The staff were friendly and helpful - reception is manned 24/7 so you can leave your key without fear of being locked out. There was no air conditioning but the rooms had a fan and a heater and that was sufficient. If you're looking for something to drop your bags and sleep at night and nothing else, then this will suit you but if you want to spend time in your hotel room then you're going to be disappointed. As it is, there are so many things to do in Melbourne that you wouldn't want to wallow in your room anyway. I will definitely be coming back to Claremont Guest House and I will recommend it to friends travelling that way.
“Backpackers only”
I was planning to stay for 2 nights at the hostel and booked a single occupancy room. Unfortunately the rooms are very basic, are sigle glazed (lots of noise from outside), and the coridoors are very noisy in the evenings. After only getting a few hours sleep I checked out the next day and got another hotel downtown for not much more than what I had paid for a night here. OK if you're a backpacker on a budget, but don't expect comfort and solitude from a single occupancy room.
“Good as a hostel, not as a hotel”
Not a hotel... More of a backpackers / hostel, but a good one at that
“A nice, clean, no-frills hostel”
I booked the cheapest twin bunk room on short notice and expected it to be as pictured in the Expedia gallery, but it's about half the pictured width. Literally not enough room to swing a cat - but that said, it's a nice centrally located guesthouse with well-serviced amenities, and it is pretty quiet. The linen and beds were all clean, mattresses were new, there are plenty of bathrooms to go around and the check-in process was quick and easy. The continental breakfast features tea, coffee, juice and cereals, fruit and toast. I had to move my car into the secure parking lot, which is an additional charge per night, but there were a few 1 and 2 hour spots to park in on the street in the meantime. The staff are friendly, helpful and obliging. Overall I thought it was a nice place to stay, well positioned near South Yarra train station and Chapel Street, so everything is accessible from there. Just don't expect too many frills when you make your booking.
“Better than we thought”
I`d suggest them to: 1- Fix the beds in order to avoid noise as we move on the bed. 2- It would be nice to have a better breakfast. 3- We found a nail on the room`s floor.
“Good hotel for the price...”
located about 10 minutes from the city... this hotel is right next to the train station so it's really easy to get around. Don't spend hundreds of dollars on a hotel room.... go cheap. AND GO ON THE BUNYIP DAY TOUR TO THE PENGUIN PARADE... so worth it!!
“OK for the price”
arrived very late at night, slight delay with answering at the door, but front desk guy very nice, very friendly and apologised for the delay. Room very small, felt almost like a prison cell. Separate bathroom just down the hall. Room, bathroom could have been cleaner, but OK. Relatively speaking, the place is very cheap, so you get what you pay for, and as I said, what you get is a VERY SMALL, spartan room, without its own toilet/bathroom. Bonus is that they include (a quite reasonable) breakfast (in the dining room) - inclusion of any breakfast at all is pretty good, for this price. My advice, OK for the money, but if you can afford better, do so. Even F1 motels are better, though of course more expensive. For me, it was acceptable because I just needed a place to crash for a few hours.
“Nice character hotel in great location”
Hotel is right in the heart of shops, restaurants and transport. Character hotel in clean condition with all the basic facilities required. Friendly staff. The shared bathrooms are kept clean. The twin bunk bed rooms are very tiny with not a lot of room to move around. Go for something bigger if possible. Depending on time of stay and location of room the hotel can be very noisy. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Would we stay there again --- yes.
“Would stay there again on my next trip to Melbourne”
Very clean, staff very friendly and helpful, loved the free breakfasts... I felt very safe A great place to stay if you are going to be out all day and are using it to sleep, our room was small but very comfortable.
