“small and friendly”

Situated in an area of big, ugly concrete hotels, the Quinta Perestrello had charm, comfortable beds, good breakfast and staff that remembered your name and were only too pleased to help. So pleased with our choice. Good selection of restaurants within a few minutes walk of hotel or in centre of Funchal which was a 15 minute walk away. If balcony is important to you, make sure you pay the extra for a terrace room or one in the new wing.

Area recommendations
The hotel zone in Funchal is not attractive. The old town is worth a look for interesting architecture and restaurants with more character.
Getting around
If you want to do the Levada walks, I would recommend going on a guided walk. Buses are infrequent and taxis expensive and the local levada walks are not the most attractive. Buses were not a good option from/to the airport and we ended up paying for taxis.

“location”

A small, comfortable hotel in a very convenient location. Being close to the city but not right in it was ideal. Similarly not being surrounded by other big hotels and tourist complexes was nice. Vey friendly staff and excellent breakfast. The creaking bed needs some attention! We would be very happy to go back to this hotel.

Area recommendations
The city is small and it is easy to walk all round the centre. A bus ticket (3/5/7 days) is worth having and the bus route to the Monte gardens is an experience! Take the funicular up and the bus down.

“Quirkly little old hotel admidst concrete modern blocks”

Nice quirky little hotel, very quiet and relaxed ambiance, right by a main road but interesting old building and pleasant gardens. Excellent breakfasts with cooked food and a huge selection of breads and all the usual continental offerings. Service a touch slow at times, but friendly. Rooms were very well serviced. We booked a superior terrace room onto the garden and pool and I expected a touch more luxury, beds and very firm and the room has a not unpleasant old fashioned look but maybe needed a refurb soon! The pool and terrace area could do with some paint and updating.

Area recommendations
Our hotel was near Reids Palace and the Savoy which is as far as you want to be from town without using taxis (which are very reasonable and regulated) or buses. I would choose something nearer to town in future and the Lido area is only okay if you like mega structure 5 star hotels and facilities, we prefer character, a quiet hotel and convenience.
When to go
Went to Madeira in February for the first time, and encountered natural disaster and flash flooding! Thankfully we were okay and many were not, but I would avoid this month in the future - previous visits have been in April which have been glorious, but worth checking out the flower festival dates
Getting around
We hired a car which seemed to me to a must, though you can cover most of the sights in 3 days
Must see
Curral das Frieras and Cabo Girau are the big sights, but we thought the north coast and the big peaks were enchanting and want to go back to walk them in better weather! Funchal market is a visual treat, and don't missed the cable car ride to Monte, which gives an incredible view of the city.
Shopping
If you love baskets, flowers, textiles, embroidery, cake and wine you are in paradise! Also beautiful portuguese leather goods are to be had. The main basket warehouse is in Camacha and some of the stuff is a bit twee but plenty of good stuff too. Bordal do a wonderful job of marketing the exquisite embroidery which is pricey and a touch outdated, but to be marveled at. We did the Blandy's wine tour where we learned lots about the fascinating process of Madeira wine making and tasted and bought a couple of bottles.
Dining
'Restaurants' were a bit of a let down - we preferred the cafes in town especially the espidatas in Cafe de Sel and the cakes and dinner in the Grand Cafe Golden Gate, right in the centre of Funchal and a great place to watch the world go by. The street food is good and the patisserie and the cakes excellent and better than the formal restaurants!

“Very friendly”

Very friendly hotel, good food, pretty location and, despite being beside main road, no problem with traffic noise. Car park entrance a little bit of a challenge!

Traveller's tip
Even if you are not going serious walking, take shoes with decent soles - most of the paths and some of the pavements are surfaced in small cobbles!

“An excellent alternative to the high rise hotels.”

