“They really do care about your satisfaction!”

Overall, I was happy with the hotel, the staff was friendly, especially those that worked the front desk; always pleasent and willing to help (provide tours, bus, ferry, and other Malta related information). the location near the ferry is convinient if going back and forth between the islands. peaceful and relaxing.

Area recommendations
The Hondoq bay is a nice place to swim, the Azure Window in Dwijra is worth the trip, the fort in Victoria. However, the Gozo side is rather small and if you have the time, try to visit a few of its bays, each has its own beauty (i.e. Marsalforn, Ix-Xlendi,...etc.) On the big Island, I personally enjoyed the Il-Mdina, Sleima, St. Giljan, and Bugibba, not to say that there are not a lot more that you could enjoy; one can't go worng when looking at the beautiful sea every turn of the road. Enjoy!

“Would certainly go back”

We were a little disappointed as led to believe the hotel was on a beach, which it certainly is not. There are few sandy beaches on Gozo, with the nearest a 20 minute bus drive away. We were also led to believe the hotel has indoor facilities, which it does not. However, the staff were pleasant, some more helpful than others, as we did not really find out about the centre of the village being just round the corner until our last day! Also, we did not know about the free bus to the Capital every day, and were instead directed to the local public bus stop. The food was good, if a little expensive, and the drinks from the bar were quite expensive, which we did not realise until paying our bill! We would go back, as the view of the harbour is stunning, and overall staff were pleasant, and rooms were clean and comfortable.

Area recommendations
The Island of Comino, absolutely stunning! The Blue Lagoon with crystal clear waters for swimming and snorkelling, or just walk round the island, and see if you can spot its 4 inhabitants! Victoria is lovely (the capital) and has a beautiful Citadel. Also recommend a visit to Dwerja Bay where you will see the beautiful Azure Window. The open top bus tour is a good way to see most of the island.
Getting around
Would recommend going down to the harbour in Mgarr and organising your own cruises round the island or crossings to Comino, as organised boat trips through the hotel are much more expensive. Go down to the harbour and haggle! It's much more fun!

“Gozitan idyll”

I loved this hotel. It could not be more perfectly placed for a stay on Gozo, but what made it special was the superb service provided by the staff. This hotel has not one but two restaurants in the autumn and apparently a third en plein air in the summer months. I sampled both the food at Il Migiarro and also the cuisine their new Thai restaurant offers and can assure you the quality of the food alone was 5-star (in a 4-star hotel) but you have the considerable added value of a most delightful restaurant manager who not only offers service of the highest quality, but also does so without arrogance or intrusion. He even helps his staff clear tables at breakfast and serves piping-hot, strong coffee himself at breakfast - something I have never seen in France, Germany or Italy for example. The reception staff at the hotel are also excellent. They aren't perfect and mistakes (as we all do,) but go the extra mile for every client. The icing on the cake is probably the courtesy minibus service, provided by the inimitable George. The hotel will bus you, free of charge, to the capital, Victoria on a daily basis and also runs a shuttle between the two glorious sandy beaches - Ramla and Hondoq. I was on a budget, so stayed in an internal-facing room. I would heartily recommend one of their superior rooms if you can afford it; they are superbly appointed, have huge superking beds, attractive bathrooms and spacious terraces with stunning views of the harbour and Gozo straits.

Area recommendations
Ramla Bay - the equivalent of an area of outstanding natural beauty in the UK.
When to go
Out of season, but ideally in September or October when the sea is still really warm
Getting there
This is not easy, so I would recommend hiring a car (if you are brave enough) or book a transfer through Expedia. The Gozo ferry is quite an experience, taking twice as long in rough weather and not having a facility for foot passengers at the Maltese side!

“A bit basic being The Grand hotel”

Signs of work going on, the standard room are a bit below standard for what we paid no tea and coffee making things in our room I requested to have them put in the room twice at reception but no joy. Hotel web states wifi in rooms but not ours! This was our second visit to The Grand and our last.

“A Gem of the Mediterranean”

I recently stayed at this hotel in Gozo with my partner. I was not sure what to expect, as I have never been to Malta or to it's smaller neighbouring island of Gozo before. I was very pleasantly surprised with both the surrounding setting and also with the Hotel. The Hotel was in a lovely location, just minutes from the small harbour of Mgarr. It has a very nice bar and restaurant at very reasonable prices, including a rooftop terrace where they do very nice buffets of different styles depending on the day. Other aspects to mention include the very lovely pool area with beautiful views of the harbour and surrounding area. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a peaceful break in a lovely part of the meditteranean.

“"Brilliant hotel, friendly staff, lovely food, great romantic getaway"”

We had a wonderful time staying at the Grand Hotel Malta, in Mgarr on the island of Gozo. The standard of the 4 star hotel was excellent, with extremely friendly and helpful staff, very tasty and well priced food in the restuarant, and a great location just near the Gozo ferry terminal. Our Country View room was spacious and clean, with plenty of amenities, and more importantly great views over the Mgarr bay and over to Malta. Parking was also easy in the underground basement, however I imagine it gets fuller in the high season. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel!!

Area recommendations
I would highly recommend Gozo to people who want a relaxing and fun holiday away from the madness and unpleasantness of Malta. If you are looking for a little more adventure than a fish & chips beach holiday in Malta then Gozo is for you, as it is less spoiled, has smaller resorts (old fishing villages) with tasty traditional food, quieter wilder beaches (Ramla bay is great), interesting cultural sites and beaufitul locations. The city of Victoria (Rabat) is a real gem, probably like Malta cities 30 years ago, with small local restaurants, a relaxed market and small glass shops, and the very interesting Cittadella and churches. I would highly recommend hiring a car to explore this quirky island, it is very easy driving on Gozo (even in Victoria) and nowhere is more than half an hour away from Mgarr, including the Azure window to the far west of the island. Mgarr itself has a few really nice restaurants, with good quality food, attended by locals. Other towns of interest are Xlendi and Marsalforn, which do great local seafood freshly caught and cooked to order!
When to go
We went at the beginning of May, and temperatures were from about 15 at night to 25 on hot days. However be warned the sun is strong, we found this out on Ramla bay as the wind masked it! It can be windy between April/May, so it may be worth going towards the end of May instead or early June, however I would avoid August when its sweltering and humid. The sea in May is about 17 degrees, which is cool, it warms up to about 25 in August/September.

“Wonderful”

I can not wait to return to Gozo. I was there for only one night but the staff and hotel were all wonderful. Just beware of the taxis at the ferry offering to take you to the hotel for 10 euros! The hotel is literaly at the top of the hill. I was totally scammed! But live and learn. Stay here it is worth it!!

“Will definately go back”

Stayed at the Grand Hotel for two nights when staying in Malta for a week. Location was great and you could see the hotel from the ferry as it came in. Ten minutes walk up the hill straight to it. Superior sea view room was very comfortable and of a high standard, one of the best we have stayed in and I would rate it five star rather than four. Sea view from balcony was wonderful! Pool area had comfortable beds and no problem at all getting one. Hotel provides free mini-bus to beaches and to Victoria. Local buses very cheap and easy to get about. We stayed on half-board, the food was okay, but next time I would just have breakfast and eat out, or dine in the Hotel's Oriental Restaurant. Didn't have room service food, but this was very reasonably priced and an option for our next visit. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Only negative comment is that the gym equipment didn't work very well and the air-conditioning in there didn't work either.

Area recommendations
Victoria was good for shopping for unusual gifts. A large milky coffee and a "toastie" cost less than a euro in a local cafe near the bus station ... really!!!
