“Good location, uncomfortable room”

Fantastic location, and neighbourhood, and really friendly staff, but unfortunately apart from the Lobby the parts of the hotel I saw were not in a great state of repair. My room was particularly disappointing - worn old furniture, a shower door that had no means of closing, an incredibly cramped bathroom, a very old television with no ppv movies, and probably only of the most uncomfortable beds i've slept in for a 4* hotel.

“Moderately priced Bloomsbury area hotel”

My single room was square and cozy with a sizable bathroom. The single room my friend got was L-shaped and less conveniently arranged. We were happy to the hotel's discount card at one of the Charlotte Street restaurants. TV was smaller than one usually sees these days, but adequate.

Area recommendations
I've made many trips to London, and used to stayed in the Paddington area, which is a good crossroads for Underground service. Bloomsbury is prettier and more historic (Blue Plaques everywhere), and once you master buses, just as convenient to the rest of the city.

We very much appreciate the effort you have taken to submit your review. We are pleased to know that you have taken the advantage of our restaurant club scheme. As for our televisions, we are currently in the process of replacing those mentioned and I am pleased to confirm that a number of rooms have already been fitted with newer models. Thank you again for your comments and we look forward to your next visit.

Thank you for your kind feedback. Our guest bedrooms vary in size and we would therefore recommend choosing our double rooms, offering additional space with a larger bed, next time you choose to stay with us.

“Hotel Review 1”

The hotel itself was great, near to multiple underground stations, the British Museum, Hyde Park, and a bunch of restaurants. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the quality of the room was what I would expect. When we got to the hotel the name that my hotel was booked under was wrong. I don't know if this was Expedia or the hotel, but it caused some confusion and it took a while to get checked in, since I didn't have a way to get my reservation number. Overall very good experience though.

“Rathbone - no room for my backbone!”

I knew from reviews posted on-line that rooms at the Rathbone were small, but I never guessed just how small a room could be! Miniscule would be a better descriptor. I had a single room which I could barely turn around in, and I'm a small person! There was just enough room for a twin bed and a luggage rack on one side of the room and a desk & wardrobe on the other, which left approximately 2 feet of space between them. The bathroom was so tiny that it was actually difficult getting in & out of the shower. For the average price per night, which I felt was unjustified, I felt squeezed physically & financially!! If I had known just how tiny the rooms were I would have stayed elsewhere. That said, the Rathbone was clean and the bed was comfy. The staff was friendly and helpful. I also liked the neighborhood - close to the Goodge St. tube, the British Museum and lots of great pubs!

Comment from the hotel's management
Thank you for your kind comments regarding the friendliness of the staff and the excellent location of our hotel. We provide different room types to suit our guests’ requirements. Our single rooms are the smallest and most affordable accommodation we offer. Alternatively, the double and executive rooms provide that extra space you are looking for with the added comfort of a double bed. The single rooms are most popular for many of our guests who prefer to stay in a good central location within walking distance of some of London’s main attractions but wish to stay within a budget. Once again thank you for taking the time to post your review.

“Amazing location and quiet street surrounded by great restaurants”

This is the quietest hotel I've stayed in in London, and I work here frequently. It is tucked away between the Tottenham Court Rd. and Goodge St. underground stations and is surrounded, literally, by excellent restaurants and pubs. The two underground stations are, respectively, a three and four block walk, but the 18 restaurants in between, make it worthwhile. It is also less than a 10 minute walk to Oxford Circus, the British Museum and Charing Cross. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the hotel is fairly old but very clean and charming. The room was very small and the bathroom, shower and TV were microscopic in size, but it was meticulously clean and everything was in working order.

Area recommendations
The Rathbone is in Bloomsbury and I try to stay in that area; partly because my work is in that area and South Kensington, but also because it is usually quieter than some other parts of London and is central to both the City and outer boroughs/zones. This is also an attractive area of London, with real neighborhoods that you can walk through and small neighborhood pubs and restaurants, as opposed to big chain restaurants or tourist stops. The only downside is cost; some of the hotels, even the smaller chains, can be pricier in Bloomsbury than in other areas of London.

“Pricey for what it is”

Maybe you are paying for the location...? It's a lot of money, but I don't know what my expenses really covered. I still had to pay for Wi-Fi. Guhh...companies need to realize we are in the 21st century and have free-wifi for paying customers. Nothing was particularly bad. The room was clean, the hotel was old--but had a rustic feel to it. But I was not impressed by a whole lot, other than the location.

“A Nice Hotel”

My wife and I had a nice time during our stay at the Rathbone. The rooms were beautiful and well designed. The staff was helpful getting us ice and directions etc.. The room was small. I am not a regular visitor to London so similar hotels may be just as small but we had problems fitting all our luggage and shopping bags in the room. We arrived on Friday and the noise fron the Duke of York pub accross the street was loud and lasted well into the night. The location was good, near the Goodge underground station. I had an oyster, an underground pass, so I imagine any hotel near the tube would be just as good. I missed my internet connection. It was just too expensive for us as was the breakfast. But it was good to have a kettle in the room for coffee, tea nd some nice biskets. There are also some good restaurants nearby which the staff quite rightly pointed out. I would stay at the Rathborn again but I wouldn't make a point of going there. there.

Traveller's tip
Avoid pub nights. The noise is not that bad but if you have a choice why put up with it?

“Excellent hotel, Perfect Location”

Despite what I quickly read about this hotel I had to book at at last minutes notice. I was completely surprised when I arrived, mainly due to the great proximity to Oxford Circus and the trendy Soho area. This was a great hotel for the money, to be in such a great location I would have expected it to be more than double the price I paid. The hotel itself is surrounded by many great pubs and trendy restaurants as well as a Starbucks right outside the front door. All the shopping you need is a stone's throw away. I will recommend this hotel to anyone
