“Good hotel - promoted as luxury - but lacking competition”

Grand Union Central is the hotel you will be recommended in Ljubljana as the place were "celebrities" and "Presidents" stay. So it all sounds promising. But actually it is a very average business hotel. Service is good, rooms are ok. Lobby bar has a decent offering of drinks and sandwiches. Breakfast is quite nice. But dont expect a 5 star hotel of western standards. Location is great though.

Area recommendations

Central Ljubljana is beautiful, with the river and bridges, outdoor seating at restaurants.

“Double rooms = two single beds”

Great hotel, location, awesome breakfast buffet. One weird thing was the double room was actually two separate twin beds we had to push together. The comforters were weirdly small, as well, being exactly as large as the top of the beds. But all in all, great stay, and the city is fantastic and right out the front door.

“Great choice”

Just spent one night, but it fully served our needs. Overall good value. Staff very helpful. Nice room. Good location, centrally located to where you want to be.

Area recommendations

Immediate area around hotel. Pedestrian zone on both sides of the river. Lots of restaurants, cafes, shops. Nice atmosphere.

“Great locattion, old city, you could eat off the streets.”

Very clean hotel, a bit formal and quiet, but quite nice. Great breakfast, very professional staff. Definetely one of the top 5 in Slovenia.

“Not impressed”

I was disappointed in the room quality (like broken stuff) and its fitness center. The only advantage this hotel offers is its location.

“Nicest you'll find in this small city”

The hotel was not as "grand" as the website makes it appear but the rooms are clean and suitable for a weekend trip. Apparently it is the nicest one in this small city. The only issue that I had was the noise. We could hear everything from the kids on the street at 5 am to the cleaning chatting outside our door early in the morning. The location is great though, right on the square and near all the stores.

Traveller's tip

Eat at the best restaurant in town which is very modern cuisine called Valvasor. Its pricy (150 euros for 2 of us) but worth the trip alone and they have a neat wine selection of Slovenian specials. Ask for Marco the manager. Get the truffle handmade penne with alfredo sauce as starter, and then the truffle sea bass dish as a main course..wow..delish. Its a short 10 minute walk from the hotel.

“Where you want to be”

Character, charm with convenient to all that you can see and do in a long weekend or short weak in this beautiful capital...without stepping into a car or taxi.

Traveller's tip

A couple blocks further from the river can save you up to a third of the cost per night....but if cost is not the principal criteria...this is the address.

“would definately stay there again.”

Great hotel, very central and within walking distance to all the attractions- 2 mins from triple bridge. The breakfast was fantastic-loads of choice, fresh home baked bread and croissants and selection of cold and hot dishes. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

Don't forget to try the cakes in ljubljana. Great selection at Zvelda- on Wolfgang4. Also great mexican restaurant- Joe Pena's cantina if you fancy a change from Slovenian cuisine. If you've time and you haven't visited lake Bled, it's well worth a visit and there's a bus that goes there. Beautiful place.

“Excellent location and breakfast!”

The rooms are a little bleak, but you cannot beat the location of this hotel, the service was good, and the included breakfast was great! The hotel has an indoor pool on the top floor with nice views of the city, and there is also a sauna, though it was broken when we were there.

Traveller's tip

Be sure to go to the castle - great panoramic views from up there. We walked up and then took the funicular down...it is brand-new and extremely cool!
