“Pleasantly surprised by Lola”
I didn't spend much time selecting a hotel for my two-night stay in Malaga, and I lucked out by choosing Room Mate Lola. I picked it for its location: it's very close to the train station (which is an easy ride to the airport) and is only a few blocks from the old part of the city. The hotel itself was relaxed, clean, and comfortable. The first thing I liked was that the reception staff sit behind desks instead of more formal checkin counters. They also dress casually. They were fun yet professional. My room was great. There was lots of space, and everything was spotless, particularly the bathroom. The only negative thing was that my room faced the side of an apartment building, so I kept the curtains drawn the entire stay. My favorite part of the hotel is the "chill room" on the first floor. It houses a couple of comfortable sofas and is a great quiet place to read or catch up on email. Note that there is free (and fast) wifi on the first floor but not in the guest rooms.
“Cigarette smelling, vertiginous underground car park, full of pensioners”
We have stayed at the Oscar Mate in Madrid and quite like the chain. So thought about giving Lola a try for an overnight in Malaga. All in all - OK - BUT without the Madrid super trendies everything falls somewhat flat. The hotel is quite trendily decorated and there were no lighting problems in the corridors as some reviews mention. The underground car park is scarily steep though - but handy as the surrounding streets are packed with cars. The ramps down to the car park are all 45 degrees with tight turns - hard enough on the way down but 10x worse on the way up. The room was quirky in a nice way but reeked of the last guests cigarette smoke. And the Room Mate soap smells of engine oil. Breakfast was forgettable. Unlike in Madrid we did not feel the uncoolest in the room as everyone else was a pensioner. The breakfast fare was the usual. The coffee machine made horrible coffee. For some reason there was a 'special' of DIY toasted ham and cheese sandwiches - possibly last night's ham and cheese sandwiches put out to toast. Very odd as the mainstay of the breakfast buffet was bread, ham and cheese. All in all fine but not great, maybe Malaga isnt quite ready for Room Mate???
“Excellent location”
Overall really good just need to watch attention to detail.
“Impressed!”
This was an ideally situated city centre hotel. Hotel was clean, bright and served a very impressive continental breakfast for a nominal charge. My only complaint was that for a 4 star hotel there was not any English speaking news channels on television.
“Enjoyable stay and excellent value for money!”
The hotel is situated in the red light district, but whatever happens, happens behind closed doors. We (2 women) felt quite safe walking back after dinner. There are many bars tapas nearby and it is less than 5 minutes walk to the city centre where there are some excellent restaurants and shops. The room was spotless and the staff were very helpful and obliging.
“Great hotel”
Very well designed, modern hotel in a very accessible position between the sea and the Alameda. We chose the hotel because it offered car parking and we've stayed in the Room Mate in Salamanca and that was excellent. Free internet was a bonus only it was having problems so on our first day we went to an internet booth in the next road to the hotel so not too inconvenient. It worked fine later on. Garage is very tight and very steep so our large car proved a problem. Love the green apples offered in reception. Breakfast was good with great coffee.Rooms are spacious and modern and clean. One downside was that the tv was very hard to figure out as there were two remotes and we had to be manually switched over by reception to be able to receive CNN, the only news channel available in English. We also couldn't alter the heating controls. This could just be us being pernickity. All in all a great hotel.
“A nice surprise”
A surprising and overall well maintained hotel, especially for the price. Most shopping, attractions, shipping port, train and bus station are within a 10 - 15 minute walking distance.
“Reliable chain in Malaga”
Consider location if you want to be near the beach. Although this hotel is very close to the Mediterranean Sea, the closest point is a commercial port. It is, however, close to the city centre - good for business and for seeing the sights.
“Nice hotel, poor neighborhood”
No complaints at all with the hotel. Room was clean and comfortable. Within walking distance to downtown shopping and restaurants. Neighborhood is a little seedy, with prostitutes patrolling the streets at night.
“Excellent offering of style, service, location and price”
Friendly and helfpful staff greeted us at check-in. My only complaint was that they did not explain the charging structure for hotel parking and the bill at the end was an uncomfortable surprise. The bedroom was a delight and was effectively air-conditioned which was essential in mid-August.. The rest of the hotel is not air-conditioned which made the breakfast restaurant a bit uncomfortable later in the morning for un-aclimatised Brits! The breakfasts buffet was good and had a reasonable range of choice although it all looked a bit familiar after a week. The staff were always very helpful with directions and helping us find specific venues and types of restaurants. The location of the hotel is convenient for the main shopping and commercial areas while not being in the centre of things. During feria week, this was a distinct advantage as one could get away from the partying when you'd had enough. All in all a very attractive mix of location, style, friendliness, quality and very reasonable pricing.
