Good for the price, the location was a bit out of the way from the port, but overall ok

An unexpected, enjoyable surprise! The friendly, helpful service from all the staff was excellent. It all made for a wonderful holiday in Marseilles.

Good stay

This hotel was just what my girlfriend and I needed for our stay in Marseille. Pretty good location, close to a Metro stop so we could get wherever we wanted. It was very hot in Marseille while we were there, so we were very thankful for the air conditioning. It was clean and the staff were friendly.

Acceptable low-price option

Posted 05-Jul-2013 on Hotels.com
Convenient location walking-distance from St. Charles station, metro, and the university. Less convenient for tourist locations. Room was not stellar, but certainly functional. Free wifi a plus. Showers are somewhat small and awkward. Staff was helpful, even when dealing with language barrier. Breakfast is acceptable, but vastly overpriced compared to the offerings at local bakeries. Overall, certainly an acceptable choice for the price point, but nothing exciting.

Good patio

Room is not so comfortable, 10-15 minutes walking to the Vieux port, but good patio, ping-pong table and friendly staff.

Near metro

Very good stay after changing to room away from street noise. Not obvious before booking that there was a strict rule "no eating" in room!! Am diabetic an cannot chance restaurant food. (I would NOT cook in the room.)

This was the 4th time I have stayed at Gens De Mer, and the standards of service and hygiene remain high, despite the hotel being quite old and traditional. Reception, catering and domestic staff were inevitably helpful and charming; we had breakfast in the fountained courtyard with the scent of lavender, Med.pine, olive, and other Mediterranean trees and plants wafting around. There were fresh croissants and fruit every morning. When we returned at night, we sat in the garden with our own wine, and the one night we ate there , in the courtyard, with food purchased from the supermarket 100 yards away, we were provided with plates, cutlery, wine glasses, and a wish of "bon appetit." Staff were always willing to take time to advise and give directions, plus free maps and sights suggestions, ring for taxis etc. Metro, trams and buses were 5 mins away, and Le Vieux Port a 15 minute walk. The room (comfort twin,) was small but adequate for a city centre reasonably-priced service, and there were clean sheets and towels daily, plus soaps, shampoo etc. Will certainly go again, until I find my own place in wonderful Marseille
