Adequate hotel near the interesting stuff

Posted 27-Aug-2013
Pros: location, breakfast
Cons: service, AC
Location: Near the Grund, Neumunster Abbey, Bock Casemates, etc.
Room was hot as a furnace and came with an AC unit that produced a noise like a cement mixer. Although staff agreed this was a problem they were unable to furnish us with a new unit or a new room and instead provided a fan. This resulted in rather sleepless nights as the room windows open into a narrow airshaft where the air is much hotter than outside so opening the window or running a fan doesn't help much, you *need* something that reduces the tempreture. On the street ~20C, in the room (per the broken air conditioner) 27C. Staff assured us they had no available rooms but the internet claimed there were some available to book. Not impressive. Other than that breakfast was good, room was not fancy but perfectly adequate, and it was an easy walk to visit all the interesting old parts, the Grund, etc.

Satisfied without any frills

I was satisfied with my one night stay in a single room. The room was small but a little better than I expected for the price and location. A fan was provided in place of air conditioning. The ladies at the reception were polite and helpful. The train station is across the road and the city center is a 10 minute walk. The area behind the hotel may not be safe but it is easy to avoid. The accommodation was basic but I found the breakfast very good.

No issues but won't stay again

It is conveniently located across the main train station and that was the main reason for my booking. The hotel staff was not very friendly, although I had no significant problem. The hotel and rooms are old, and there was no air conditioning in my room (just FYI). If you open the window, there is too much noise given that the hotel is on a busy street. Also, there are apartments across the street and can be a problem for those who mind (curtains closed no air coming in and too hot). The breakfast was standard but in basement with no allure or window. The neighborhood is a bit sketch at night, I guess given the proximity to the train station. You can walk to the city center and old town area but it takes a while.

Great quality for the price

Perfect location - a short walk to everything you could want to do in Brussels. The room was exceptionally clean and modern. Only two complaints: the TV didn't work and they keep the front door locked 24hrs. Shady part of town?

friendly and comfortable

A beautiful, comfortable hotel that is close to the train station. The only downside is that (on a Saturday night) the street was very noisy (a great deal of revelry - loud voices, car horns etc.) heard throughout night and early morning hours. Not for light sleepers.

Convinient Location at the expense of aesthetics.

I arrived at City Hotel before my check in and administration let us get into our room before time. The room was pretty messy, but after the routine cleaning the room was as good as new. Really nice hotel for its location, doesn't matter that the rooms are small, it is right next to the train station and the banking district.
