“Excellent accommodation at a reasonable cost”

We had a sea view room on the 4th floor with balcony. Comfortable ensuite room with a pair of conjoined generous single beds. Room was clean, neat and well maintained during our stay. Breakfast (included) was a little uninspiring but a minor criticism. Swimming pool very clean and well maintained, as were all the public area. Basement garage with key access a major boon if hiring a car (recommended in Madeira, only if you are a confident driver and good at hill starts!). Free wifi in lobby area appreciated but a bit hit or miss. Courtesy bus into town handy, when not needing the car. Overall excellent value for money.

Area recommendations
This hotel among others to the west of the town centre. Quite content with location, busy enough without being in anyway rowdy.
Getting around
Hiring a car a major boon for freedom of movement. However drivng quite challenging with severe gradients and mega precipices. We tried to chose bus routes which removed some of the really scary roads which are quite plentiful in Fnchal. Take a sat nav if you have one with European maps. Although not without flaws, it was really handy and also meant there was at least one poorer Portugese speaker than myself, as "she" made a real meal of pronouncing the roads.
What to pack
A folding brolly as an parasol or if caught in a downpour. A micro sized polythene poncho just in case it rains as it did for us on one day. Sat Nav, if driving.
Dining
Piquinho Crentra II. Excellent value and quality Brazilian Style Barbeque restaurant, high up with a panoramic view over the town.
Outdoors or beach
If you have time, walking the length of the beach of Porto Santo is an enjoyable challenge. Boat or 20 min flight to get there. Miles of sand and warm water.

“No beach access”

Nice hotel with good service. Basic breakfast is not for 4 star hotel. Hotel does not have beach access. Shuttle bus to Funchal with not convenient schedule.

“Good hotel - reasonably priced”

Situated to the west of Funchal - the hotel runs a courtesy bus into the city centre (takes about 1/2 hour to walk). Two swimming pools, small gym, large lounge with nightly entertainment & excellent self-service breakfast with no queuing. We were on the 13th floor and had great views. Buses from outside the hotel into Funchal, to Monte (toboggan run) and to the west of the island. Hotel staff were very helpful, especially the girls who cleaned our room. Rooms were clean and tidy, all with balconies & small fridges. Loads of restaurants nearby. Would definitely use this hotel again - good value for money.

Area recommendations
The Hotel District of Funchal as it is very conveniently situated for city centre and sightseeing.
Getting around
Unless travelling to the west, you will need to get the bus back into Funchal and then work out which bus runs from which bus stop. There are maps and timetables available but then need a bit of studying first. Buses are fairly frequent but some do not run between 1.00-3.00pm - not so convenient for the tourist.
Dining
Lots of restaurants around the Hotel District (Lido area). Some more authentic than others. The Espada (black scabbard fish) is excellent. Unlike most continental countries, the Portuguese are quite generous with their vegetables - and there is a good selection. Prices are fairly reasonable although note that they often add a cover charge (about 2 euros per person) to cover bread, etc. Wine is reasonable by our standards but, as here, a 10 euro bottle in the restaurant can be purchased for 3 euros in the local supermarket.

“A perfect fit!”

Hotel Alto Lido was a very pleasant, friendly hotel which catered well for couples now free of their children. It provided a courtesy bus into Funchal at very convenient times. Two pools were clean and very pleasant. All in all very successful!

Area recommendations
Anywhere within 3 miles or so of Funchal - ravel into the capital is very easy.
Must see
Nuns Valley - allow 2-3 hours to see amazing views and meet the locals.

“Good facilities”

Good hotel, but next to a noisy road. Helpful staff, and convenient location. Courtesy bus into town, and near the sea.

“Excellent hotel service”

The hotel is in the Lido area of Funchal which is where most of the modern hotels are situated. There are numerous restaurants to choose from in the area. The hotel itself was well situated right opposite the bus stop to go into town and also up to Monte. The airport bus stop was also right opposite the hotel. The reception staff deserve a special mention as they were very helpful and informative.

“Hotel pas mal”

Nous avons fait des tours et des levadas et on a bien profite de la piscine apres. Le resto assez copieux mais pas forcement aussi bon. Agreable, beaucoup de bons restos autour.

“In der Umgebung des Hotels Alto Lido befinden sich viele Restaurants und Shopping-Möglichkeiten”

Das Hotel Alto Lido ist ein ruhiges, gepflegtes Hotel. Für Kinder allerdings nicht unbedingt geeignet, es gibt weder ein Kinderschwimmbecken noch einen Spielplatz. Das Zimmer war komfortabel, im Badezimmer war die Beleuchtung nicht optimal, leider gab es auch keinen Kosmetikspiegel. Zum Zentrum von Funchal braucht man zu Fuß eine gute halbe Stunde, es fahren aber ständig Busse, es gibt sogar einen kostenfreien Shuttlebus des Hotels. Das Frühstücksbuffet ist reichhaltig, das Personal sehr freundlich.

“Liegt auf einer Durchzugsstrasse”

Wenn man ein Zimmer in dem unteren Stockwerk/strasssenzeitig bekommt, dann wird man nicht gut schlafen können.

Touristen werden ausgenommen. Am besten man geht im Supermarkt und kauft Take-Away essen; schmeckt auch besser. Im Markt (Mercado) im Funchal sind die Preise nicht nachvollziehbar, also vorsicht.
