“great hotel, neighborhood sketchy at night”
The beach view is a bit marred by a parking lot. Our suite was amazing cool though. There was a stylish street art/graffiti theme. Lots of funky places nearby. Organic macrobiotic right across the street, ginger tea at Mao's around the corner was great too. We ran into agressive panhandlers after dark. Overall, it seemed like an authentic taste of Venice beach
“Great location, but rooms need to be cleaned better”
There were bugs in my bed. Didn't bite, but was still quite unpleasant to discover them.
“Only Game in Town?”
The Erwin appears to be the only game in town unless one wants to stay at one of the rather seedy looking hotels in the Venice beach area. However, I think the Erwin strives to provide good value and good service. The staff were excellent- Housekeeping, Front Desk and Porters, friendly, cheerful and helpful. My room was as pictured, but had an odd smell, not sure if it was a cleaning product or if a previous guest had spilled some cologne. Eventually got rid of it with window open. Was not crazy about the brown carpet. The bar was stocked with an array of stuff and the $3.00 bottle of water was larger than the $2.75 bottle from the machine down the hall. The bed was very comfortable. I felt safe leaving the window open. There was some noise from outside but crumbs, this is Venice, so bring ear plugs if that sort of thing interrupts your sleep. Also, if you are near the front, traffic starts very early- 5 am or so. The hotel itself was very quiet. TV provided more channels that the Hampton Inn. I would recommend the Erwin. It is probably half as much as a hotel in Santa Monica. There are so many places in the neighborhood to explore (away from the beach, which was clean and empty except for the homeless population and some surfers.) There are the famous Venice Canals, the Abbot Kinney shopping shopping district, the Whole Foods complete with palm trees. Get up early, buy yourself a cup of coffee, and explore!
“Disappointed.”
The hotel itself was ok, but the neighborhood did not inspire safety. You cannot walk out on the boardwalk at night. During the day, the neighborhood was less wild, but not a calm and relaxing environment. Perhaps the hotel in a different location would have received better marks!
“Hotel Erwin, fun & funky!”
I chose Hotel Erwin for its location, my son was keen to explore Venice Beach. Our room was comfy and surprisingly quiet. The reception staff were very helpful. Staff in the cafe were great and the breakfast good quality. The rooftop bar is a great place to relax and enjoy the view. My son and I enjoyed our stay.
“Hire a better staff!”
Rooms were not clean to normal hotel standards, hotel staff seemed unproffesional and we called to have an "engineer" come up to our room to help with the broken iPod dock; nobody showed up....EVER and they didn't even call. The hotel also has a roof bar that they allow the public in and it was so busy an annoying Friday and Saturday nights. You also have to pay $5 a day for wireless internet and $28 a night for overnight parking. Yes, that is right, you have to PAY an additional fee to park at the hotel you are already paying to stay at. RIDICULOUS, especially for a dirty room.
“Great location for exploring Venice's beach, canals and neighbourhood -best hotel in the area”
Everything right on your dorrstep and a great roof cafe
“Fantastic staff and location are the standout highlights of this great hotel”
Wonderful, laidback but super helpful staff in this funky Venice hotel made our LA stay absolutely amazing. Loved this place so much, can't wait to return
“Great Location”
A charming "boutique" hotel in a very lively location. There is a sign at the front desk with advice for visitors, and the last suggestion was to not judge or rate the local environment, but to just enjoy. Excellent advice. When we first arrived we felt a little uncomfortable about the local "culture," but after a few days we felt right at home, and enjoyed its charm. The rooftop restaurant/bar is a must visit. You are one block from the very colorful and fun boardwalk and the beach. Venice has a lot to see and do. Don't miss the canals after which Venice was named. And be sure to walk along Abbot Kinney Blvd and enjoy its shops and restaurants. There's something for everyone here. The only "downer" was the expensive per day valet parking fee. You can park on the street for free or in a lot nearby for half the cost of hotel valet. The fee lots do not allow you to leave and return. The hotel valet has unlimited leaves and returns, so it might be worth it if you will be using your car a lot while you are there. Also, they charge for internet service, but if you join the Joie de Vivre club before booking it is complimentary. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. They seem to genuinely want to make sure you have a great stay. Overall, we loved the hotel and would definitely stay there again.
“Great times on the beach”
Hotel was FAB! They did EVERYTHING they could to accomodate us. Didn't like the location of my room at first (off the alley) so they moved us with NO PROBLEM. Room was ALWAYS cleaned and stocked upon leaving and returning. One of the valet guys was even nice enough to help us find last minute flowers. No complaints here!!
