“Good hotel but loud at night depending where your room is”

I enjoyed my stay at the Golden Gate. The room was small but clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the staff was nice. As well, they've got some of the best looking casino dealers in town. The only issue I had was that my room was close to Fremont Street, and since there was a stage next to the hotel it was very loud at night, which mostly didn't bother me since I was out most of the night except my last night, so I wasn't able to sleep until the show ended at 2am. Other than that though it was a good hotel, not my first choice for staying downtown, but it was still fine.

Area recommendations
Fremont Street is much more fun than the Strip.

“great! but wait! read on”

I like the hotel I'm a old school Vegas nerd. The room was nice windows opened right onto fremont street, This was nice because I'm not early to bed. However by sat night I was over it. Band played til past 2am was leaving sun and needed to leave early. But the hotel staff was nice bartenders were good and I would stay again.

Area recommendations
sam boyd fremont is nice small rooms but good location, and plaza is now redone looks great, swingers club is nice in plaza. love downtown.

“Old classic hotel but..”

This hotel has great history behind it...oldest (opened in 1906) hotel on Fremont street experience...Rooms and the restrooms are small (for single bed room) is the downside of this hotel...also, no great view from hotel if you get the wrong room.... Somewhat noisy as the music from fremont st can be heard, but it gives it a lively atmosphere... Otherwise, you will find nice flat tv, water bottles, some snaks, necessary restroom accessories..Location of this hotel is fantastic....fremont street experience starts from this hotel....bartenders are really good looking tooo;-) Overall, even if you dont like the rooms, considering the history behind it, you should feel good that once you stayed here....

“Split Personality Hotel”

The first room we stayed in was awful! The room was so tiny and had a full bed, not a queen. The bathroom was so small that my knees hit the wall every time I had to use the restroom. Our shower was a dark corner that my boyfriend could barely fit in. The room smelled like a hamster cage and the AC wouldn't turn on because of temperatures outside and the fan only blew hot air. The room in general was dark, dingy and depressing! They couldn't switch us to another room until our second night. Our second room was a total step up! The only bad thing about it was the shower didn't drain quickly. If we would have been in our second room from the beginning it would not have been so bad, but that first room really set the tone for the weekend, and it was not good. It was so small and dingy that it was hard to breathe! While I enjoyed the trip and enjoyed gambling in their casino I will never stay at this hotel again.

Area recommendations
Fremont Street was much more enjoyable than the strip. The atmospher was more laid back and much more entertaining than the strip. The only thing that the strip had that was really funny was all the women in mini-skirts and stilettos walking about in 42 degree weather.

“downtown”

hotel is ok, restaurant is very good (try the prime rib special or the pancakes). Table pit in the evening is a lot of fun w/ dancing dealers. Only problem is the noise. Freemong St. blairs loudly until past 2 am, and garbage trucks in loud at 6 am.

“NOT TOO IMPRESSED”

If you would like to be right on Freemont and not going to be in your room very much its ok. The hallways smelt of musty mold. The rooms are small but comfortable. No hair dryers or irons in the rooms.Staff was nice and the room was always cleaned. Its up to you if you would like to stay here.

Area recommendations
I think the strip would be a better option because there is more to see. You can go to Freemont street while you are there. The hotels are newer and would have more updated things in them and may not smell like they are 100 years old.

“The old ones are the best”

I came from the UK for a week of sightseeing and shows - Golden Gate fits the bill perfectly for its location and price. My double room wasn't huge, but was clean, cosy & plenty big enough for two people. Downsides? My window faced inwards onto the roof , so my only view was of concrete, ducts, and anyone on the opposite side of the hotel who'd left their curtains open. Oh, and if you want to get to sleep before 1.00am, you're out of luck; there are a few thousand people right outside your front door having a party, but surely you knew that already? This is Vegas after all. Otherwise, all good, had no problems during my stay. The (few) staff I met were friendly and helpful, the diner downstairs does some decent food, and the table dancers in the main casino/bar area looked gorgeous. It was also nice not having a twenty-minute walk between my room and outdoors, like on the majority of the Strip's mega-hotels.

Area recommendations
Fremont Street seems an excellent deal for a vacation spot. It's ridiculously cheap, for a start. There's the light showevery hour and at least three bands performing outdoors every night. Add to this a motley collection of street entertainers and Elvis lookalikes, a heap of tacky souvenir shops and your pick of the buffets and restaurants (which aren't half bad) and you're made. And if you venture further afield, the manifold pleasures of the Strip are easily accessible via the Deuce bus service (see below).
When to go
Avoid high summer unless you enjoy sunstroke.
Getting around
If you're not in too great a hurry and don't mind getting up close to your fellow tourists, the Deuce bus service is a good deal. A three-day unlimited travel ticket cost me $20, and travels from Fremont Street, where I stayed, to Mandalay Bay on the south end of the strip every fifteen minutes or so, 24 hours a day. End to end can take an hour or more, so allow plenty of time. Cab rides from Fremont to the strip can be prohibitively expensive, so this was a real help. Plus the drivers are mostly a good laugh. The on-board PA was used to announce the locations of pawn shops and strip clubs alongside the better-known Vegas landmarks, and to cheerfully threaten to run over pedestrians if they didn't move out of the bus's way.
Shopping
The Venetian mall seemed to offer the most choices shop-wise, but Vegas as a whole is either designer boutiques I can't afford or cheap tack I don't want. There are specialist shops scattered around, so it's mostly a matter of patience, depending on your preferences. There's some unusual merch in the CBS TV Research Centre in the MGM - the place to go if you want a 'Big Bang Theory' tee-shirt or a 'Dexter' mug.
Dining
New York, New York wins my vote. The 'America' diner had the friendliest waitresses ever. The Nine Fine Irishmen pub has some excellent beers and atmosphere, and Il Fornaio just has great food. Well recommended. Otherwise, the Rainforest Cafe at the MGM is great if you have kids or a childish sense of humour and enjoy being harassed by tropical storms and animatronic chimps while you're eating.
