A budget travellers’ bargain! Warm welcome, friendly, spotlessly clean. All sorts of languages spoken or understood. Breakfast includes those delicious small bananas, not a spec of chemical in them. Ideally situated in the old town, minutes from the Areobus stop, buses and coaches, walking distance of the port. Plenty of coffee shops and restaurants nearby, as well as the splendid market and a supermarket. And attractions too: the Se, tourist information, Sta Maria quarter, swimming pool, sea front. Thoroughly recommended.

Mr Horta is a star, very friendly, very helpful. The location was also superb in the old part of town: we could walk to everywhere we wanted to go in just a few minutes (old town, shops, teleferico, cathedral, beach, swimming pool, pick up point for levada walks). Others have mentioned it's located up a hill, which it is, but it's a very small hill. I wouldn't have thought it worth mentioning. We did ask to move rooms after a couple of nights because we were near a noisy neighbour's dog, which they did for us and that was a great improvement. There were roadworks outside for the duration, which meant we had no traffic. I don't know how noisy the road would be normally. I'd go back, definitely: the room was all we needed, the family were lovely, and the breakfast was pretty substantial too if you wanted it.

Friendly, clean, wonderful surroundings on the side of a beautiful valley close to the sea.
Top marks for the swimming pool and garden. Free tea coffee and cake all day and an honesty bar that was well stocked. Would certainly return and take friends.

Modern, clean, friendly.
The Continental Breakfast pretty good for a small hotel.
I ordered the Full English but was a bit disappointed with the fact that the sausages were actually those tinned hot-dog sausages. Not the greasy spoon heart attack food I was hoping for.
I have stayed here twice. It is in the centre of "town"
The walks and scenery are excellent around Machico, but that is the case all over Madeira.
It has an imported sandy beach.

The emailed directions were perfect and we arrived with no trouble to this delightful vineyard set on the hill near Calhetta and were immediately welcomed by attentive reception staff. Tea was brought to us on the lawn, overlooking the sea, while paperwork was dealt with and it was the most relaxed registration we've ever had. We adored our stay - couldn't have been better. Both receptionists were exceptional in courtesy, efficiency and local knowledge. We loved the levada walks we walked and the pool, set in the gorgeous gardens, was a pleasure to jump into on our return. It was a privilege to be among such amazing antiques in this 17th Century Quinta and fun sitting with other guests round the enormous dining table at the delicious breakfast. We had supper on the first evening as we were too tired to explore and although it wasn't fabulous it was wholesome enough, the view was great, and it was ideally convenient.
The view from our bedroom was stunning, down to the sea, through cerise flower laden tree branches.
We will definitely return to this Quinta. Thank you for a wonderful 2 days.

Joel and his son Bruno are the greatest hosts you will ever meet. Their hotel is immaculate and the amenities are many. We spent nine nights as if in the comfort of our own home. The kitchenette was fully equipped and I was able to prepare our vegan meals with foods I bought at the nearby supermarket. Every morning we would find a bag, hanging outside our door, that was filled with freshly baked loves of bread. The bed was comfortable. The bath was charming with its classical Portuguese style tile work. Joel and Bruno both speak excellent English along with four or five other languages. I could find no fault with Vila Marta. On the other hand, Madeira is shaped like a steep cone so half of our walks were easy down hill jaunts. The other half of our walks of course were uphill. Funchal has an excellent public bus service which stops nearby the Vila Marta that allows you to bypass the uphill walk. Bruno will help you to navigate the bus system. He will also be happy to sign you up for tours which pick you up at the hotel or to arrange a taxi ride with Mr. Rodriquez. Joel has a quick dry wit and is an entertaining conversationalist. He is very proud of his hotel and offers comforts you would expect from larger hotels without the noise and bustle of downtown Funchal. It is a perfect hide-a-way for anyone seeking to enjoy the ambiance of a high beautiful patio view of the ocean. Our recommendation, as world travelers, is to go to Madeira and stay at Vila Marta with Joel and Bruno.

Beautiful hotel, newly renovated with a very fresh appeal. I was looking for a few quiet days after a manic and hectic two years with no real holiday. Aqua Marina gave me just that. i ordered a massage everyday and the food was so good I ate 3 out of 5 days at the restaurant. The weather was awful with 50m waves in November 2014 so do take something to do or occupy yourself with if you travel at this time of year. Good gym, great views. Really great staff - so friendly and helpful just lovely really. Would go back at another time of year to use the pools.
