“Managua”

We enjoyed our stay at the Crowne Plaza in Managua. It is ideally situated. Friendly service. Buffet breakfast was excellent. Good internet. Request a room with a view of the lake on a high floor.

Area recommendations

A trip to Grenada is a must as is a trip to the market town of Masaya. Buses are cheap $1.00 per person

“Non - Smoking Issues”

When i checked in i had asked for a non-smoking room and at reception i was asked to sign a non-smoking waver that would cost me USD $150 if i smoked in the room. the lady in the room next to me was smoking and it was a non-smoking floor. each room has an interconnecting door and the stench drifted through easily. I complained at the front desk and their said they would look into it. There response was to spray my room with air freshner. When the lady next door lit up again in 30 minutes and re stunk out my room i complained again and they said they would do something about it. An hour later after another 3 cigarettes i went downstairs and asked to be put in a non-smoking room that did not stink of fresh cigarette smoke. I had to sacrifice my view and the man at the front desk was surly with me for the rest of my stay but at least i was not sleeping in a cigarette smoked out room.

“Do not visit the Crowne Plaze”

It took the front desk 30 minutes to see us. We got our room and the first night the bar across the street from the hotel was playing death metal so loud it shook the windows of the hotel. We complained and asked for a room on the other side of the hotel but they refused. We slept in the lobby until after midnight when the music finally stopped. The third day we were there they sent someone into our room while we were in it to spray for bugs. I was working at the time and had to leave the room for an hour while it aired out. I paid $6 per day for internet and it was extremely slow and I had to call multiple times for them to fix it. When calling the front desk, the only phone that worked was the one in the bathroom. The area is not safe at all and I don't recommend going anywhere on foot even during the day. If you are white, you will be surrounded by people asking for money. The hotel is in the middle of an extremely bad part of town and if you want to do some sight seeing from the window of a taxi you will see some really dangerous and deplorable conditions that people are living in. The bed was comfortable and the food was excellent but other than that this hotel was probably the worst I have ever been in. You would be better off in a safer location in a cheaper hotel than in this. Don't be fooled by the Crowne Plaza name. It won't be what you would expect.

Area recommendations

I would recommend you avoid Managua altogether. Try Granada if you must visit Nicaragua.

“A great place”

I had to stay in 2 hotels in Managua, this was by far the better one.. Gym was very good, pool clean.. service exellent.. masseuse unlocked 28 hours of airplane journey, but dont bother with the sauna.. as it has no coals.. Food a good standard.. I will say there again when I need to go back.
