All staff were excellent. The service is second to none. It is not the first time I stay at the Carlton and definately not the last..

“Good quality hotel”

We enjoyed 4 nights at this hotel in 2 rooms. Both with sea view balconies. The hotel and staff were as expected. Pools and gardens well looked after and attractive.

“Very good place to stay in Funchal. Prime spot with access to the sea and a PADI diving school”

My Mum and i had a very enjoyable holiday. The hotel was great. We had a brilliant room, Good views across the sea, close to the pool ,resturants and reception. Very good as my Mum cannot see very well. She soon felt at home and did not need guidance after a couple of days as she knew that all the things she needed were not far away. It was 15 to 20 minute walk to the centre and up a steep hill to come back. However the hotel offered us a deal for the buses and so did not cost much if we did not want to walk. Taxis charged up to 5 euros each journey but were the most comfortable way to get there. The hotel was clean, and very comfortable. Staff very helpful. A little slow in the resurants and bars and at breakfast. Good breakfast with all that you could ask for. but, no fresh orange juice.silly thing, i know but we hoped it would have been. " The pub" is not somewhere i would recommend to eat. A Five star hotel probably should not be connected to this. But the staff were good. Overall excellent and would take my Mum there again. The Diving school gives you the chance to begin your training and also great dives for the more advanced, brilliant experience and a credit to the hotel. Staff great. Also you get the chance to go snorkling with dolphins on certain days. seriously recommended. Many things to do and seeon Maderia. Not possible in the 8 days we were there. Fabulous.

“Very good, shame about the building works near the hotel”

We were very happy with the room and our fab views until we stepped onto the balcony and found building works to the left of our view. We could hear the diggers and men at work even from the 16th floor and with the doors closed. they work from 8 am to 8 pm and so there is little relief if you want to spend time in your room or on your balcony. We asked to be moved and the hotel did move us to the 3rd floor with pool and sea views. We enjoyed our stay as the hotel is very good indeed but they had some special deals for children during our stay (unbeknown to us) therefore rather too noisy for us. Also a very crowded hotel and breakfasts were just like being at a very busy railway station with people coming and going. Having said that, credit to the hotel that they managed the service pretty well. Beds around the pool a problem as too many people reserving them until notices were given out. Even then due to sheer numbers one had to get down to the pool rather early to get beds. All in all we like Madeira and Pestana hotels, but we quite like a quiet time and this hotel was too busy and noisy for us.

Terrific hotel. Good service. Wonderful breakfasts. Two large salt water pools and access to ocean swimming. Make sure to choose ocean view rooms. Construction on land side spoils view and makes noise. Several reasonably priced restaurants nearby.

“Relaxing with fantastic views”

Thoroughly enjoyed a long weekend at this hotel. The view was fantastic, the facilities excellent and the staff very helpful. Room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was great with plenty of choice. Would be happy to return and would reccommend this hotel.

“One of the best we have stayed in around the world”

The hotel was just what we needed and imagined from the description (on websites) and apart from the noise from the machinery (diggers etc) at the back of the hotel the whole experience was first rate. We decided not to take a bedroom with a sea view, in order to use the extra cost involved towards another holiday in the autumn, but this would have been the "icing on the cake" had we accepted the offer. However, the mountain view (especially at night with the twinkling lights) was most interesting. The breakfasts were superb as were the pools and other facilities. Definitely a hotel to recommend to friends and family.

“Pestana Carlton - a good hotel in ideal location”

Good level of cleanliness and service. Sea view room light and airy and well appointed. Worth the extra not to have a road side room. On the downside drinks etc purchased from the hotel are overpriced but there are plently of bars and restaurants in the immediate area. We were on B & B basis. Breakfasts were of good quality and plenty of choice. There is a good range of restaurants in the vicinity with excellent choice of food and at all budgets.
