Lovely old Madeira hotel

Posted 17-Jun-2014
Pros: Friendliness,relaxed atmosphere,position & good breakfast.
Cons: Pillows!
Location: Good, with everything accessible from walks to trips by bus or car.
Just a reasonable downhill walk into Funchal centre, this comfortable old house style hotel has spotless swimming pool with sun beds to laze in on the days not spent out & about.getting around is easy, bus stops all a hop away, parking in the grounds, really delightful views,& if traffic noise gets you down ask for quiet bedrooms at the rear.

Charming but a little tired

Posted 14-Jun-2014
Pros: As above.
Cons: As above.
Location: Funchal is worth a visit in the quieter periods of the year.
My wife and I booked this hotel following a recommendation from a friend. It is a small hotel (approx. 35 rooms) about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal located in an elevated position above a busy dual carriageway and junction. Its size and a distinct advantage is that it does not cater for large groups of visitors whichOn arrival we were shown to our room at the front of the hotel with a balcony with a decent view including the road below. I was immediately struck by the noise of constant passing traffic. I drew this to the attention of the manager as a result of which we were offered and accepted a room at the rear of the older part of the hotel but up two flights of stairs (no lift in the hotel) with no view. On the plus side, it was larger and compared to the front of the building, quiet. The interior of the hotel has the quiet charm of a beloved old aunt but who is a little tired; displaying patches of worn corridor carpets and the sunken cushions of the settees at the reception entrance. On a more positive note, the staff were invariably helpful and courteous. The hotel offers a so called 'snack' menu during the day beyond the self serve breakfast; one evening meal we tried there was almost inedible, fortunately we found an excellent Italian restaurant nearby but there is a wide choice of other good restaurants close by. Madeira's mass market tourism catered for in the huge shiny hotels nearby have overtaken and swallowed up this beloved old aunt. A pity!

Decent place to stay

Posted 08-Jun-2014
Pros: Staff/location.
Cons: Pillows
Location: Meat and wines good for a meal, pub number two for drinks and snacks
My first visit and nice not to be in a big chain hotel. Much of what others have said is correct it is a "character" property but slightly frayed in places but nothing that would put me off returning. If you like soft mattresses forget it these are firm and for me that's how i like it but it won't suit everyone and yep pillows need a good upgrade. Bathroom functional and hot water aplenty so no bad points for me. Breakfast is a little below par and thats being fair, the weakest aspect for me. Nice situation/pool/little garden and terrace but the excellent staff give this place a major thumbs up from me. " bus stops outside including one for the hop on/off sightseeing busses. All in all I liked it.

Lovely room in old house, very comfy beds

Posted 11-Mar-2014 on Hotels.com
Overall excellent although rooms in the large extension, with balconies, may not be as nice as our lovely room in the old house without a balcony. Location on the fringe of funchal just before hotel belt and just about within walking distance to the centre for reasonably fit. Plenty of buses if not.

Quiet, great staff, spotlessly clean.

Posted 27-Jan-2014
Pros: Staff, breakfast, cleanliness, peace and quiet, small number of rooms (only 36). Closer to town than many. Nearby bus stop.
Cons: Double bed preferred.
Location: Easy to catch a bus into town and very cheap 1.45euro. Walking takes 15-20 min. and its uphill on the way back! Good restaurants nearby.
I found Perestrello a quiet peaceful hotel. The decor is a bit like an old Auntie's house. Breakfast was a good continental affair. Everything is spotlessly clean. Staff are polite, helpful and friendly and are smartly dressed in their uniforms. The bathroom was a bit tired but shower was powerful and hot so not a big issue. Clean towels everyday. Two single beds were made up as a huge double. Heated swimming pool outside and again the cleaning staff worked hard everyday cleaning the sunbeds etc. I would recommend if you like peace and quiet and don't care about glitz.

Heritage hotel

Posted 22-Oct-2013
Pros: It's small size, quiet and peaceful environment. It was close enough to the centre for easy access but not too near.
Cons: The size of the hotel meant the selection of hot food at breakfast was limited but there was a good selection of fruit and cold savoury items.
Location: The hotel was a gentle 15 minute stroll down hill to the centre or a bus ride back up.
A very pleasant small hotel with character. Having travelled past the large number of enormous hotel complexes in the "Hotel area", we were delighted we chose Quinta Perestrello. We had a ground floor room which was quiet and secluded and we were able to sit outside in or out of the sun. The hotel was a gentle 15 minute stroll down hill to the centre or a bus ride back up. There are several restaurants close by. The hotel restaurant did breakfast and light lunches but not dinners although dinner was available in one of the other three hotels in the "Charming Hotels" group with free transport to these others.

A good experience

Pros: Pool. Breakfast
Cons: Intermittent wifi access
Very convenient location - for town, restaurants, car hire, etc. Small-ish but not too small to give good service. Excellent breakfast.

good place for seeing Funchal

Posted 30-Mar-2013
Small hotel with helpful, friendly staff; good location about 15mins walk from the centre of Funchal; it would have been even better with tea and coffee facilities in the room. We would stay there again

A handy hotel for sightseeing

Posted 05-Dec-2012
I enjoyed my week at the above hotel. A few gripes...the safe was of no use as I think the key part had been removed. The fruit juice in the mornings was watered down which altered the taste considerably. I was on the third floor and as I am in my 70's i found the stairs a bit of a pain. There are no lifts and there were no men on the staff when I arrived or left to help with my case. As it was 20 kilos, I thought that was too heavy for female staff members to be expected to lift.

Although the decor a little tired in places, it was a delight. The staff were very helpful and the hotel was in a good position.
