Bon hôtel

Posted 30-Apr-2015
Pros: Vielle demeure madérane. Chambre vaste et très propre. Proche du centre (15 mn à pied). Accueil très aimable. Petit-déjeuner très copieux. Parking.

Comfortable and homely hotel

Posted 25-Apr-2015
Pros: The friendly and comfortable atmosphere.
Cons: The bathroom needed a little attention.
Location: It is conveniently situated so that we could walk into town or along towards the Lido with plenty of restaurants nearby.
I stayed here with my daughter for four nights - it provided us with a comfortable base for our first visit to Madeira. It was conveniently situated although the main road might bother some people. It had a pleasant ambience and the staff were always willing to help answer any enquiries. We stayed in a room with a veranda which enabled us to enjoy both the early morning sun and the pleasant evening ambience. The hotel had a shabby chic atmosphere although the bathroom did need a little attention. There always seemed to be plenty of hot water available and I cannot fault the cleanliness of the room. I would certainly consider staying here again in the future.

Quiet but central

Posted 14-Apr-2015
Pros: A lovely old Madeiran country house (Quinta) with just over 30 rooms and very attractive gardens overlooking Funchal - quiet yet still very accessible
Cons: Could hardly be much better - all the facilities we needed, with an excellent welcome and service from the staff
Location: On the western side of Funchal, within 20 minutes easy walk of the centre and the harbour - on a bus route so easy to get around the island
A very relaxing and comfortable way to enjoy the unique climate and vegetation of this stunning island

Pros: Die Lage mit Meeres-und Stadtblick. Schöne Frühstücksräume im Wintergarten.
Cons: Sichtschutz zwischen den Balkonen komplett fehlend! Wäre mit Bepflanzung sehr einfach zu lösen! Keine Haltehaken im Bad!
Location: Fußnähe zur Innenstadt! Gute Busanbindung!
Als Paar fünf Nächte rein zur Stadtbesichtigung! Sehr schönes altes Gebäude in allerdings etwas lauter Umgebung. Trotzdem eine Oase im Vergleich zu den folgenden Hotels im Hotelviertel!

Lovely, traditional, friendly hotel

Posted 31-Mar-2015
If you are looking for a hotel that is different from the large, soulless blocks, then this is the one for you. 36 rooms in a delightful garden setting, close to shops and local restaurants. The staff are very friendly and always on hand to offer help and advice on the area. The rooms are furnished in traditional Madeira style and it is easy to relax in them. We enjoyed our breakfasts on the terrace and our drink in the small hotel bar before bed.

Small, friendly, well positioned comfortable hotel

Posted 25-Feb-2015
Pros: Its small and friendly, like a County house. It does all the basics well and is well positioned. Views from the upper floors are great.
Cons: Being picky, beds are a bit firm and some of the corridor carpets are a little threadbare.
Location: Great location near Reids (good for tea unless on a budget). Quinta Magnolia is a haven of peace and calm. Buses galore to the Old Town for atmosphere
We'd been here before so knew what to expect and were not disappointed. Warmly welcomed and shown to our room hours before official 'Check-in', we were next door to last years room in the newer part of the hotel with a balcony, which we had requested and paid for. Not a huge room - the ones in the older part of the building are quite a bit larger but without a balcony. One of our joys is to sit outside for a while and soak up Funchal, the surrounding mountains and the sea. The hotel has plenty of sitiingout facilities but they don't have the views you get on the third (top) floor. Rooms are always clean and well serviced - wish the beds were a little softer, but thats a personal choice - they are by no means uncomfortable. Shower over the bath functions well and there is always hot water! Breakfasts (buffet) are fine, unless you are expecting the full english - plenty to choose from and all fresh. Breakfast outside in February is one reason to go to Madeira. Staff are all great - friendly and helpful. They do other meals but we prefer to roam Funchal for the atmosphere and street life so we've never eaten in the hotel in the evening. Pool and sunbeds available in the attractive gardens and in use in February. The Perestrello suits us. We prefer small hotels and their relative quietness. It's well placed for buses into Funchal, although its only a 15 minute walk, and with a choice of resteraunts within 5-10 minutes stroll. Can't imagine staying elsewhere in Madeira.

Sehr schönes Hotel, gut gelegen.

Posted 22-Jan-2015

Charming but a little tired

Posted 14-Jun-2014
Pros: As above.
Cons: As above.
Location: Funchal is worth a visit in the quieter periods of the year.
My wife and I booked this hotel following a recommendation from a friend. It is a small hotel (approx. 35 rooms) about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal located in an elevated position above a busy dual carriageway and junction. Its size and a distinct advantage is that it does not cater for large groups of visitors whichOn arrival we were shown to our room at the front of the hotel with a balcony with a decent view including the road below. I was immediately struck by the noise of constant passing traffic. I drew this to the attention of the manager as a result of which we were offered and accepted a room at the rear of the older part of the hotel but up two flights of stairs (no lift in the hotel) with no view. On the plus side, it was larger and compared to the front of the building, quiet. The interior of the hotel has the quiet charm of a beloved old aunt but who is a little tired; displaying patches of worn corridor carpets and the sunken cushions of the settees at the reception entrance. On a more positive note, the staff were invariably helpful and courteous. The hotel offers a so called 'snack' menu during the day beyond the self serve breakfast; one evening meal we tried there was almost inedible, fortunately we found an excellent Italian restaurant nearby but there is a wide choice of other good restaurants close by. Madeira's mass market tourism catered for in the huge shiny hotels nearby have overtaken and swallowed up this beloved old aunt. A pity!
