A beautiful hotel with excellent food. However on the day of our arrival (8th September) Funchal was sunny and warm while our hotel at 500 metres was in the clouds and the weather was cold and rainy. We would probably not stay again as our main reason for travelling was for some warmth and sun, but in high summer I suspect the drop in temperature would be welcome. Another word of warning would be that the car we hired(1.2 Polo) was barely able to climb the road to the hotel even in first gear!

"Twenty min walk to town. A few restaurants nearby."
At checking given first floor "garden view" room while reservation was made and paid for, more expensive, ocean view. Fortunately with one trip back to reception this was quickly corrected.
Internet ok in the lobby but no connectivity in the room.
Overall fair value for the price paid.

Hotel Savoy Gardens is an exclusive 4 star hotel located in Funchal that will guarantee guests a wonderful Madeira holiday …More
This holiday was the 5th time my wife and myself have been to the Eden Mar. We generally only go there once per year, but when the receptionist remembers you on arrival, well that says it all. Our stays have varied between one and two weeks but always have something in common, the exemplary hotel. From the very clean and comfortable rooms (with all you need for a stay), to the wonderful staff (never even the slightest hint of a problem and nothing is too much trouble, through to the food and service in the restraunts, the fully equiped gym. Tours of the the gorgeous gardens, cooking demo's, good local entertainment. There really is nothing to fault this hotel. If this is 4 star, who wants 5 star?
We went for 2 nights - Caught the Aerobus(45 mins away) very convenient and gave us a nice look at the scenery - becareful the times on the internet and the bus-stops are different. The bus stop was in front of the hotel - great with luggage! We arrived at 10am and our room was ready which was really nice! Our room 212 was lovely, big with a fabulous sea-view balcony but because of its low level and near the pool I got attacked by mosquitoes.
The food in the hotel seemed rather pricey but a few metres from the entrance is a great little café on a balcony where we had the famous Bolo de Caco with chips for 4€- yummy! In the evening the menu was 32€/ person so we went out and behind and around the Forum shopping centre there are quite a few great eateries. On our last evening we ate at the Rodizio restaurant facing the hotel we had the mini Rodizio 14€/pers which was more than enough.
The free shuttle into the centre takes about 15 mins and was great! The town is lovely, people are friendly and speak very good English. Bondii coffee & Opan café is excellent and cheap. We went up to Monte on the cable cars - which was good . The beaches are stone but nice.
The hotel breakfast was very impressive there was EVERYTHING.
Staff were helpful, especially the 2 blond ladies in the Spa and the breakfast staff - the guy on reception on the Wednesday night was not too helpful with a minor issue, which was a shame.
November was lovely and quite and a few Saga tours residents.
We have stayed at this hotel each year, and sometimes twice a year, for some time.
Wonderful place and great staff. This year we noticed that the reduction in staff numbers does compromise the quality of the visit but it will not stop us returning next year.
This hotel is ideally suited for a fantastic holiday. There are plenty of areas in the hotel complex to relax, eat, sunbathe, drink or swim. It is easily within walking distance of Funchal and only a 4 Euro taxi back up the hill. There are dozens of lovely restaurants in the locality; all about the same price and all serving an extensive selection of Madeira cuisine plus the usual familiar dishes. Local fish is plentiful, nice and available in all the restaurants. I cannot fault this hotel for location, service, price or amenities.
