“Wonderful Hotel”

Hotel was clean, well decorated and lovely! Room great, everything very clean. Breakfast was yummy with loads to choose from although service was a little unorganised and they seemed understaffed at times. Cocktails in the sun in the evening and lots of restaurants nearby to walk to. Old Twon a 10 min taxi ride away. Had flu during the holiday so didnt enjoy as much of Madiera as I would have liked, but can not fault the hotel. Would go back.

“Impressive view & service”

We really enjoyed the hotel & facilities. Excellent beach view and amazing outdoor swimming pool. Staff were also kind and resourceful. The spa is also very good (although expensive) and the breakfast was excellent and with a wide variety.

“We really liked the Pestana Grand”

It's November, it's around 23 degrees and it's time for breakfast around the pool with opens views out to sea and palm trees swaying gently in the breeze. This hotel is brilliant for a relaxing winter break, at quiet end of town but actually only 5 mins walk to a small shopping mall and about I hour by foot into Funchal centre - use hotel's free bus if walking is too much. Lots of restaurants in easy walking distance and several are 30 seconds outside the hotel. Two large outdoor pools are wonderful but of course distinctly cool, best for lazing around in the sun, indoor/mini-outdoor pool if you need to be a bit warmer. Rooms are clean and very comfortable. Don't take your teenagers unless they are self-starters at entertainment or happy just to lounge around.

Area recommendations

Botanical Gardens in Funchal. You can make a circuitous cable car journey from port area to Monte, stop off, and then again by cable car from Monte across to Botanical Gardens.

“Lovely hotel, room and breakfast second to none, didn't want to come home!”

I thought the Hotel Pestana Grand in Madeira was the best hotel we have stayed in. The staff were all pleasant and courteous and couldn't have been more helpful. On the last day we had a later flight, but the staff still allowed us to keep our car in the hotel parking even though we had technically checked out and allowed us to use the hotel facilities right up until the point we left the hotel. The only bit of a grumble was the meals that you can book in the hotel on an evening were quite expensive for the quality of the meals themselves, which were not particularly spectacular compared to an equivalent Italian meal at a local restaurant. Other than that we have no quibbles at all.

“Polite friendly and efficient.”

Lovely people and good at what they do. Breakfast was excellent;English, continental and German styles. Chambermaids thorough and fast. Any problems dealt with immediately. Want towels? Then the head Housekeeper will bring them if no one can do it faster. We had a very pleasant, frustration free rest. And the salt water swimming pool, superb.

“What an amazing hotel !!!”

We loved this hotel so much we are going back next year something we are dead against normaly,the service was superb and all the staff were so friendly it was conveniently positioned with an array of superb restaurants close by i cant speak highly enough of this hotel and cant wait to go back.

“We will return as soon as possible!”

This was an exceptional holiday for us made perfect by the hotel. We had a seaview room which we found very spacious, comfortable, clean and bright.The staff were always very helpful, caring and polite. We did eat at the hotel most days including the breakfast. The food and service were excellent. We have no complaints and lok forward to a second and longer visit.

Traveller's tip

Do try to book a trip on a catamaran - see the dolphins. Also, take the cable car ride and view just about everything!
