“Wouldn't Stay Again”
Felt like a two star motel with some upgrades. Only a few pros, lots of cons: Pros: Staff helpful and friendly, close to shops/skiing, continental breakfast was better than most, free sangria in the lobby, some attempt to upgrade the rooms with nice TV etc.. Cons: Bathroom is tiny, no bath only a shower which is small and dark. No place to put toiletries. Room itself had few places to put items or sit down other than bed. It was NOISY as heck. You could hear conversations from other rooms, people walking above you and I was unfortunate to have a dog next to me. It barked for hours on end! The room view is hideous. There are mountains all around and the windows look out into the ugly parking lot. Maid service was AWFUL and we often had to ask for toilet paper/tissues/clean towels/clean glasses. The neighborhood seemed seedy and I was uncomfortable walking around at night. Hot tub had green mold around it. "Fireplace" was the heater and couldn't be turned on independently. Would never go back to this place given all the other lodging options in the area.
“Nice folks, worn down room”
This hotel is about what you would expect for the price....very nice people, but our room was very run down. They say they are renovating--maybe once they are done, the place will be nicer. But, as-of October 2011, our room was pretty shabby. The carpet was filthy. The mattress on one side of our king bed was so worn-down that I could not sleep on my back, because I would slide off of the bed. The only way I could sleep, was by rolling on my side, and using my bottom/back foot to prevent me from rolling off. Very uncomfortable, to say the least. The bath was large enough, but badly under-furnished. No place to set any bath items, other than a tiny shelf over the pedestal sink. Had to lay our bath bags on the floor, or on top of the toilet seat cover. Not very elegant, especially per modern motel standards. But, on the other hand, the desk staff was friendly and nice. The cleaning crew was average--we had to ask for shampoo and toilet paper refills, and clean towels. I've stayed in a lot of other rooms that had better in-room service. Good location, two short blocks from the large Heavenly ski lift, and reasonably quiet at night. You cannot see the lake from the hotel (at least not from the ground floor), but it was only two short blocks down a shallow hill. Lots of road work going on--I guess the CA state highway folks are trying to get the roads ready for winter. Be prepared for 30-45 minute delays driving along the lake, and worse in the mountains.
“A Refurbishment Still in Progress”
The Avalon is a work in progress. It's an older property (i'd guess from about 1960 or so) that's being refurbished. As an older property it does have a great location: you can walk to Harvey's in about 5 to 10 minutes. Some of the things being upgraded haven't happened yet, but the bathrooms are cool (slate showers and floors, etc.). The staff was very accommodating, with one exception. We were going to be arriving late and tried several times to call the hotel to see if that wold be a problem. The phone was never answered or even went to voice mail. When we arrived we found out the hotel had begun running a great special that day and they were so overwhelmed, they weren't even answering the phone. Other than that, they were excellent.
“Nice cute comfy rooms”
Just stayed 1 night, staff was very friendly and helpful. The beds were comfy and rooms were clean. Robes in closet and nice bathroom products. . Walking distance to Harrah's and outdoor concert. Would stay again !
“Labor Day 2011”
The staff was AMAZING, the location perfect as it was a 5-10 leisurely walk to the casino's or lake either way. Would definitely stay here again!!
“Mixed Review”
Skip the Mountain Man Breakfast --- was disgusting. Rooms were OK though and location is good.
“Excellent place to stay”
Avalon Lodge is a great plac to stay in the South Lake Tahoe area. It is close to the casinos for those who like to gamble, in walking distance to Heavenly Village for a variety of activities including their gondola ride and hiking trails up top (summer), and close to the "private" beach at the lake. The positives of Avalon Lodge include: comfortable bed, great breakfast (not like the usual continental breakfasts from other places), nice decoration in the room, and providing free use of their bikes and kayaks for guests. Areas for improvement include: softer sheets, a bigger counter or including a table in the bathroom, and including a second bedside table. We were definitely pleased with our stay at Avalon Lodge. As mentioned above, the location was great. Luckily we didn't go to the "private" beach much and went hiking instead because the beach was not so private afterall. It is private in the sense that people can't go there just off the street, but it certainly doesn't feel private when there are so many people there - guests from the surrounding lodges and motels have access to it, making it private for that area but crowded because of the sheer number of people allowed to go there. So if you're thinking of staying at Avalon Lodge, which we highly recommend, don't pay too much attention to the mention of their "private" beach.
“Nice Place”
We had an excellent stay and the afternoon sangria was a very nice touch. We were able to walk to most places we wanted to go and really enjoyed our stay.
“Excellent choice. Great staff. Very helpful.”
We were very happy with Avalon Lodge. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Room was spotless and newly renovated. On a quiet street close to the action.
“small and cozy”
nice hotel. very convenient location near from everywhere. the only thing that the hotel is still undergoing maintenance and repairs. the hotel staff is very courteous and nice . the hotel breakfast is not something u expect.
