Convenient place to stay. Matsumoto has some nice sights (castle, a couple of renovated old streets etc). Nice place for a short stay, but also good for Kamikochi day trip up into the Japanese Alps (easy walking trails in great scenery - but don't forget to carry a bear bell because black bears are sometimes sighted in broad daylight at even the popular spots, despite the number of people around). The temari balls are spectacular and make great souvenirs (a couple of souvenir shops near the top of the main road on the left approaching the castle, and there is a great ceramics/crockery/gift shop on the same street closer to the centre of town - also on the left looking towards the castle).
Good place at a good price
