“Would definitely go back”

When we looked on the map we wondered if we'd chosen well. But we should not have worried. The Alif is in a really nice quiet street, handy for the Metro and Lisbon's major department store with a couple of nice restaurants a few minutes away. The hotel is very smart and new, with excellent fittings. Our room was very nice and excellently cleaned and tidied every day. The breakfasts - the hotel does not have a restaurant for other meals - were top notch, with a good range of items including fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, ham and cheeses. The hot items were scrambled egg, toast and sausages. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful, and spoke good English. The only thing we would ask for - as with almost every other hotel we've stayed in - is a couple of comfortable chairs in the room so you don't have to sit on the bed.

Area recommendations
LIsbon is a fabulous city, with something for everyone. We spent one day in the old parts of town, one day at Belem, visiting the Mosteiro do Jeronimo etc, another day in the fabulous Gulbenkian Museum and the fourth at the Parque dos Nacoes, where the Oceanarium, where we expected to while away a couple of hours and came out five hours later, was one of the highlights.

“Comfortable stay, excellent service”

This hotel in beautiful...very comfortable, modern and spotless. I could not believe I was in a business quality hotel at such a low price. I read the reviews and still it exceeded my expectations. Friendly staff helped me book a tour, provided directions, helped me with my pronunciation. I highly recommend this hotel!!!

Area recommendations
This hotel is not near the Lisbon hotspots, but the metro is on the corner and you are a short distance from anywhere you want to go. Taxis are easy to catch and drivers are friendly and honest.

“Great customer service”

This is a new hotel, the rooms are very modern, and the bathroom was one of the largest I've seen for a hotel in Europe. I was most impressed by the helpfulness of the staff. Upon arriving, the employee at the front desk did more than just check us into the room. Without us asking, he pulled out a map, showed us good areas for shopping, restaurants, and site seeing. He also explained the metro and provided a map. He then asked if we had dinner reservations (which we didn't) and booked some for us a local restaurant he recommended. When we showed up in the lobby at 7:30 PM for dinner, he had the bell man escort us to the restaurant (even though it's a nice area and we walked around alone several other nights). A few days into our stay I also had trouble logging off the wireless internet on my iphone. When I called the front desk, they sent someone up immediately to assist me and he showed me how to do it in a matter of seconds. The staff are very friendly and want to do everything they can to help. The one downside to this hotel is that there are two "Hotel Alif's" in Lisbon. Since this one is new, most cab drivers take you to the old hotel Alif several blocks away. Before leaving, I recommend grabbing a business card from the front desk that you can provide to the cab drivers when you are trying to return to the hotel so they are not confused and can see the address.

Area recommendations
Lisbon is a very spread-out city, and we were only there for 4 days. Hotel Alif is close to the hop-on/hop-off bus tours, the bull ring, and a few other things. It's also a nice area at night where we felt totally safe. There is not much night life in the area though so when we wanted to go out to the bars/clubs we caught a cab to Barrio Alto (which cost about 7 Euro, or $10 USD).

“An overall okay experience”

Generally a good hotel with clean rooms, easy access to the metro, friendly staff and a quite but close-to-centre location. Also had a decent sized flat screen TV with reasonable channels. However, as a 4 star we found the following lacking: 1) no in-room coffee/tea facilities 2) No bathrobes 3) No bath (but the shower was pretty good) 4) Water temprature in the shower was not constant and kept fluctuating from slightly cold to mildly hot. 5) Floors not carperted (hence we could hear the people moving around each morning.

“Good value”

Great location if you are looking for a place to stay outside of tourist regions. Convenient to metro stop, and easy to reach from the airport via bus. Several restaurants available in close proximity. Large shopping mall (the english cut) within walking distance. Front desk spoke English and was helpful with directions and suggestions. Room was clean and spacious, a great value. Internet was available by 1 hr, 2 hr, or 24 hr increments. 24 hrs = 10 euro. 4 English stations available on TV. Only negative: ongoing construction behind the building started promptly at 8 am each morning.

