“Surprise weekend away”

I picked this Citygate Albert Park. The taxi drivers know it as the Sebel Hotel on Queens Road (cost about $60 from International airport). I had requested a room on the quieter side of the building but we got one on the main 3 lane per direction side, so little noiser than I am used to. The room wasn't set up for 3 guests - only two towels and although I had specified 2 sgle beds in the bedroom side and the sofa made up, the bed was made as a king, but this was soon remedied. The TV in lounge and bedroom was a nice touch. Lovely cafe called "Purple" on St Kilda Rd (just around the corner) that had great breakfast menu - fat pancakes with strawberres and icecream for only $9. Had a divine dinner at Lime Restaurant - big kids meal for $10 with unlimited drink refills (500m up St Kilda's Rd - towards the city). Had a bar meal from hotel - ok, but didn't go to the restauarant - too expensive The pool was luke warm so had a short swim but it appeared clean. The spa only fits 3 people. Tried out Sauna but had to wait for it to heat. Staff were very helpful telling us about the Sunday Saver tram ticket, but didn't mention they sell quickly so we missed out getting it at the hotel at 10am. The card they give u telling u what tram no's u can catch is very helpful. St Kilda markets (Sunday) are only a 15 walk or 5 min tram away and are worth a look. Good value for money & 20 min tram to city centre. Reception gave us card with no's of trams to catch making it easy.

Area recommendations
St Kilda's - Markets on Sunday were good and the beach was nice. Harbour Town seemed to have good prices but didn't get much time there. Really enjoyed the King Tut Exhibition at the Museum.
Getting around
Super Sunday pass only $3.80 each for all day. Can be brought at any 7/11 or at the hotel if you get in early

“Could have been excellent!”

Overall an enjoyable stay, comfortable room clean and well appointed, liked the room darkening curtains which allowed us to sleep late. Downsides were, dirty towels not being replaced when taken from bathrooom even after requested, likewise with glasses supplied to room. We primarily chose this hotel for the indoor pool and gym facilities which appeared ideal when we checked them out, but this was soon spoiled by the lack of planning by hotel management. On the first visit the pool was a nice temperature and the spa was hot although the pool guy was trying to clean the pool with the hose, second visit, no maintenance guys but the pool was really cold, third visit, the pool guy was back again this time topping the pool up with freezing cold water, and the spa was only luke warm not good!! Another drawback is the only way to get to the pool from the towers as they call them is to parade through the main foyer lounge area in your swimming attire, not my wifes favorite pastime I might add. I suggest the hotel should do maintenance after the pool closes at night instead of during the day when guests may want to use it, and when dirty items are removed from the room they are replaced! These facts led to a dissapointing stay for us

Area recommendations
Melbourne CBD is a hive of activity with lots of stuff to do, for just about all interests, chinatown is excellent for restaurants although the choice can be a little overwhelming. likewise with Lygon St. with its mostly Italian fare. We particularly enjoyed the walk along the south side of the river with its many restaurants and cafes, and picked up a great lunch deal at one of them. Fitroy street also has a lot of restaurants and shops to browse and was a short stroll from the hotel.
Getting there
Booked a shuttle with sunbus to the hotel through expedia, fantastic service and a really friendly driver who filled us in on some of the history and suggested places to go.
Getting around
Leave the car at home! the tram system is fantastic with regular service and the day rider ticket is only $7 per adult. A free tram also circles the CBD so you can hop on and off aas much as you like once you get to the city. The trams also get to avoid the rush hour traffic most fo the time.
What to pack
Apparently Melbourne is well known for its very changeable climate, so take a mix of everything! We were lucky and had nice sunny days around 16-18 C.

“not for me”

service was very good, except once when i tried to call room service at 1055pm & could not get through. eventually got concierge who took my order. later i was called back to say i was too late for what i had ordered as the menu changed at 1100pm. i had waited that long. service was really top notch otherwise. 2 main problems - during a heatwave the airconditioning was not working properly. room was hot!!!!! i stayed 11 days and during this heatwave the pool was closed for maintenance for 5 out of those days!!!!! i will NOT be back

“A nice hotel...”

Good place to stay. A little out of the city, but transport is easy and close by, with a a row of food places close by. Little disspointed with time taken to answer requests e.g. extra towels but overall a really good hotel and would stay there again.

Traveller's tip
Some great lounge bars, clubs and restaurants on Chapel Street. Make sure the boys wear collars!

“Will certainly go back!!”

From the moment we drove to the front of the hotel I knew we were going to have a memorable few days in Melbourne. Without exception every staff member was attentive and nothing was a problem. I would highly recommend the hotel.