This hotel is housed in an old mansion with only 3 floors, but no lifts. The rooms are very large, air conditioned, and spotlessly cleaned each day. The beds are large and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was excellent with a wide range of hot and cold food available. Our only disappointment was the dinner we had on our first evening, it was very ordinary and, we felt, over priced. There are however many excellent restaurants in Funchal town, which can be walked into easily or accessed by bus not far from the hotel.

Traveller's tip
My wife and I can thoroughly recommend a restaurant called 'Olives' in Rua da Queimada de Cima in the town centre, especially if you have any vegetarians in your party. The three brothers who run this establishment speak excellent English and ensure your meal is pleasant and enjoyable.

“thoroughly enjoyed our stay”

Situated as it is, close to the centre of funchal, only a five minute walk, we found it an ideal quiet hotel to stay at, with the staff, extremely courteous and helpful. We ate in three times during our stay and found the quality of the food excellent though at present, with the pound/euro exchange rate appalling it was quite costly and not for those on a tight budget (avge 50 pounds for two). Plenty of other places nearby including an italian only two minutes away. To be honest the hotel could do with a little money spent on small things like sunbeds which were a little worn but otherwise the hotel was excellent.

Traveller's tip
This island is not really a place for children providing no facilities except in some hotels but otherwise has plenty to do for couples.

“Looking forward to our next visit”

We found the hotel to be very comfortable, with friendly and helpful staff. Room & ensuite were spacious and had pleasant terrace through oatiio doors. It's well situated, being on the edge of the hotel sector that is nearest the town centre, so an easy walk into town (harder work on the way back 'cos its uphill). There are good bus services outside the hotel too. Only slight criticism was the dining room had slightly too many tables, so a little too close to others for an intimate dinner, though this probably wouldn't be a problem during the summer months, as the ouside tables would doubtless be in use.

Traveller's tip
We were there on a walking holiday and wanted to use buses as much as possible. We found it hard to get good information from the bus offices for the services outside Funchal, but the timetables are on internet, so it's worth planning before you go. Also, don't trust taxi drivers to take you to the right starting place for a given Lavada walk - they claim to have good local knoweldge but often don't, so keep a close eye on the map / instructions in your chosen book!

“Quiet Madeira charm”

Perfect location, walking distance to marina and town. Our room opened on to the small garden with heated pool. Quiet atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing break. More suited to couples than families with children. Lovely buffet breakfast. Staff very helpful in booking taxis and trips; instant polite and friendly service. Best hotel I've been in for a long time.

Traveller's tip
Plan what you want to see but be flexible; it can be wet and windy in February. Use the hotel to phone tour operators. Think twice about car hire unless you have a very good sense of 3 D direction; there are bridges and tunnels everywhere! Buses and coach tours are excellent, good value and easy to use. Guided walks are a good option- you can easily get lost doing it yourself.

“The perfectly located small hotel”

Quinta Perestrello is small, friendly, clean and perfectly located, situated in a fashionable area of Funchal (e.g. the Godiva chocolate shop is in the same block) between the city centre and the Lido. Some reviews refer to traffic noise but this was not a problem for me as the garden vegetation and double-glazing minimised it and the plus side of traffic was the frequent buses into town. It's not a hotel for those who expect their entertainment on site or lots of public rooms - it's for those who want to be out and about, exploring Funchal and the island. But, if you want to laze by the pool, take tea on the terrace or a drink in the bar, that's all available, too. The breakfast buffet was excellent - a great start to a day's exploration. I dined in the hotel every night but there were several restaurants nearby and many guests simply took a bus into town. I'm looking forward to my next trip.

Traveller's tip
Get a Bus Pass! Take a bus into Funchal City Centre on your first morning and take your bus ticket to the kiosk where, for a very few euros, it will be turned into a Bus Pass for 1,3,5 or 7 days. Even if you don't think you'll use it that much, once you discover how fantastic Madeira's buses are, you'll be hopping on and off, timetable and map in your pocket, exploring that truly lovely and fascinating island. It is so much fun!
