“AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS!!”

We did - after looking at the rooms and smelling it (whole hotel reeked of cleaning fluid), we forfeited our money and went to a wonderful hotel a few steps away (Leon D'Oro). We are seasoned travelers, equally at home in luxury hotels or camping, but....The first room smelled, had a bed that sunk to the floor and minimalist furnishings (safe to house a college fraternity!). They showed us a second room that had a futon bed (!) with dirty sheets and said it would be made up soon (this was at 6:30 pm). Orta is a wonderful town. If you go, don't ruin the experience. Even though this hotel is on the charming square, it is to be avoided. Go to the Leon D'Oro, instead, and get a room looking out at the lake and the square - you won't be sorry.

Area recommendations
Orta is worth a trip. We had too little time to explore it as it was our last night before flying out of Malpensa airport. Save time to wander around this mostly pedestrian gem and go to the Sacro Monte di Orta. Also, there are many hiking and biking paths in the area. The Italian Lakes are not to be missed - something for all travelers from beautiful old towns to outdoor sports.
Dining
We ate at the Venus restaurant, right on the square. It is a bar downstairs, the restaurant is upstairs with a beautiful view of the Isola S. Giulio. Food was great, as it always is in Italy.

“Hotel in autofreier Umgebung”

Wer in einem richtig klassischen Postkartenmotiv (Marktplatz O.San Gulia) übernachten möchte ist hier perfekt aufgehoben. Zusätzlich belohnt man sich mit einem italienischen Antipasti/Dolci Frühstücksbüffet. Allerdings: man muß ggf. mal 1.5km zu Fuß mit dem Koffer (man darf nicht immer mit dem PKW rein) und: bei offenem Fenster schlafen ist wegen des Marktplatztrubels meistens zu laut. dafür gibt es schalldichte Fenster und die Klima. Uns hat es sehr gut gefallen. Jan
