“Great Location, Friendly Staff, Very Basic Room. Would Stay Again.”

I'll admit, as a straight male I was slightly put off by the title "Gay Hostal Puerta del Sol" but I got over it and I'm glad I did. The staff were nice and very helpful. The hotel is right near the center of the Plaza/City and in conveniently located next to numerous clubs/bar restaurants and tourist attractions. It is also about 100 ft from the metro station, bus stop and taxi area. There is also a direct Airport shuttle about a 5-10 minute walk away and it only costs 2 euro each way! The Hostal is located on the 4th floor of the building, but there is an elevator so it's not an issue and probably makes it a bit quieter than the ground floor establishments are. The building entrance locks at night (you are provided a key) and the Hostal itself is almost always locked and you must be "buzzed" in, so security is not an issue. The rooms are not attractive in any sense and the beds are nothing special, but in my opinion hotel rooms are for sleeping only and you should spend as much time as possible out and about anyway. There is a sink and a tiny TV (I just watched TV/movies on my laptop, which has a larger screen...) as well as a place to hang your clothes. The internet was slow at times, but can be accessed from your room. Bathrooms are shared but in the 7 nights I stayed there I never had a problem waiting for anyone as there are multiple bathrooms. This is my first hostal as I prefer hotels, but if you're going to stay in a hostal it might as well be this one.

Area recommendations
I'd stay in this area if I were you. There is plenty to do in the area and you can easily travel throughout the rest of Madrid from here.
When to go
Go later or ealier in the year. I went mid November and the weather was still great (a bit hot during the days) but there were far less tourists and the hotels are cheaper. There is something going on every night, but the weekend will always have the most going on.
Getting there
Do not rent a car! I almost did and it would have been a waste. Driving is crazy (much like in Paris) and the public transportation system is great. You can walk just about everywhere or hop on a bus/metro. There is a bus right out front of the Airport that will bring you to central Madrid, just ask the bus driver or someone on at which stop you should get off at. I believe it is the second stop in Madrid, at a huge roundabout.
Getting around
I bought the MADRide tour bus ticket (20 euro for 1 day or 24 euro for 2 days). It is a double decker tour bus and if the weather is nice they roll back the roof and the top deck is wide open. There are 2 paths, historic and modern Madrid, and then a extended path. It comes with headphones which you plug in at your seat and can choose from 14 languages. I sat through each route once and listened to all the history and then got on/off at the spots which I found to be interesting. You can hop on and off all day. Or just walk everywhere. The madrid train station also connects the most destinations out of any train station in Europe, so I would suggest taking a day trip (or maybe a few days) to other locations such as Valencia. you can also find cheap flights to Portugal.
Nightlife
Many clubs are free for women. Entrance fees normally include 1-2 drinks and range from 5-15 euro. There are always people handing out fliers/cards with discounts, so don't just pass them by! Serrano 41 (address and club name) Kapital (largest club in Madrid, 7 floors) Joy Eslave (club 2 minute walk from the hostal) Numerous Irish pubs and other bars right in the area Comma (club right by the hotel, not amazing but it's free to get in)

“It's all about the location and price!”

If you are looking to be in literally the center of it all and you are on a budget, then look no further. Hotel is literally at zero kilometer and in the heart of Puerta del Sol. It doesn't get any more convenient than this. Price is very decent too. Pros: Location and price. Great for the party animal or single person who wants to be where all of the action is. Metro station literally steps away. Cons: Very busy and noisy area. Bed is like a prison cell bed. Hard and lumpy and the pillow flat as a pancake. Staff speak limited English. I found this to be a major problem throughout Madrid. if you brush up on your Spanish, you may be alright. But for someone who doesnt speak any it can be difficult. I found this to be odd considering how touristy the area is. I wouldn't say this is per say a "gay" hostel. There were all sorts here and all age groups. That can either be a positive or negative for some.

Area recommendations
Puerta del Sol is the area to be in and the heart of the action. Also walking distance to all the touristy things to see.
Getting around
Take the Metro. It's quick, easy and cheap. Again, be cautious of your belongings. Pick pockets operate here in droves and are very sly.
Must see
The royal palace.
Other
Watch out for pick pockets. They are everywhere and very good at their game.

“Will never go anywhere else!!!!”

This is my second time staying in this hotel and i was not dissappointed one bit! The hotel staff are friendly as usual, they were accomodating to our every need. The location is superb, we didnt need the metro for anything because all the main tourist attractions are withing walking distance! If your not big on breakfast then this hostel is perfect because the morning selecetion is weak but the staff freindliness, hostel location, room comort more than makes up for this.

