“Getting by in Marrakech”

My wife and I arrived late on a Friday night, very tired after two flights and a long sit in one airport. We were checked in promptly and taken to our room. It proved to be quite antiquated by North American standards. The bed proved satisfactory for our night's rest, but the bathroom was inadequate. The shower was simply a two foot by two foot pit in the floor, about four inches deep. The curtain covered one side partially and the toilet was fully exposed to water. We did not use it. The redeeming feature of Islane was the breakfast which, at check in, we were informed was included. It was served on the third floor terrace. When we arrived there in the morning, the sunlight was flooding in and some of the plastic covers had been rolled up. The food was excellent. The female chef fried eggs as we waited and flipped them like a pancake in the air to turn them. We were served excellent tea by a young male waiter who later came back to talk and with a map showed us where we were and the nearby sites. As chance would have it, we were stationed just a short block from Jemaa El Fna and we could look out over the busy street in front with its odd mixture of modern and antiquated modes of transportation. We were soon able to forget about the room and begin to enjoy Marrakech. The hotel had a small room in the lobby where we were allowed to leave our luggage after checking out. When we returned mid-afternoon we found many others had also taken advantage of the benefit.

“the place to stay in Marrakesh”

Friendly, helpful staff and great location. Breakfast on a terrace overlooking the main mosque. Literally 5 minutes from the main square. Great value for your money!

“Very handy”

Islane is in the medina and close to the main square. It is very handy. It is an older hotel with the attributes you would expect. The room was basic. There seemed to be no way to turn the airconditioning on. But it was cool, clean and had 2 king singles put together. Breakfast was adequate (probably too much bread) but you could get eggs. Service from staff varied but was at least adequate. Remember that there is a small local tax to pay at the end. Ask for a room that faces away from the road frontage. They are quiet.

Area recommendations
Being close to the main square is important.
When to go
We went in early november. The weather is good then, and stable.
Getting there
Flew with Atlas Air (Air Maroc subsidiary). Cold meals, exits blocked. Very small pitch.
Getting around
This close you can walk most places. Found petit taxis great providing you negotiate in advance.
Shopping
Don't shop on the first day. Orient yourself. Watch.
Dining
Dined at a variety of places but found eating in the main square entertaining, cheap and enjoyable.
Other
Take real care when booking trips and consider doing this only through the hotel. We did it independently and it was difficult.

“We'd stay there again”

Hotel Islane was a very good deal, recommended by my daughter's study abroad director in Rabat. She was right! Rooms were small but comfortable. TV worked but only 3 non-English stations and no DVD. REstaurant was expensive but good. Best things were the air conditioning, cleanliness, and location. One slight negative: we left an item with only sentimental value and when we tried to contact the hotel we received no response.

“Excellent location, BUT hotel not the best, could be ALOT better.”

First arriving, staff friendly, & there was hotel tax charge of £9 per person per day, 4 of us for 6 days-the airline apparently didn't pay this so we had to. Manager took our passports to copy i assume, all was ok-rooms were ok, 2star as expected. One room had no A/C for the entire 6 days, even though we complained about it,nothing was done-baring in mind this was summer, 45+degrees.Breakfast was basic, & left over for the next morning, dry & had flies all over. One traveler was a diabetic so insulin storage was a problem, the fridge didn't even cool down,it was warm, the manager said he would fix this, but it wasn't resolved, there were other insulin users in the same hotel as well. We wanted to go for day trip to see The Atlas mountains and the hotel manager quoted us (£25) each. £1000 total, but we haggled with a taxi just outside the hotel, got it for 400 for the 4 of us for the day.DON'T GET RIPPED OFF!,better to go to a taxi and haggle that way, hotels are known to be expensive,The manager seemd annoyed at this on the last night, didn't even bother to say bye etc,not that it matters-we got our bargain day excursion. Location of hotel perfect, close to Majorelle, bahai palace, opposite the mosque. The hotel itself is a let down, but then again being so close people will stay there regardless as it is cheap/ideal location.WARNING: Do not buy bottled water from the Djeema market, the water is refilled god knows from where instead buy from the postofice in the square.

