“Fairly average”
I had a lot of little niggles with the hotel - the duvet was a little too thin and there was no spare blanket to pop over the top of the bed, the shower leaked and the first person on the reception was a little surly (although the night cover was exceedingly helpful). It did the job, but I think I'll look for somewhere more central the next time I need a hotel for work.
“Excellent priced hotel for the area”
The hotel is in an excellent location, very comfortable and with a good choice of restaurants.
“Convenient, clean & close”
We went to a concert at the 02 and booked this hotel!! We couldn't believe how close and convenient the hotel was!!! 30 seconds if that from custom house dlr station ;0) room was very clean!! Would use again ;0)
“A good location for events at Excel”
This is one of many hotels quickly built for business people. Convenient for Excel. Would not recommend it to London visitors unless huge deal on price. Bathroom is a prefab cubicle. Clean because new. Trains are packed to go in and out of there at fair time.
“Good Location for the business traveller but that's about it”
I'd recommend this hotel for those needing to stay in the area on business for a couple of nights max. The location is great, next to the tube etc but the hotel rooms are very basic, the bathroom is something akin to a toilet on a train but somewhat smaller. There are a range of eateries within the hotel and the food I ate was good, I stayed here because I couldn't get into anywhere else but if you would like a romantic weekend away or travelling for leisure this hotel probably won't be for you. With the range of hotels on offer in this location I'd stay elsewhere. Business for one or two nights is fine, for anything else I'd not recommend it.
“What a find!”
We wanted a hotel that was close to the O2 Arena (we had concert tickets) but still handy for the City and the West End. Custom House ticked both boxes brilliantly. Its location directly opposite the DLR meant we could be in town in less than 20 minutes and at the O2 in 10. The hotel is nicely appointed and has good facilities. There were also some very nice little touches that set it apart from other hotels (the free ironing room for example). The personal greeting when you switch on the TV was also very welcoming. We are regular visitors to the capital and for our money Custom House will be our first call whenever we come again.
“plain and simple”
We were only stopping one night and wanted a hotel literally to get some sleep. The 'custom house hotel' room was very small but clean and for the price you can't complain. We would stay there again, but probably not if we were staying a little longer. Also don't follow map on google if your walking from 'Canning Town' tube station on how to get there, it sends you on a pilgrimage. Otherwise its quite simple to get to.
“Sometimes hotels are a good deal for a reason...”
Custom House Hotel was our home for 2 weeks in Summer '10. I guess that's a long stay for this hotel, the hotel staff seemed surprised at check-in. When we arrived at the Custom House Excel DLR station (very conveniently across the street from the hotel) we noticed the "smell" mentioned in previous reviews. This funky smell had permeated the hotel lobby but thankfully not the pub or our room. The room was very small for two beds you had to shimmy around the end of the bed to get anywhere. The bathroom was unlike anything I'd ever seen, basically an airplane bathroom with a "shower tube". Bathroom was very cramped and clearly built for a quick shower before a conference at the Excel center. While there was an "air conditioner" on the wall it was basically a barely functional fan, our window had to be left open at all times to try and cool the room. The beds were outfitted with a heavy blanket and no top sheet so sleeping wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world. The location while convenient to the Excel Center and DLR really wasn't great if you're sight seeing London as we were. Expect a 25-30 minute ride to central London with very little to see or do along the way. We met some locals at the hotel pub who mentioned they were skittish about leaving the hotel at night. I guess they felt it wasn't in a great area of town. The hotel pub food was passable but overpriced. We found the Fox @ Excel (directly across the DLR platform) to be a better deal on food and drink.
“Average hotel”
Altogether it was a rather mediocre experience. The room was quite small. The good thing was it was located directly at the train station.
“Good for Excel”
A good base if you are in East London for business or the Excel, ready access to DLR and Excel itself. London City airport near by - short taxi ride. Probably not the best for holidays.
