“Will go back again”

A budget hotel, centrally situated with pleasant and helpful staff. An adequate continental breakfast. This hotel is very clean and good value for money. No air conditioning, but our room had a fan which was useful at times.

Dining
Although the hotel had its own restaurant, we did not dine there due to the number of organised parties based there, and being told that we would have to share their menu. Funchal has any number of good restaurant throughout the old town, new town and harbour areas.

“Great location.”

In the heart of Funchal, which brings with it some noise in the early morning hours! But a very pleasant and helpful front-desk staff, and an enjoyable breakfast which was part of the price. Would definitely stay here again.

“Hotel Windsor - Central Funchal”

The hotel is very convenient for all facilities in Funchal, everywhere is within a 10-15 minute stroll. Location/cost balance is very good and the rooftop terrace and pool are real bonus. It is more 2/3 star than 4 star, but local rating systems always vary so should not be assumed to be equal everywher. Rooms were a good size and were clean. Pillows could be a bit better and some aspects of the rooms were a little tired, but there is some re-furb work going on at the hotel. There was some noise from outside the hotel during the morning rush hour, but the hotel is right in the middle of town so this is to be expected. Apparently the rooms at rear are quieter but smaller. The restaurant now does lunch and dinner as well as breakfast. Restaurant takes cards but hotel does not, which seems a bit weird! There's a taxi rank 50m from the hotel. Just round the corner from the hotel there's a square with cafes/restaurants/bars. This is great for an afternoon drink as lots of local students meet there so it is really pleasantly lively around 4-5 pm.

Area recommendations
The old town is great as it has typical narrow, cobbled streets. There are restaurants all along the prom and in the old town. The waiters outside trying to get you to come in can be a bit of a pain, but we just took it as a laugh and had a joke with a few of them. Monte and the Tropical gardens are splendid and there are spectacular views from both cable car systems. If you are going to the Botanic Gardens the best way to get there is by bus - the most exciting route is the 31A. Better than any ride that Walt Disney has come up with! In general Funchal is a great place for people-watching with plenty of outside tables at the bars and cafes. The yellow bus tour is quite expensive for what you get, but the trip to Sao Vincente and the Volcanism centre and caves is well worth the cost.
When to go
Any time, it never gets too hot or too cold.
Getting around
There is an excellent bus network and taxis are plentiful.
What to pack
Temperature varies from 17-29 degrees summer to winter, but take a brolly and light waterproof as they can get heavy rain showers.
Must see
Monte, the Tropical Gardens and the volcanic caves at Sao Vincente.

“Great location”

I would recommend this hotel to those that want a convieniently located, good value place to stay. It is rated a 4 star but ithe whole experience was more like a 3. That didn't detract from our stay. Breakfast was cereal, yoghurt, fruit salad, bread rolls, cheese and ham. Sam each day but it was tasty.

“Small, friendly and central”

This is a small hotel in central Funchal. It has an Art Deco character. The staff get to know you quickly, they are multilingual and know the area well, so are also very helpful. Our room was small but immaculately clean and the whole hotel gave the impression of being well maintained. There's plenty of the continental style breakfast, even if, like me, you eat neither ham nor cheese. Surrounding area can be a little noisy, it happens in city centres.

Area recommendations
If you want a big choice of restaurants, head to the Old Town, but most of the better quality ones seem to be the other way, though they can be harder to find, look up side streets. Steer clear of the marina for food.
Dining
One of us is vegetarian, the other not. We had been warned we were unlikely to find vegetarian food. This was not the case. In fact we rapidly concluded that any restaurant that had vegetarian choices was likely to be a good restaurant all round. We had some superb meals.

“Budget Hotel in a central location”

The Hotel Windsor is ideally situated for exploring the capital Funchal. It's location is near shops. Most restaurants in Funchal are either in the old part or near the Marina, all easy walking distance from the Windsor. The one thing to bear in mind is that this is not a 4 star hotel but more a 3. The breakfast is very basic but sufficient for most people. The rooms do not have air conditioning but fans and whilst we had a handheld shower there was a shower head coming out of the wall which was not operational. It can also be quite noisy as some rooms back onto a side street where drivers seem to back up the entire road when parking. Overall if you want a centrally situated hotel and a good price then this is adequate.

“Great location for winter holiday”

As it was winter, I enjoyed staying in the centre of Funchal as the town is quite pretty and has plenty of places to investigate. For a summer vacation, I would most probably choose a hotel by the beach as they offer more facilites and comfort. For some reason they gave us the triple room with a double and a single bed, which are not as nice as the double rooms. The rooms are quite basic, but fine. They could do with updating the pillows as they have those horrible ones with square bits of foam inside...urggh. They also charge 50 cents a day to rent the fridge, which seems a bit petty to me (just include the fridge as standard). The breakfast is not good.

“A lovely hotel in the heart of the real Funchal”

If you want a good four star character hotel within easy reach of all amenities, then The Windsor is for you. It is a beautiful Art Deco building with five floors and a swimming pool on the roof, situated one minute from a large supermarket and various pharmacies should you need them. The old city with lovely romantic pavement restaurants and the marina are each ten minute's walk away, as well as access to local and island wide bus routes. If you do hire a car there is some parking space at the hotel which is necessary because parking on the road the hotel is situated on is very limited. The staff at the hotel are multi-lingual and extremely helpful. The rooms are spacious, fully carpeted and include a fridge and TV. Other reviews talk about the noise, but this is part and parcel of staying in the city centre. The Rua das Hortas does get busy during the morning and evening as it is used as a traffic thoroughfare, but we suggest closing the windows and using the fan if you are sensitive to this, or asking for a room at the back of the hotel. We were in a front room, but our sleep was never disturbed by traffic noise. The hotel is like any hotel in a busy area and therefore you will see local people in the same situations as in any other city - but we never once felt unsafe. All in all, we would recommend The Windsor for anyone who wants to experience normal Funchal life in a comfortable and accessible setting. A lovely hotel.

“reasonable value”

First room was noisy and smelly. Transferred to quieter, smaller room. Cramped but clean. Receptionists were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Parking space very limited and cars can be hemmed in if you want an early departure. (Official car mover does not arrive till 09:00.) Nice atmosphere. I would not rate this hotel as four star, but it is reasonable value and has a good central location.

Area recommendations
Area between Cathedrale and Parca do Municipio, including Rua Camara Pestana, for cheap restaurants. Old town towards Forte de Sao Tiago is picturesque but you have to run the gauntlet of numerous beseeching restaranteurs.