Area recommendations
Good neighbourhood, on a busy main road, the most famous road in Marrakech. Area good, too many beggers, more than i visited 2 years ago, the Moroccan govt are saying they are doing something about this, but it doesn't seem they are. One girl wanted my drink i was drinking, fair enough, and another wanted my cousin's sunglasses!!!! Everywhere you go, you get hassled for money and more money, it gets tiring, by the end of the trip, only 5-6 days we were all ready to snap. It became laughable. Beware of the water bottle in the market, they are refilled and will try to sell them off, i argued with one of the orange juice stalls for my money back, and got it eventually after being verbally abused, i gave as good as i got!! The shops next to the post office are good to buy water bottle from,& easy to make phone calls abroad from the postoffice. Taxi prices vary from drivers and destinations etc, horse calaches are available, although i felt very sad for the horses always running up and down so out of principle wasn't comfortable using them. Look out for pick pockets especially at night in the market, people will try to sell you anything!!!! walk away if you don't like the price, they will come running after you with a slightly lower price, keep haggling until you want to pay what you want to pay.Overall a good trip, a few idiots ruined it, as did the beggers and unfair treatment to animals i found, especially the horses and finches locked in tiny tiny cages for the amusement.

“Disappointing”

The hotel was in good condition but the rooms were a disappointment. I'm not sure that our sheets were changed or if the bathroom was cleaned after the previous guests left.....

“A find”

This is an old and characterful hotel, nicely maintained, in an outstanding location for all the sights of Marrakech. The rooms are quite small but immaculately clean. I was unhappy with the original room offered (next to the kitchen), and the staff were very helpful in offering a better option as soon as one became available. The staff were completely charming but it may not be a bad idea to have some French language if you can (this applies to the whole country). The inclusive breakfast is basic but sufficient. The panoramic restaurant terrace is a joy. I would definitely stay there again.

Area recommendations
Take a walk down to the Mellah to see a souk used by Marrakechis (there are others often next to the various city gates), it's interesting to see the very different shops. If you need a quiet break (from partner, family or city), take a picnic directly over the road from the Hotel Islane into the Kotoubia Mosque gardens and listen to birdsong in the shade of orange trees and palms among ranks of scented roses. It's a rare oasis in a sometimes quite demanding town. Don't miss the Maison Tiksiwin (just around the corner from the Bahia Palace), it's a wonderful small museum with displays about the peoples of Morocco, the Sahara, Sahel and West Africa and puts Marrakech in its context as a major centre on the trans-Saharan trade routes. One of the best independent museums in the world.

“Perfectly Located”

If you expect luxury for this price then get real but the hotel is so well located that the dated condition of the hotel was not a problem at all. A bit of a funny smell in the road but it soon went and lets face it, you're hardly ever in the room anyway. The hotel is two mins from the main square and right across the way from the Koutoubia. Fantastic. My only qualm would be the limited amount of toilet paper in the room! Take extra! Staff ok but a few reception guys were a bit ignorant but think that was the language barrier. Print off several copies of expedia confirmation as hotel will take one off you. Overall would reccomend this to travellers of all ages. Not bad

Traveller's tip
When you get money at the airport, ask the guy for some small notes as i ended up tipping my porter 100 dirhams when only 5-10 dirhams is expected!

“Worth every penny”

Great location right in the centre of Marrakech. Wonderful breakfast terrace overlooking the Koutoubia Mosque and fresh breads and pastries every morning. Hotel itself a bit shabby but that just gave it charm. Reception staff always helpful.

Traveller's tip
Jemaa El Fna is abosolutley brilliant for dinner. The food is great with an atmosphere that you will find nowhere else in the world.

“Great Location!”

We stayed at the Islane in September. The location of the hotel is great, no more than a 5 minute walk along a main road from the main square and souks. However being opposite the biggest mosque in Marrakesh (and it being Ramadan!) there is quite a lot of noise throughout the night from the prayers and the main road. Other than that, v.clean and tidy, bed was really comfy and the location made up for all the noise! Felt very safe.

Traveller's tip
I would recommend going into the main square for your evening meal. Many of the restaraunts around the outside of the square have brilliant terraces which enable you to have a birds eye view of the bustle below. Food is so reasonable and great quality!