Area recommendations
Puerta Del Sol is the heart of madrid. You are surround with endless sights to see. Nearby attractions include the Poyal Palaces and the Almudena cathedral. both these buildings are breathatking and seeped with history so if you dont want a brainless holiday, it is well worth your while to go for a tour. just pesent your passport and if you are a member of the EU, entry is free! beware outside the palaces, there are always poeple trying to make money from nothing so dont be easily persuaded! There are lots of 'statue' acts in which poeple will dress up as certain charachers.. They will lure and encourage you to pose and take pictures with them and then charge you a few euro. the best way is just to take pictures from afar. Further on from the palaces near plaza d'espania, there is a fantastic Flamenco Club called Las Tablas. For a true spanish experience you must visit this place and witness the flamenco dancers in all their passion and beauty. It is the perfect place for couples because it is a very romantic setting. you will have an opporutnity at the end to mingle with the performers and have your pictures taken.
Getting there
The last time I went to Madird i paid 50 Euros to get from the airport to the hostel. In fact it is only a 45min journey on the metro and costing only 2.50 Euros, it is well worth effort! Sol (red liine) is the metro stop which leads you right to the hostel.
Getting around
Everything is suprising close by, so i would recommend spending the first few hours of the holiday just getting used to your surrounding and having a quick look at what your surroundings have to offer. the best way to get the most out of your holiday is to plan in advance. if you have a guide book with a map, you know what attractions are closest and what attractions you will need alternative transport to get to. he bull fightng only happens on a sunday but it is well worth watching. To get there we needed to take the metro to Ventas which takes you right outside the fighting stadium. i would be very reluctant to take taxis because if you are unfamiliar to the area, you may be taken advantage of as the drivers may take a longer journey to get somewhere that is in fact nearby.
What to pack
make sure you take an adaptor!!!! without one it is very difficult to function! Madird is very hot so try to stick to loose breatheable fabrics. As metioned previously, the breakfast selecti is weak, so i packed some biscuits and pot noodles to keep me going until i found somewhere nice to eat.
Must see
you must experience Madrid in all its glory! The bull fighting that takes place on sundays at Toros is an integral part of Madrid culture. whether it is barbaric or beautiful it is something you must experience at least once! i would highly recommend taking the tour before the actual fight so that you have more of an understanding about this highly contraversial sport. Do see Palacio Royal and take advantage of the free tour (to EU members on presentation of your passport) the views are beautiful and can only be enjoyed inside the palace walls Plaza Mayor is an ideal place to meet new poeple and the cafes are wonderful. this place really comes to life at nights.

“Excellent location”

It was on excellent location.two things which bothered us were cleanliness of the room and the wifi usage. Towels and bedsheets were stained, wifi was not working in the room. The tv also was not working.however they had a common tv in the lobby.

“Just not worth staying at”

Great location-though,if your room is above the square you will hear the Indignados applauding and jeering well into the early hours.I asked for a move and was put into another room,it had no sink and was very basic. The staff are mostly polite but not helpful.I had to ask for the TV to be tuned in-twice and the third time I could not get it to function I just gave up.I asked why there was no English language Channel-the member of staff said they were not prepared to pay for! Many of the guests appeared to be native English speakers. This member of staff smoked openly at the desk, even while I spoke to him.The bathrooms and showers are shared. The whole place needs better stuff-the beds are old and uncomfortable. No fruit at breakfast and no fresh milk. The same food each day-no variety.Just not worth the slight savings over more conventional places.I was there on one other occasion and gave it another chance-not again.Too basic and indifferent to the clientele. The TV in the lounge boomed until around 1am-suiting staff rather than any of the guests. If cheapness is your sole criterion this is the place for you.

“The perfect little abode in the heart of Madrid”

This little hostel has all the qualities that I look for when I travel: located in the heart of the city (I could walk everywhere from it), clean, spartan but adequate room, attentive staff, and incredibly cheap for the neighborhood. It is also super easy to reach it from the airport, using the subway. The breakfast included in the price of the room was not very good, so I decided to go out the following days. For less than 3 euros, you can easily find a typical restaurant where locals stop by and have a delicious coffee, a big omelette and some bread at the counter, so it was no biggie for me. All in all, a great little address in Madrid. You get what you pay for, with a supplement of soul. If you are a light sleeper like I am, just bring your earplugs and you'll be all set. My room was facing a courtyard, so it was not that noisy anyway. I'll definitely stay there again next time I'm in Madrid. A tip: the name on their street sign only says 'Hostal Puerta del Sol.'
