“Spotty but good overall”
This is a nice chain type hotel, but it it is under construction. Noise was no issue, but I did not have air conditioning despite it being advertised. While London doesn't usually require it, it is July and I was on the third floor, so it was a bit warm for sleeping in comfort. The staff was fairly mixed too: some of the people working there were very friendly and helpful, like the desk clerk who helped with some difficulties I had with the wireless system, but I also needed some more tissues because of an allergic reaction I was having and a different desk clerk wouldn't get me any, telling me that "housekeeping had just left."She took my room number and said she said someone up with them but I never did get any; ended up blowing my nose on the extra toilet paper in the room. Would I stay again? For the same price, I'd try again, but I wouldn't pay more for it. It was conveniently located and other than the AC issue, very comfortable.
“Doubletree London”
The hotel is well situated, near an underground line (very close to a couple of train stations) and restaurants. It seems clear the Doubletree has recently taken over this property, as the hotel (outside the lobby area) is in shabby condition. Carpets are ragged, molding is missing on woodwork, and they badly need to repaint common areas. Rooms are small but comfortable, with nice bathrooms. Be careful about using the phones, as charges are very high. However, the location, general comfort of the rooms, and a relatively nice lobby made it a generally good experience and fairly good value.
“Okay”
The only problem I had with this hotel is being treated fairly. At check-in I felt other customers were treated better than we were because they had not booked their trip through a travel agency. Housekeeping was completed even if the do not disturb sign was on the door. Otherwise the hotel is in a great location.
“Good hotel, good location, cosy rooms.”
We got to sample two different rooms as we stayed here twice with a break inbetween. The rooms were small but the quality of the room was so nice it didn't really matter. Very comfy bed! The walking distance from Holborn and Russell Square tube stations was about the same so we alternated between the two. The only issue is they tried to charge us extra for accessing the internet from two different devices, although they backed off quickly when we questioned the charge. We used an iPhone and an iPad, so in this age of having multiple devices, a per-device charge (which we only learnt applied when we went to check out) isn't really fair, it should be a per-room charge or included in the room rate such as we've experienced in the US. Internet in general at hotels is expensive anyway, but the WiFi at the McDonald's down the road was unreliable which is why we bought it.
“Disappointed for a tourist”
Breakfast buffet was good. Room was way too small. It wasn't really close to anything we wanted to see, so we spent for ever on buses and walking. London was wonderful, but hard to find someplace nice to eat. People were friendly. We actually had a man get off the bus and accompany us to where the right bus was for us.
“Good hotel with nice rooms”
Good hotel, newly renovated, easy walking distance to most West End sights. Some snags: Only one guest elevator. Breakfast is buffet only and not a very good buffet. I would avoid it and go out to Patisserie Valerie a block away on Sicilian Avenue instead.
“Good value, good location”
I had a short stay in London and wanted to be close to the theater district and close to a Pickadilly line to be able to get to Heathrow easily. This hotel is two blocks from the Holborn station, close to Kings Cross and the British Museum. My single room was small but well done with every thing I could want, and very quiet. Very nice breakfast. Got a great rate for this location on Expedia.
“Overpriced, average service”
Unfortunately this was not a good stay. The first problem was that the air conditioning was broken on one of the warmest weekends of the year (so far). A desk fan was provided, but this was an inadequate solution - it only re-circulated warm air and it was too noisy to use at night, which meant uncomfortably hot nights. I did notify reception (hence the fan) but it wasn't fixed before I left. Noise was another problem - not from other guests, but from the lift which was just outside the door to my room - the walls are obviously not very thick in this hotel and there was no soundproofing. The bathroom was also average, the main problem being the shower head was located in a nook between a structural joist and the wall, which made it hard to angle to get good coverage. It was almost pointless having a shower at all - the best I could get out of it was a weak, tepid stream. The in-room safe was small, too small for my laptop and in the top of the wardrobe, which, for people of a small stature like myself, made it difficult to access anyway. Breakfast isn't included, but if your wallet is too heavy, you can lighten it by spending £9 to buy a breakfast voucher which can be traded in at the hotel restaurant. You do get a warm cookie (warmed in a microwave), which is a nice gimmick, but they really need to focus on improving the fundamentals first.
“Return to London”
I used to stay at this hotel about once a year, but hadn't been back since it's refurbishment. The refurbishment was extensive redesign of the public rooms and complete redecor of the bedrooms. The hotel has gone "upmarket", and perhaps lost a little of it's "all things to all people". The bar area is much more "trendy" and less likely to attract passing trade. The bedroom we were in was tiny and the new furniture had left it a little cramped. The decor was first class, however, and the shower room was very modern. The dining room has moved to the basement and there was no doubt that the staff numbers have fallen and it looked like the breakfast turnover and therefore queues have gone. The food was typical large hotel buffet. We didn't eat any other meals there, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby. The hotel is situated a little way from most attractions, but our room at the back was very quiet for London, which suited us. We used to attend conferences there, but the organisers decided to go elsewhere as the prices began to climb. We didn't look at the conference facilities. We will probably stay there again, as we now know and trust the hotel and vicinity.
“Wouldn't stay again”
Not worth the stay for the price. Rooms are very small and the shower was terrible.
