Beautiful location for a couple of nights. Loved the animals. Only thing that let it down was the restaurant. The food sounded delicious on the menu but that’s where it stopped. Food was expensive and lacked any sort of flavour.

Kia ora CorrinaThank you for taking the time to provide us contructive feedback, it is appreciated. We are actively working on our chef shortage so we can urgently address the menu. We are pleased you expereinced all Lochmara had to offer and enjoyed the animals and wildlife. We hope the next time you visit you will have an improved food expereince.Ngā mihi nuiNiki
The property was a slice of heaven on earth. But for foodies like me I would request either of 2 options - expand the menu or provide microwave/bbq facilities.

Nice place...friendly staff...would recommend for an overnight stay but wouldnt recommend longer...focus is more on day trippers from Picton not on those paying top dollar to stay in the accommodation. The water taxi is charged on top of accommodation which should be included if you are staying I feel, as there is no road to drive there... Room service doesnt get done till very late in the day and we had to chase up towels, toilet paper etc. Maybe not enough staff but maybe 2 seperate staff groups would work better...one for day trippers one focused on accommodation.
Overal a relaxing stay in a comfortable room.

Kia ora GrahamThank you for taking the time to provide us constructive feedbck, it is always appreciated and we will review your ideas with the team. For the water taxi we are unable to include it in the room rates as we have people stay with us who are walking the Queen Charlotte Track and don't need the boat, and others arrive to stay on their own boats, and those who head out on our water taxi. We are glad you enjoyed your stay in and hope the remainder of your holidays are wonderful.Ngā mihi nuiNiki

Really enjoyed our stay here, staff were friendly and helpful, room had everything that we needed with added bonus of a sea view. Lochmara has many activities to do we especially enjoyed kayaking as we got to see seals. The restaurant had good food and great service. We were walking the QCT and would recommend staying here as we felt it was well worth the detour.

Thank you for taking the time to review Lochmara. Much appreciated. When guests provide us with their arrival details it does assist us to prioritize rooms. Not always possible but we do try.

Hello Aimee,
Thank you for taking the time to review Lochmara, it is great to get positive feedback. We have had the same executive chef for 5 years and our kitchen team consistently delivers..
we would love to see you return
Awesome location, Lodge is really nice, food outstanding, service great. Grounds around the lodge are in good condition but it’s such a shame that all the amazing work that had been done up above - hen house, bee aviary, Crumpy’s Camp, garden area has not been maintained
Property is amazing. Room is AWFUL. Worse than a motel 6. Not sure how this place has a 4 star designation, the room itself doesn’t even deserve 2 stars. That asides, staff is also great.

Driving around New Zealand, we followed sat nav toward Lochmara to the end of the road. There we were informed it was a 5-hour hike to the resort or a 1-hour drive back the way we had come followed by a $120 water taxi. We also wanted to get away early, which we were told would not be possible. If you click on check in information, you can see the resort is not accessible by road, but such information should flash up in big letters before booking. It was unclear enough that we did not see it until the time we expected to arrive at our room, I would be very careful before booking as it is very very remote!

Response from Bo on 27 Feb 2020
Hello Neil,
I apologise you were inconvenienced by our location,
The water taxi cost was for a private transfer out of schedule. Lochmara does not operate a water taxi service at 0500 in the morning and we are not the only water taxi company in Picton.
These instructions below are on the first page before considering booking Lochmara
.Special check-in instructions
There is no road access to Lochmara Lodge. The lodge can be accessed via water transport from Picton (surcharge), which the property can arrange for you (with advance notice) or by walking in off the Queen Charlotte Track.
If you discover you have booked without realising you can't drive here, please cancel immediately or contact us.
Stunning views. Quiet area. Fair bit to do for young families

Thank you Kevin for your review and pleased you enjoyed your stay. It's great to see the kids outside enjoying their environment.and learning at the same time.
We stayed two nights. It is remote and only reached by 20 min water taxi or hiking. It is a lovely, picturesque setting in Queen Charlotte Track. People are very friendly and helpful, especially Bo at the desk. There are lots of trails to walk around with lots of unusual and comical sculptures. Kayaks and paddle boards are free to use. There is an underwater observatory. All in all, it’s a fun, scenic place with good food and friendly service. The only food available is in the cafe. The lodge has a very large property with lots of animals. They even have glow worms that are fun to see when dark. Highly recommend this unique lodge for fun and relaxation.

Hello Mary,
I am so please you enjoyed your stay and stayed awake long enough to see the Glow worms. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your holiday
What a beautiful area to explore. This property is positioned in a stunning location with access to the Queen Charlotte track and wonderful views. We really enjoyed our stay but the place is just a little tired. It is up for sale and I have no doubt the new owners will spruce it up a little. I didn’t like all the signs around the place about paying extra for activities. You’d think when you pay top dollar for a property , you are not asked for a gold coin to view the eel feeding! I also didn’t like the fact that the day visitors share the hotel facilities. Perhaps they should have their own area as it gets a bit crowded in the restaurant and lake front area. But, we did enjoy our stay. The room is large, the bed comfortable and the food lovely.