“Delightful Lisbon Hotel”

Although not really in the centre of the city, the hotel has very easy access to the centre on a range of buses. The Gulbeikian Foundation is located very close by and is certainly worth a visit. The hotel itself is delightful, recently modernised, it benefits from a range of quality fittings in the rooms. The rooms are quiet, and wonderfully appointed. It certainly had the feel of a modern 4 star hotel, with excellent and friendly staff. There was some road work taking place outside the hotel, whilst the new rail link was being finished off, once that is done the hotel will be very well positioned to serve both the town centre and the airport, which is a short bus journey away.

Area recommendations
One has to do the old town. The best way to do that is buy a 24 hour tourist bus ride, that way one can do a range of different hop on hop off bus tours. Also worth eating are the local custard tarts, freshly baked in Belem. The Gulbenkian museum is certainly worth visiting - it is not a place that is found anywhere else in Europe and marks out Lisbon as one of those rare places to visit and see Middle Eastern art.

“Excellent value for money”

We found this a modern, quiet hotel. Staff are very friendly and location works well as you get the quiet of the suburbs but at the same time it is very easy to get into the old part of the city either via a gentle stroll or the tube opposite the hotel. Did not have breakfast in the hotel - there are several cafes (next door and across the road) - so cannot comment on the food. Good value for money - would definitely recommend it.

Area recommendations
The open topped city sightseeing buses are excellent value and cover every part of the city worth seeing. There are 3 main routes which cover everything - and with hop-on/hop-off it is very very easy to get around. The old part of the city is easy to amble around and to visit the many squaresand outdoor cafes. A wonderful city with lots to see.
Getting around
Very easy. Walking is easy as nithing is very far (compared to London). The open topped sightseeing buses are ideal and cheap, and cover every part of the city. The tube is easy and cheap too.

“Excellent 2 days break”

The price-quality ratio was very good for a 2 days break in Lisbon. Although the room rate did not include breakfast there were plenty of places around to have breaskfast. The Hotel is very clean, modern and very well located.

“Excellent hotel I was so conveniently located”

I loved this hotel very clean, small but comfortable . The metro station was a few steps from the hotel . The staff was very efficient and respectful but they are not very familiar with how to guide turists that prefer sighseething on their own they only inform you of tours, besides they have little printed information on the must see places and city attractions . I wish they had double beds or queen size beds instead of puting two twin size beds together .

“Quite central modern hotel.”

No tea/coffee making facility in the room which was disappointing, instead you have to buy from the bar for €1, and they close at 11pm. The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood and in front is the Sao Sebastiao metro station, and walking distance to the only shopping mall in Lisbon.

Area recommendations
Belem, apparently the posh side of Lisbon, where the President is residing, and lots of tourist sights in the area.
When to go
I went in first week of March which was off peak season, just for 3 days, which for me was enough to see the major sights of Lisbon and it wasn't crowded which was great. Weather was okay, temperature was a lot milder than what it was here in the UK 15-18 degrees. But if you prefer a warmer temperature and still not too crowded then maybe Apr/May or Sep/Oct might be the best time.
Getting around
Metro was very handy and very easy to follow, and it's only 1min travel between stations, and there are trains every 2 mins. It only took 7 mins to travel from S. Sebastiao (hotel) to Baixa (downtown) without any delays. If travelling for the first time, you will have to buy the Viva viagem top-up card 50 cents (€0.50) from the machine, which is valid for a year and is refundable. Then add single 1 zone/single 2 zone/1day ticket fare, YOU MUST KEEP YOUR RECEIPT everytime, in case the machine can't read the card...it happened to me once! If this happens, you will be asked for the receipt and when and where you bought the fare. On the second day I took advantaged of the City Sightseeing bus tour (already paid for) which was valid for 2 days, to get to the places I wanted to visit (Belem and downtown area), and only bought a single metro ticket on the way back to the hotel. Their bus stop is only 5 mins walk from the hotel, right outside the El Corte shopping mall, very handy.
What to pack
Streets of Lisbon is all cobbled stone, so if you're planning on walking around all day (specially in the downtown are) wear comfortable shoes or trainers would be best.
Must see
Belem Tower, Dos Jeronimos Monastery, Cultural De Belem etc. all in the area of Belem, and there is a lovely park right in front of the monastery. St. George castle on top of the hill is a must!
Shopping
For the modern side of Lisbon head to Oriente, lots of modern shops, casino etc. Adult size souvernir t-shirt in downtown area cost €9-11, so shop around.
