“Room with a view”

This hotel was pretty pricey, but the lakeview was really wonderful - looking out at Lake Lucerne and the mountains. Since all the hotels in Lucerne seemed pretty expensive, even more moderate ones, if you want to splurge, this is a place to do so. The room was very comfortable and elegant, as was the entire interior of the building. The price of the room with a queen bed did not indicate that it was for one person, so on top of the room cost, there was an additional 'extra person' charge of $64, and breakfast was not included; breakfast cost an additional 35 Swiss francs per person, so we passed on the breakfast. I think that for the price charged, the hotel should not add an extra person charge, given that they do not provide breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful, but had to be reminded of requests that we made a second time on two occasions - could do better.

“A nice splurge”

Gorgeous hotel, great location. A nice splurge but after what we paid I have to say that I was offended that our buffet breakfast was not included in the room price. We ate breakfast and were then presented with a bill for the equivalent of $86 -- yikes. Most of the other hotels we've stayed at in Europe had breakfast included.

When to go
Fassnacht was so much fun -- and family friendly. Our toddler loved the Guggen music and all the costumes. We missed the big parade on Thursday but there were so many bands performing on Friday and Saturday that we didn't feel like we missed out.

“Good and Bad”

This was our second stay and the beauty of this hotel is not diminished. We were however pretty annoyed that staff did not warn us about traffic problems during Karnivale. We needed to get to the station (a trip we'd made by cab before) and we nearly missed our train. The cab fare rose from 11 swiss francs normally to over 30 because of the closed streets. A simple warning to all guests checking out that morning of delays would have saved a lot of grief. Also our bed came off its railings during our stay, luckily my husband fixed it but it was unfortunate all the same.

“Beautiful in Lucerne”

The Grand Hotel in Lucerne is a beautiful old gem sitting on Lake Lucerne. The rooms are very large and beautiful with every amenity. Location is fabulous and the restaurants are amazing although a bit pricey. Our only complaint with the hotel was that our room was very very hot and even with the air conditioning on (in Mid December) the room was stifling. We complained and it seemed to have gotten a bit better, but our best alternative was to open the windows. Also, there was a strong smell like something was burning out side of our room. It appears they were changing the carpet in the hallway on the 2nd floor and the smell did dissipate. I would stay at this hotel again, as long as the room temperature was rectified.

“Superb Experience”

Everything was top quality as you'd expect for the high price. The bar was superb and had the best martini for several years. The barman suggested great places to eat with a neighborhood feel. Location by the water is lovely and woudl stay again if i felt like splurging. Not too bad of a walk rom train station (10 min. along the lakeshore), unless you have lots of luggage

The only advice: book your table for the Sunday brunch in advance. The brunch is sumptuous and delectable but the number of tables is limited.

“The Grand National is truly Grand”

This place is amazing. Great, professional staff. Upgraded us to the Atlantik room upon arrival. We had a fantastic view of the lake and Mt Pilatus. The room was large and comfortable and was very private. It has a very authentic historic feel, almost as if we were transported to an era when customer service really mattered. Also had perhaps one of the best cups of coffee with a choice of 4 different types of sugar - from very raw to ultra refined. We even asked for some off menu items and they were more than happy to accommodate. This was a true first class experience and we'd love to return.

Area recommendations
Take an early morning trip to Mt. Pilatus. The views are amazing.

“Aussie Traveller”

A fabulous hotel full of character and with excellent staff. Check in staff were helpful, professional and anticipated our needs. Any service request was promptly fulfilled. We were delighted with an upgrade to lake view roooms and would recommend this small indulgence especially a room with a balcony. Only minor concern was the small width and low ceiling height of a step-in shower/bath - not suitable for the less flexible or tall amongst us. Location is delightful and we were enchanted with our whole Lucerne experience that the hotel contibuted to in a significant way.

Area recommendations
A must do is the Jungfraujoch day trip to Europe's highest railway station accessible from Interlaken. Take a train or hire a car to interlaken and take the 2.5 hour train up to breathtaking views. A great day out. Dress warmly, though.
