Wonderful hotel in an out of the way location. Doug was a perfect host and the room was outstanding. We booked through Expedia, which did not adequately describe the unique breakfast arrangements, although they were perfect for us. Directions to the hotel should be more clearly stated in the Expedia booking information.
I have stayed at this hotel under its previous name of Riverbank a number of times and a few times as The Barley.
It seems to be a property in limbo. The bar which is the whole ground floor of the hotel has lost its way and you will eat your breakfast in an empty bar.
The breakfast is, however, very good and the skeleton staff are very friendly and obliging.
There are no shaver sockets in the bathrooms so remember to take an adapter for tooth brush or shaver. The promised one never materialised. remember to ask for the WiFI code early when you check it in as it is not listed anywhere.
The rooms are quite contemporary in style, Roman blinds over the windows and the decor is sound, executive style. However, look beyond the Roman blinds and the windows need repainting and cleaning up.
The main problem is that this place lacks professional management and has dropped to the feel of a B&B.
This was typified by when I asked if I could leave my suitcase for the day somewhere after check out I was assured that as I was the only guest I could have the room all day as it wasn't needed the next day. As I finished my breakfast I was then told a guest that stays two days a week only wanted the room I was in (even though the rest of the rooms were empty) and I had to vacate my room early. However, as soon as I went back to my room (9:15 AM) the cleaners arrived asking if I was leaving, followed by a chase up by the same gentleman.
At £80 per night,it is poor value & not recommended.
my second floor room was on the bay with a splendid view sounds of the surf (also night until 11 or so and early morning sounds of traffic ) the traffic noise was not a bother for me as I sleep soundly. My big bed was comfortable, the bath was fine, I had a big bay window. Breakfast was tasty. Everything was clean. Everyone friendly. I am sure I made the right choice in the Lugger.
Me and my partner enjoyed our stay at the Fountain Tavern, we found the staff welcoming and were asked on arrival if we would like to book for dinner in the evening, we had already made alternative plans so I cannot comment on the food.
We found the room comfortable and I especially liked the features such as the window seat and the stained glass in the cupboard which was turned into a wardrobe. The bed was comfortable and the carpet was a high pile and lovely under foot.
My only downpoint was that the bedside tables were quite wobbly and perhaps a lower quality to the rest of the room, however this did not affect our stay.
The Tavern is within walking distance to the centre of Penzance and the harbour.
In the morning we went downstairs with breakfast and were greeted with a choice of cereals and toast, a full Cornish breakfast (full english with extras), and a couple of additional choices. Me and my partner both had the full Cornish which was delicious.
We would definitely stay at the Fountain Tavern again and would recommend it to any of our friends and family.
Only stayed for one night on our way home from the Scilly Isles. Two minutes walk from the Scillonian. Great welcome and wonderfully spacious room with everything we could have needed for a longer stay. The noisy plumbing was explained and really wasn't an issue. The evening meal was excellent with 10% off the bill.
