“Pool area”
We went to enjoy the pleasure of the sun in the lovely pool. This hotel has a big swimming pool with very few sunbeds and umbrellas. You won't find a sunbed near the pool early in the morning just after breakfast. It was disappointing for us to sunbath on the edge of the pool.
“Pick the Fortina Spa instead”
Our room and bath were tiny. The mattress was sagging and the toilet hard to flush. Breakfast was low quality. After two nights we upgraded to the Spa Fortina, which is adjacent to the Fortina and a superb hotel where we got a big and comfortable room with a great bath and delicious breakfast.
“Would stay here again - convenient location”
15 mins from the airport, we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel - much more than we expected on all levels. Numerous pools and restaurants - the included breakfast was plentiful with a good variety of food. Not knowing Malta at all we chose Sliema as it seemed quieter than the Grand Harbour. The hotel has fabulous views of Valetta across the water. We had a garden view room with balcony overlooking a very beautiful garden and pools. Saturday evening there was mellow music playing in the pool bar - a nice way to end our day. The hotel is situated on a wide harbourside walk called 'The Strand' by locals. Open air cafes and restaurants, small stores and small versions of favourite English stores - M & S, BHS, Dorothy Perkins, a welcome sight for this ex-pat!. The following afternoon we were catching the fast cat ferry to Sicily - 1 1/2 hour journey. It again was 15 mins by taxi from the hotel to the terminal in the Grand Harbour. Can't wait to go back - this visit was way too short..
“Adequate for our purposes”
I thought the Fortina Hotel itself a little light on comfort and service for a 4* hotel, when comparing it with other 4* in Europe and America. However, this was offset, to a large extent, by being able to use the facilities of the 5* sister spa hotel next door. The different pool areas, and the spa offered a variety of choice, and the implanted restaurants offering a range of cuisine were excellent. In most cases the staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the holiday.
“Good point to stay in Malta for relaxing week-end”
The 4 star Hotel is quite old and outdated. Most of the visitors are very old people having their own fun. Be ready to become a target for stupid joke if you are young. Good in hotel: - Good location. - Good food in restaurants (except main one) - Friendly staff - Nice pool area - Good choice of drinks in the bars Bad side: - Some staff in main restaurant was rude - Smell in the rooms - On departure date we were woken up at 8 AM and were asked question when we plan to leave. Another person knocked again after 30 minutes. - There was only 1 tiny bottle of shampoo for 2 people and no shower gel. But all in I can recommend this hotel.
“Billed as a 4 star but not Impressed.”
Tired rooms that were out dated and small. Dirty bed spread covers. Should progress up to a quilt where the cover can be washed and changed as each guest leaves. Some refurbishnment taking place but overall tired and dated. Staff were friedndly. There was a High proportion of Thomas Cook "all inclusive" which seemd to bring good and bad from all walks if life. A high proportion of people reserving sun beds with towels for the whole day. I have to say the culprits were British. Hotel should remove towels if sun beds occupied for less than 1 hour. This would sort the ignorant guests out.
“A poor 4*”
Rooms good, view from pool very good. The rest is down hill.4* it is not.Pool overtaken by the local diving school, food by others reported as poor.Staff only seemed to care about the 5* next door.No mention of the construction work going on.Silema is pleasent but stay somewere else.
“A good choice”
Great views of Valetta, very convenient for buses or ferry. We'd use this hotel again.
“Disappointed with hotel - reluctant to make a committment to return to it”
The Fortina is very much all 'top show' . Public rooms and grounds are very nice but the bedrooms are smelly, dingy, and in need of a refurb. The furniture is tatty. Bedding clean, towels clean and changed often but thin and rough a bit like having a full body exfoliation every time you shower. First night - wardrobe door not attached - could not hang anything up, timber door in front of fridge rotten at bottom and had a hole in it about 75 mm dia, sink blocked, and contents of fridge had not been stocked. Some reluctance by reception to change room but eventually agreed to arrange exchange. New room was ok but still tired and dull. Inspite of initial disappointment we had a great hol and the food (Buffet breakfast in our case) was great. The hotel restaurants were hugely expensive even with 25% reduction for guests they were, in my opinion, not good value. Much more fun visiting the many reasonably priced eating places all within easy walking distance.
“The Fortina Hotel is OK but not really 4 stars”
The Fortina Hotel has an excellent location with a good view of Valletta. If you want to spend time on your balcony you should go for a room with a sea view - the back rooms look north into an enclosed garden. The staff were helpful. The room was large and well furnished, but let down by little things - I banged my head twice on the shelf over the suitcase stand. The reading lights by the bed are no use. The TV was temperamental with very few English language channels. The lifts are slow. We were given two free tickets for a round the harbour cruise (which we enjoyed) but then were almost sucked into an hour long presentation - presumably about time-share. So, unless you're into timeshare, take the tickets and run.
