Stayed in the main building and at first was shocked at the small room, the sloping hallway the low ceiling in the bathroom BUT then read how this was an old coaching house from 18th century and that Thomas Paine used to meet with his cohorts there - well then that put it all in perspective and I had a brilliant time.
The morning breakfast was very nice as well.

"Reasonable hotel for an overnight or short break"
We used The Forge as an overnight stop whilst touring the area. The location was quiet despite being on a main junction and the rooms had adequate, clean and spacious facilities but they could do with some further enhancement/updating for our taste. We visited the Buxted Inn for our evening meal which was about 15 mins away and served delicious meals. The breakfast at the Forge was generous and tasty and the waiter and Reception staff were pleasant and friendly. Good value.

The Shelleys is spread over a number of historic houses, and is very well-located right in the centre of historic Lewes. There is lots to see and do in and around the town, making it a great place for a weekend break.
The staff at reception were very friendly and welcoming. Those in the restaurant were clearly a little inexperienced so not everything ran smoothly, but they were very polite and helpful, and quick to sort things out.
The hotel itself is full of character - quite a maze of corridors and stairs, but that's all part of the charm. Despite being on the High Street it was very quiet, and had the weather been better I'm sure we'd have enjoyed the pleasant gardens.
Our room was a little small and only had one chair, but was otherwise clean and comfortable.
Food at both dinner and breakfast was excellent in terms of both choice and quality, and dinner was well-priced.
