Madeira break

Posted 09-Sep-2014
Pros: Good service and overall quality Definitely for the more mature guests though
Location: Half an hour to walk into town but buses available very close to hotel Also hotel shuttle runs 7 times during daytime to town centre
Lovely hotel for a 4 star Food, facilities and staff all very good. Only downer was "sea view room" was not really a sea view-view --of next door hotel mainly Hotel restaurants were good but not too cheap Otherwise very good

Gluten free and hotel

Posted 11-Jul-2014
Pros: The pools, the position, the gardens, evening entertainment( ruined by Mr Maron) Breakfast(needs to go back to gluten free friendly)
Cons: Staff in reception, gluten free offer, and no Mr Maron
Second visit was a great disappointment as last time they had the most wonderful gluten free rolls and a wonderful attitude to coeliacs, this has disappeared making a repeat visit very unlikely. Reception did not have enough staff and the overwork obviously made them the most miserable receptionists I have encountered. Mr Maron (query spelling) entertainment in the evenings is turning the hotel into a downmarket holiday camp. If the hotel offers ballroom dancing Mr Maron should not take up the floor with his mindless games.

Beautiful views of the ocean

Posted 09-Jul-2014
Pros: Restarants, entertainment was good.
Cons: Communication on the towels and the free shuttle bus should be made clearer on arrival by the staff.
Location: Plenty of good restarants around the hotel.
A great hotel, facilities very good. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

A really nice Hotel

Posted 28-Jun-2014
Pros: Spacious area's inside and out, free wifi in public areas inside or near to bars
Cons: Aircon could be cooler
Location: Great location 2 - 3 km from Funchal Harbour and old town area. Lots of good quality local restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets
The hotel was very well laid out in expansive gardens with lots of outside space offering shade or sun there were plenty of sun beds several bars all offering different entertainment. Staff friendly maid service excellent this definitely a 4 star plus venue. We have stayed in some 5 star venues that could not match thus venue. My only negative and it really is a small one is that the room aircon could have been cooler. We would stay again

Resort hotel

Posted 22-May-2014
Pros: Breakfast, room, gardens, terrace
Cons: we like it just the way it is
Location: Hotel zone. Shuttle bus to Funchal, but hire a car if you want to see more of the island
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is an EXTREMELY LARGE hotel but our stay was comfortable and relaxing. The gardens and pool areas are delightful - unfortunately the inviting outdoor pool was closed for maintenance work , most of the time during our stay (at the end of March) , but other pools were available close by for guests to use instead. We hired a car for our holiday and were able to park easily for free in and around the hotel grounds ( for people without a car there was an excellent free shuttle bus into Funchal). Our room was a lovely clean, cool place to rest and relax. We hope to return again.

Still one of the best in Funchal

Posted 29-Apr-2014
Pros: Breakfast superb, staff delightful, grounds beautifully maintained.
Cons: Spa pool should be for adults only.
Location: Plenty of reasonable restaurants nearby.
Our third stay in a year. Still excellent. Well looked after.

Great Holiday

Posted 09-Apr-2014
This was my second visit to the Porto Mare and third trip to madeira. The hotel was, as before, superb in every way and the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful island. The room was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The buffet breakfast was vast and of high quality, setting you up perfectly for the day ahead. The pools and grounds were immaculate. There are so many restaurants to choose from and none disappointed, with generous portions. Costs for meals would be on a par with the UK, but some things such as coffee and cakes were a fair bit cheaper, especially so if you left Funchal and headed elsewhere. This brings me to my main tip - in order to apprecite the full beauty of the island you must, if you can and are able, book a car and head off away from Funchal and around the coast or to the north of the island. You really do not either see or experience Madeira fully unless you do so. Driving is easy as there is so little traffic away from Funchal and whilst it is very, very mountainous that should not deter if you are careful. Thoroughly recommended.

Exceeds Expectations!

Posted 29-Mar-2014 on Hotels.com
We went with high expectations because of good reviews and ratings and they were exceeded. Facilities are excellent. Restaurants were very good, with an excellent breakfast buffet. Our room turned out to be a small suite with kitchenette and balcony with tables and chairs for dining. The area is a hotel district with some excellent restaurants and bars within minutes walk. Only small downside is distance to the town centre of about 1.2 miles but the hotel runs a complimentary bus service and there is a full taxi rank outside the hotel with taxis costing about €6.50 into town.

Worth the four stars

Posted 23-Mar-2014
Pros: All staff were friendly and always helpful. Great choice for breakfast and lovely seating area next to the pool.
Cons: We were contacted twice during our stay to ask if we were interested in a 'time share' deal which we could have done without.
Location: Good location overlooking the ocean. Half an hour to walk into Funchal centre, but plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.
Porto Mare is part of a three hotel complex which means you can use the facilities of all three hotels, including restaurants and swimming pools. The restaurants have a good variety in choice of food and the two we tried, Basillico and Alfama, were both very good. Breakfast buffet is great with plenty of choice, including a glass of bubbly! The hotel has a nice outdoor and an indoor pool, both clean and spacious, and lovely gardens to wander through. Good location overlooking the ocean and although a half hour walk into Funchal centre, there are lots of restaurants and shops nearby. If you don't fancy the walk you can use the hotel bus or a couple of local buses which stop right outside the hotel and don't cost too much.