Thank you for your review and pleased you found your bed was comfortable and enjoyed the food.
We do not charge for guests to view the animal feeding. If guests would like the opportunity to go inside the Kakariki (native parakeets) enclosure, and hand feed these beautiful birds a gold coin donation is mentioned.
The gold coin donation, supports our ongoing work we provide, at no cost to the Department of Conservation and Project Janzoon in teh Abel Tasman National Park
The Lochmara cafe building and the Wing of 7 rooms and reception and, the boat shed were completely repainted in August 2019. Carpets in the Weka and Tui chalets replaced. All outdoor furniture repainted and extra tables provided. All out door umbrellas replaced and extras added
The outdoor areas of the cafe were completely remodeled August 2019 by removing the dead grass and replaced with decorative stones. January and February have been very dry windy and may have offered this appearance.
I am happy you enjoyed your stay.

NO ACCESS BY CAR! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!
BE AWARE THAT THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THIS HOTEL BY CAR! We drove from Picton, using navigation. After two hours of trying to find the hotel we called for directions. We called multiple times with no answer (between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m.) We finally called the number for the cafe there and were informed that the hotel reception was closed for the day. When we asked for directions we were told that the only acess to the hotel was either on foot via 2 hour hike, or by water taxi from Picton, but again that reception was closed! We were told to call back in the morning to discuss with reception. Multiple calls the next morning with no answer! The only negative experience in over two weeks in New Zealand.

Hello,
Thank you for your comments and I apologise you had trouble finding us and that we were unable to assist you in the evening.
Yes you are correct, we are not accessible by car.
this information is available on all websites.
Google maps unfortunately thinks we are.
The cafe staff were correct with the information they provided you.
.
Yes our reservation desk closes at 5.00 pm when the last scheduled water taxi leaves Lochmara and our cafe is available to answer any questions.
The last scheduled service departs Picton at 3.15 pm with non scheduled services available to be booked if this does not suit
There are 4 water taxi companies available online including our dedicated service
We do request from guests how they are arriving so we can assist with arrangements before their arrival day if required.
We do have a lot of people who choose to walk, kayak in
I was not aware of unanswered calls the following morning. and apologise for this
I do hope you enjoyed the rest of New Zealand and had a safe travel home
Immersed in nature and trails and water activities. The staff overall was fantastic and helpful. Reception staff was cold and judgmental. We were given a small amount of wifi and told that is not the reason we were visiting this lodge. We couldn't download our pictures from our devices. Wifi was advertised as free. We didn't need someone else to micromanage our wifi and or tech usage.

Hello and thank you for your feedback.
Lochmara does provide free wifi to every guest. Due to our remote location wifi coverage is limited to certain areas of the property with suggestions of how to best utilise this, Details are in all room compendiums to assist.
Wonderful peaceful spot only accessible by water taxi. Somewhat rustic (no AC or TV’s) but we were able to leave the sliding doors to the balcony open all night without any bug influx. Access to Queen Charlotte Track and all sorts of water sports available, plus feeding of parakeets and other animals. Excellent restaurant onsite.

Thank you, wonderful thing with the doors open is the birdsong in the morning
Overall it was a good trip, could have been better. There were several lovely members of staff who actively improved our stay however the member of staff on reception seemed annoyied with us with every interaction we had, not sure what we did wrong. The restaurant is expensive, I appreciate the location adds a premium but the quality of meals wasn’t particularly high to justify the high price. Rooms were spotlessly clean but basic and feel slightly tired. Amazing art everywhere and a beautiful setting.
Stunning place with great service and an amazing menu, was not disappointed! Bonus was kayaking right next to the dolphins which the staff said was very rare

HI Donna,
Pleased you enjoyed your stay, dolphins are frequent visitors to our bay but you were lucky for them to allow you to be so close. I hope you enjoyed your walk out
Excellent stay - we wish we could have stayed longer! Nature surrounding the lodge was stunning and the highlight was kayaking and doing the Queen Charlotte Track day walk to the lookout point.

Hello Lina,
Please you enjoyed your stay, we do have a caring team of people here. the 4 piglets born Christmas day are all doing well
This resort has a lot of interesting activities to check out, is close to Picton and had friendly helpful staff who went the extra mile, literally in our case, as we got a bit lost.
My husband and I travelled from Auckland to Lochmara for a 3 night getaway. It was a was a whole day of travelling each way but well worth it. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a nice view. It was so relaxing sitting on our patio in the early evening with a bottle of wine, just watching the beautiful bay. The food in the restaurant was amazing as was the outlook. There are free kayaks to use and theres's lots to see when walking all around the grounds. Also plenty hammocks to relax in. Hammockville amongst the trees right on the waters edge was my favourite . I could lie there and watch the stingrays go by. We did the walk up the lookout on Queen Charlotte Track. Steep in places but so worth it. We had a great few days and I would highly recommend Lochmara Lodge.

8/10 Good
Colin, Walked in off the Queen Charlotte track - about 4km / 1 hour walk off track.
Great views over the bay. This is a very good 4 star property. Rooms clean and functional. Excellent food and friendly service. Wine list could be more extensive with some quality wines. Some great artistic walks around the property. This is my second time this year, so definitely recommend as a stop along the way.
Unfortunately it was raining on both days I have stayed but if your looking for a peaceful relaxed location to stay. Disconnect from reality-with no TV.
We escaped to the Queen Charlotte Sounds for some R&R and thats what we got. An eclectic art trail around the site and amazing views made for some picturesque hang out spots. Friendly staff and excellent food made our break for our 2 day escape on the sounds. Keen to return one day.
