“interesting manila hotel option”

Overall rating for this hotel is exactly right -- 4 1/2 stars. has all the elements of a 5-star, just a little off in some (minor) regards. (there are only 2 real 5-star hotels in manila -- the Pen and the Shangrila Makati). The Sofitel's rooms are attractive and well maintained. And service and food are both good. But what makes this place special (or problematic) is location. It is pretty close to the airport and right on the water and built so as to screen out your views of manila. Beautiful pool and grounds facing the water. I think this is only real resort hotel in manila. Flip side of the location is that you are pretty isolated -- no shops or restaurants nearby, and with manila traffic it can take a long time to get anywhere. So if you are looking for a great place for a romantic weekend or to take the kids or maybe a place for a business conference away from the crush of manila -- this is a great option.

“Overly rated”

This hotel is overly rated but I guess different guests have different expectations in hotel quality & service. I have been to many countries and have stayed at different hotels. I can tell you that for the price I have paid to Sofitel Philippine Plaza compared to what you get back in terms of room amenities is no comparison to the less costly hotels. However I commend the warm & hospitable Filipino hotel staff! They are very warm and friendly. I recently stayed at the Crowne Plaza in China and the quality of their rooms are impeccable! I was expecting better room quality especially from Sofitel Phil. Plaza.

Area recommendations
Makati, Greenhills, the distances are not far except for local traffic which makes it feel very far.

“LOOKING FORWAD TO MY RETURN IN NOVEMBER”

My favourite Hotel in Asia. It is located in the Manila Bay and is approximately 30 minutes to the International Airports. The staff are are very friendly with the typical Filipino Charm. The service was excellent. There is nothing better than having a drink in the swimming pool bar/restaurant and enjoying the Manila sunset. The restaurant food is excellent, if a little expensive. I cannot think of a better hotel to stay in Manila, especially, if you are visiting the city for vacation.

Area recommendations
Visit the Asian Mall located near the Hotel, which is the biggest shopping centre in Asia and by the seaside. There are numerous historical sites in Manila and shopping is very cheap. I loved bargaining in the antique shops. I recommend to visit the Pagsanjan falls, for a day trip. it includes a river cruise by canoe with spectacular water falls. Also visit the Taal Volcano in Tagaytay City and Baguio city.

“Gouged”

Anything you want could be had, if you have zero concern about being overcharged. The bay view wonderful, the pool beautiful, the buffet amazing. Found that the rooms were too cold and the ala carte foods just not good. The last straw though was no free airport shuttle. My review might have been better had I not just stayed at the Manila Peninsula a month earlier, which I found equally luxurious without the exorbitant add-on expenses. Examples; a php500 phone card cost php580. At Peninsula, 520. Also, a daily php50 charge automatically added for local charity. To remove it, you have to embarrassingly demur. Nice idea, but I like to pick my own charities. And checking your email will cost you more than you expect, be prepared.

Area recommendations
The O2 marina had a fantastic jellyfish aquarium. The Taal volcano in Tagaytay is a couple of hours away, but worth it.

“Best Hotel To Stay In Manila”

Stayed at three hotels during my visit to Manila. Out of all three, overall, I was most pleased with the Sofitel. Comfortable, food was great with a wide selection, pool and fountains are just right, and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The spa was amazing and it was one of the best massages I have ever had. When I do return to Manila, I will definitely be staying only at the Sofitel.

Area recommendations
I also recommend traveling to other islands in the Philippines, I highly recommend Bohol (Amorita Resort) and El Nido, Palawan (Lagon).

“bad experience”

stayed there during my wedding weekend. Wanted 2300 php for their breakbast buffet, ande 300 php for a glass of pineapple juice, the prices were ridiculous. Elevators were very slow, only half of them were working. Wanted 5000 php for taking pics outside, what a rip-off. Told them i was leaving. There was banging on my hotel walls all night, and they couldnt solve the problem. Will never go there again, dont appreciate getting ripped off at their over-priced facilities.

“This place was GREAT”

I don't always give glowing reviews of 4 or 5 star hotels, but this place met and surpassed all expectations. I have visited over one third of the world's countries so have stayed in many places. There are few I would heartily recommend, but this is one! From the lobby greetings, to the floral displays (wow!) to the food in the club lounge... all great.

“Nice to be there, but it could be better”

Of course the Sofitel Philippine Plaza is nice. The entire staff is polite and friendly and efficient. Everyone is prepared to help when required. As well, they employ only the most attractive workers so there is always eye candy around. A specific complaint I have is about the exhorbitant prices. The buffet breakfast is unaffordable at 35 USD. The buffett dinner was 40 USD, not including a glass of wine. But how good could a buffet dinner possibly be,sitting there under the heat lamps for so long? At the business centre 30 minutes of internet usage was 500 pesos (= 12 CAD). At the circular driveway, hotel taxis are plentiful, but city taxis are mysteriously in short supply. The hotel taxis can whisk you to whereever you need to go for 3 or 4 times the metered rate. Also, please don't use the room phone to call a local cell phone - a 10 minute call to a local cell phone cost me 1000 pesos ( = 24 CAD). Truly shocking! This seems normal in the Philippines. As well, please note that the distances are vast in that neighbourhood, so there is no walking anywhere. A walk to Malate would be through a slightly rough neighbourhood, so a taxi is required. All in all, I would say it is a pleasure to be at the Sofitel, but please note that you will be massively dinged at every turn.

Area recommendations
Go to the Wensha Spa in Pasay City, 5 minutes by taxi from the Sofiten, for a wonderul and inexpensive massage and spa experience.
