Let down from Pergola Hotel

My fiancé and I booked this hotel by choice for 5 nights. However, when we arrived at reception in Solana we were told that we had been moved to another hotel, Pergola hotel and spa, which was 'the same hotel' a few minutes away. This was due to maintenance work which would have made our room in an unsafe condition to stay in. So they called us a complimentary taxi to take us. I knew from my previous research that it was a different hotel but we thought maybe it would still meet our standards. And for this reason I will leave the same review for Solana because it is 'the same hotel'!! Welcome to Pergola...the receptionist was very friendly and welcoming, and knew how to do her job. The room space at Pergola was very ample with a lounge and kitchen area as well as a separate bedroom. The twin beds had been put alongside each other to make a double (I specifically requested a double), and one of the beds had a dip and made a noise everytime you sat on it. Fine, we could make do. My fiancé came back to the room after a day out in Melleiha and I saw him stomping about in the corners of the room...trying to squash the ants which were also staying with us. I went into the kitchen at one point and a cockroach ran across the work surface. That was enough for us. I went to reception at Pergola to complain and a different receptionist was there. In short we were told that it is normal to have bugs at this time of the year and in this climate.

Friendly hotel in North of Malta

Pros: Friendly, clean and well appointed.
Location: Location is good in the town, as long as you are not looking for a hotel on the beach. Great bus service to everywhere on the island.
Staff very helpful and all the facilities are very good. Spacious rooms! Only real downside was no car parking and the off street parking near the hotel was difficult. Otherwise we would definitely return to the hotel.

Great hotel for the price we paid

Friendly staff, great food in the Tosca restaurant, Charlotte in the Puccini bar makes a great cocktail and is very pleasant. Please note it is on a busy main road and can be quite noisy from early morning till late at night, unfortunately we had a room at the front of the hotel, also the beds are not very comfortable. There was a party of teenage school children staying but they were extremely well behaved. All in all a very pleasant stay.

Location: Small village not a lot to do excellent bus service
Very disappointing complaints not taken seriously, water cascading from bathroom ceiling, when maintenance came he removed an ice cream tub full of water and advised it always happens when the room above has a bath. This should not happen. Also repeatedly reported that remote not working batteries changed but would not operate off standby this was not taken seriously and the four days we were there we had to manually change and operate the television. The TV for a four star was a 12inch which was pathetic. On day one the bathroom sink wouldn't empty as the plunger at the back of the taps was stuck, this was reported but the receptionist had forgotten to pass this on so was not dealt with until the following day. We were offered a bottle of wine to compensate later found out with the set menu this was included. Too many othe issues

Pros: The staff were very friendly, although we did not like the housekeeping staff turning up at 8am despite the "do not disturb" note on the door.
Cons: Pin up a map of all the bus routes and associated timetables in the reception; the staff was unable to help with bus queries. More working TV channels
Location: The location is great if you like being in a traditional village and not directly by the sea. There are plenty of buses and nearby bus stops.
Overall we were pleased with our stay at this hotel, especially since we had a very good offer so the value for money was excellent. The breakfast buffet was very good, apart from the drinks; on offer were very sweet/artifical fruite juices or terrible/watery coffee from a machine. The room was OK, but in my view not in the category of a 4-star hotel - more a 3-star hotel. The decor in the rooms was outdated, the bathroom could do with a revamp, the air conditioning unit was very noisy and it would be impossible to sleep with having it on at the same time; the fridge in the room was also very noisy. Whilst we ordered a double-bed room, it was in fact 2 single beds on a metal frame pushed together, and the mattresses were rather worn out. There was also no mattress protector - only another bed sheet, which in my view is not enough given that people sweat during the night. The kitchen unit in the studio rooms is ok for having a quick drink or maybe a toast, but I would never attempt to cook anything in it. The sound insulation of the hotel is very poor; you can hear the people from adjacent rooms speaking, snoring, using the bathroom etc. In the mornings, there seems to have been lots of chair dragging, door slamming etc. I would expect a 4-star hotel to offer free wifi in rooms and not just poor wifi in the reception area. There should also be free towels for spa use. The gym is very old and some of the equipment I wouldn't even touch because they are rusty/outdated.

Wonderful staff

We experienced several problems while at the Solana - the AC turned itself off regularly, only blew hot air and couldn't be turned to a cooler setting. When I booked the booking indicated there was free internet available in rooms but it turned out to be only in public areas. The employees were fantastic and tried very hard to help, unfortunately they are let down by a poor establishment.

Quiet part of Malta

Location: A bit far from La Valette if you plan to take the city bus every day... WWII shelter, the Bay and the church are the 3 things to see there
If you are looking for a quiet place to stay in Malta, it's a good choice. I had the economic room, so a very old and minuscule TV and tiny bedm but I wasn't there to watch TV so its all good. The staff is friendly and professional, the hotel is clean. Only down side for me was the noise (I could hear other room fan, toilet etc. as clear as day), but then again : just don't take the economic room :)

Rooms need some updating to be 4* standard

The Hotel Solana was rated as 4*, but needs some updating to be of this standard. I paid a very cheap price for the stay, so comparing what I could get for the same price in England it was good, but I would have not been happy if I had paid full price. The public areas are very nice, the breakfast is good with a hot and cold buffet, the bar food is good and competitively priced, but the rooms are dated. The bathroom sink's surface was crazed and the bath screen old. Only 2 liquid soap dipensers in the bathroom, no other toilettries. There was a 15 inch screen portable TV, I would have expected newer flat screen. One day the bed wasn't made and the coffee cups weren't cleaned. Only 2 sachets of coffee, 2 tea bags and 2 sachets of milk powder were provided. The double bed was made up of 2 single mattresses, nothing unusual in that, except they had been put on the bed crossways, so an uncomfortable ridge across the bed where your bottom rests and every movement opened up the gap between them! So we had to rearrange the mattresses on the first night so we could get comfortable. The hotel doesn't have a car park, you have to park in the surrounding back streets. On the first night we ended up parking in what I swear was the last free spot in town which was a good 5 mins steep uphill walk away from the hotel. Good job we only had hand luggage! Not the hotels fault, but there is continual traffic noise day and night, so get a room on the back if you want to avoid this.
