“Fab location, really close to the shps, promenade, and brill places to eat out and have a great time”

The Shangri La has views of the famous fun fair and beautiful beach and when you look out of your sea view window it is like looking at a picture it is so perfect, the sunsets are amazing. You have great places to eat and to name a few - The Pourtal, The Misfit and if you want a fun place to have a drink then its the Ye Olde Kings Head all walking distance from the Hotel, the Hotel has a great bar on the top floor with great outside areas to enjoy the view. We would also recommend you hire a bike from the Beach and head towards Venice Beach and further, on the way back stop at Venice Beach and enjoy the weird and wonderful people performing for you whilst enjoying a few beers !

“Great Santa Monica Location”

Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica is in a great location - close to the Pier, SM Place and the restaurants/shops in the Promenade. Everything is accessible by foot once in Santa Monica. Check in procedure was very smooth and easy. Rooms are very well maintained with spacious bathrooms. Not much room for luggage storage though. The hotel has an excellent rooftop bar with oceans views and of Santa Monica Pier. Would definitely come back again.

“Sparse accommodations with uncomfortable bedding. Great location but will try elsewhere next time.”

The staff was flakey from the start. The suite I reserved was not ready when I arrive so they said they would call when it became available. The promised time came and went with no call so I phoned the hotel. The room was ready. Walked into an extremely sparse room. The size is nice but the furnishings were awful. Note the bedding—uncomfortable, thin cheap comforter, starchy sheets... The rooms around were almost all empty. The balcony was nice. It's great having a fully stocked kitchen in the suite. Los Angeles has a lot of hospitality options and I will stay elsewhere next time.

“Excellent Experience”

We stayed at Shangri La as our first stop on our honeymoon and had a great time there. We were in a larger room with the separate lounge room which was spacious and very comfortable. The facilities available and service from the hotel staff was outstanding. We definitely recommend this hotel if you want comfort, great service in a modern environment!

Area recommendations

Santa Monica is a nice distance from the hustle of LA and third street promenade is just around the corner from this hotel! We spent a few days shopping there and also ate on the promenade.

When to go

We went in October and the days were still warm but the nights were nice and cool. If you want to swim maybe a little earlier so it's not too cold!

Getting around

If you want a tour and to see as much as possible - the Starline Hop-on Hop-off bus tour for 24 or 48 hours was great. Cheapest way to see as much as possible and pick-up is outside Banana Republic at the top of the Promenade. Taxi to the airport is a fixed rate pf $35 +tip from the hotel which is reasonable if there are 2 or more passengers (far better than the shuttle buses).

Shopping

Third Street Promenade all the way down to Santa Monica Place at the end. The Hop-on Hop-off bus takes you past a few shops and stops at The Grove also.

Dining

Best meals were at Cabo Cantina for excellent mexican and the Greek Stop N' Cafe - great cheap food!

“Great location”

Great location! It's right there by the ocean, and walk to all the interesting spots. The location is bit hard to find though. It's on the corner of Arizona and Ocean, but the hotel sign is hard to see, especially the sign for the car entrance. We knew it was there but had to drive in circle to find it.

Third Street, the Pier, the walk along the ocean make very relaxing, stress free area for just a weekend get-away.

“A good stay!”

The Shangri La is a lovely hotel in a great location in Santa Monica, short walk to shops, restaurants, Santa Monica Pier and the beach, I would recommend it for the location alone. The room was quite small after other hotels we had stayed at but the bed was very comfortable, bathroom okay but nowhere to place your toiletries, a full mini bar was provided. It has a lovely courtyard area, very private, with a swimming pool and comfortable seating and a bar on the rooftop so as to see the sunset in the evening, just a nice hotel and a great location.

Santa Monica is a very nice area, everything is there for you.

“Top class hotel in good location”

Great hotel and good location. However when we went to check in they had no record of our expedia booking. They eventually found us a room but without the fold out bed setee for our children which we were expecting. They then tried to charge us $25 a night for each fold out bed but after some protest they gave us them free. Valet parking a little pricey at $33 per night but overall staff were very friendly and we enjoyed our stay.
