“Amazonia Lisbon Hotel”

The service at the hotel was excellent and the staff were always quick to help with any problems to resolve these and friendly at all times. They also spoke a good level of English which was important for my travel companian who spoke no Portuguese. The double rooms were very good value for money and room facilities were good. I would stay at an Amazonia hotel again-it is at the top end of its 3star rating.

Area recommendations
The Bairro Alto , which is directly accessible from the Amazonia Hotel, is a very busy, animated social area at night with very good Portuguese Restaurants in Rua Diario de Noticias. The Chiado, further down on the corner of the main square, has a brand new shopping mall and then leads down to the older shopping streets. Definitely visit the Castelo de Sao Jorge, walking up the winding streets through the old Graca area with views over the city.Cascais, a 5 euro return ride from station Cais de Sodre, is a must with a good beach and lovely little 'French Riviera' feel to the town.Along the line is Belem, with the Monastry, Monument of Discoveries and the best Pasteis de Natas ever. You should also take a bus from Praca de Espana, again 6euro return, across the main Bridge 25th April (commenerating the 1974 Carnation Revolution' to the goregous and totally unspoilt Costa de Caparica with immense stretches of beautiful beaches. There is even a small train the trundles up and down the many beaches to give access to those further away.Sintra is also a worth a trip, a medieval town to the West of Lisbon-take a train from Rossio station but significantlky cooler than Lisbon.Other places to go are the Gulbenkian Museum, the Amoreiras Shopping Centre ( looks like a giant chess-pieces at the top of the hill from Marques Pombal roundabout/tube stop) and a stroll around down the Avenida to Restauradores and Rossio is always good.

“if you are from North America, you will not like this, hotel.”

Hotel is located in very narrow one way residencial street. If you go by walk it is hill top walk, Close to metro but not very close.

“Everything you need”

Staff really helpful and advised on some great places to eat, and booked attractions for us. The bar staff were great, try the Lisboa Coffee. bar man knew how to make a cocktail too.The hotel was in a good location to get around, but did use the taxis as was up hill. (taxis very cheap and worth every cent).

Area recommendations
You have to visit Baixa area and go to Belem and find the Antigua Casa de Pasteis de Belem you will not taste custard tarts like them anywhere else in the area. Take a boat trip along the river, it gives you a totally different sight of the City. Unfortunatley because we went at Easter many of the museums and churches were closed, but the archetecture was still amazing. Each area was different and you won't get to see everything in a weekend. Need to go back
Events and shows
If you get a chance go and see the Fado. Some of the bars have special evening where you can experience the music. Totally different to any other music.

“Refreshing escape”

The Amazonia was quiet and more spacious than some European hotels, and was appropriately appointed throughout. The pool, though small, offered a relaxing break after a busy day of sightseeing. The neighborhood features a small shady park with fountain and beautiful tiles, and a nearby Nepalese restaurant that was quite good. Desk staff was at times overwhelmed with long lines of people in tour groups. The hotel is a short walk from the Metro (Rata), though it is an uphill climb returning.

Must see
Take the train to Sintra for a day (get Lisboa card for discounts to sites and train fare) to see the National Palace, Pena Palace and gardens, and the Moorish Castle.

“Good hotel for short break”

Hotel was well maintained and staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast buffet was well stocked with both hot and cold food. Hotel is a bit out of the centre of the city but has a local metro which gets you into town in 5 to 10 minutes. Local area is reasonably quiet but is at the top of a hill. This leads to marvelous views from balcony (if you're high enough up) but an uphill walk of about 5 minutes from Metro. The area meets the Lisbon standard of shabby-chic and is quiet and clean. There is a lovely side street of restaurants within 2 or 3 minutes walk (just at the dog-leg on Travessa Legua de Povoa - behind green painted barred gates). Armoreiras shopping mall less than 10 minutes walk away. We can definitely recommend this hotel for short breaks to the city.

Area recommendations
Alfama district is an experience. Many narrow winding streets, lanes and staircases leading past some picturesque buildings and viewpoints to the castle. Be prepared to get lost a few times! Be sure to visit the Monastro de Sao Vincente de Fora and the Pantheo Nacional, both on the outskirts of the Alfama but spectacular buildings with wonderful views. Also, the Miradoura Santa Luzia has great views and lovely cafes. Going out of town, visit Sintra for palaces in the hills and Estoril for beautiful, picturesque beach.

“A somewhat rough diamond, but very comfortable.”

After booking this hotel, other travel books were critical of it. The decor might be less than a US name brand hotel. That said, the hotel itself will keep you comfortable, the staff was extremely helpful. The choice of breakfast buffet or in room breakfast is not a free, it comes with the room, deal. No other meals are offered, but the staff will direct you to nearby great restaurants. The underground is a few blocks and the walk to the central city is hilled and a bit long. ( cab is inexpensive.) maintenance is swift and unless you are trying to impress, it is a great value.

Area recommendations
go see the central city, a short cab ride or good walk away. Ride the touir bus early on to get a feel of the city and to discover your interest.
Getting there
Don't even think about driving to the hotel without a GPS and a map ( the street is only two blocks long.), and given the travel choices and parking fees, it was fun to explore on foot, underground, and hop-on-and-off tour busses. Take the regional train to Sintra from central city for a pleasant tour of that city. Try Fado music.

“Needs updating”

The staff were very courteous and helpful. I was disappointed that food was not available all day long and only at the bar. I was not able to get a full meal, and there was nothing within walking distance of the hotel to eat. The carpeting is very worn and frayed in places. The heating controls in the room were not flexible as to how to heat the room and the heat when it came on was quite noisy. The mattress was very hard and of poor quality, although the sheets were nice. The hotel had an air of a 70's or 80's hotel that had not been updated and money was not spent on quality. Again, the staff was extremely helpful and courteous; but the hotel overall is not the quality I expected.

Area recommendations
I would recommend something more central to the downtown area. I thought this hotel would be close to the airport, but it is no closer than downtown locations.
What to pack
Pack a carry on piece of luggage. Then take everything out and put only half of it back in. I cannot emphasize this enough. One pair of jeans can last three weeks, with another lightweight pair of slacks. I packed three sweater sets for early March and 3 additional shirts/tops. I could have gotten by with two sweater sets and one or two tops. Whenever you are going to be in a hotel for more than 1 night, wash out underclothes and a top or two. I packed one skirt to pair with my tops for dressy occasions. Forget extra shoes, unless they are sandals or Birks. Wear a very good pair of all-purpose walking shoes. Mine were black and could go dressy or not. Travel sizes of shampoo, etc. are great. With your extra room in your carry-on luggage, you will soon find that it is full from travel stuff and things you want to buy and take home. With only one carry-on luggage, it so much less hassle. I also took a backpack for my camera and lens.

“great value hotel”

I was surprised how modern and nice the hotel was and it was cheaper than the hotel I stayed in on a previous trip to Lisbon, the ameneties included breakfast at a reasonable charge and a small bar/tv room. The front desk staff were very helpfull, and recommended us to contact reception if having problems with rogue taxi drivers.I would certainly consider staying here again in the future.

Getting around
Taxis are quite cheap around town but for some reason trips from airport can be dodgy so negociate a price before hand.If you are getting ripped off on arrival refuse to pay and call someone from the hotel staff. This works. The Metro is brilliant and easy to use so its the best and cheapest way to explore the whole city.Try the trams in the older areas downtown.
