“Beautiful Hotel, Beautiful City”
This was my first experience at the Hotel des Balances, and my first experience with Lucerne. The hotel is an easy five minute walk from the train station, and the city itself is very walkable and pedestrian friendly. The front desk staff was always welcoming and helpful, and spoke excellent English. Yes, the room was a bit small, and there was no air conditioning, but after two solid weeks in southern Europe you get used to these things. What matters is that the room was beautifully appointed, provided everything I could possibly need (including a fan, hair drier and Keurig-type coffee maker) and I had arguably the best view in Lucerne from my balcony. Traveling by myself at the end of a long trip, I can't tell you how good it felt to kick back with a glass of wine and enjoy the Chapel Bridge and Jesuit church from the comfort of my own room. Venturing out, I found excellent shops and restaurants within steps of the hotel. The old walls and battlements and the Dying Lion monument are less than 15 minutes by foot, and the city is completely safe, even for a young woman walking around by herself. 24-hour desk service meant I could check out at 5:45 on Monday morning with no problem. Highly, highly recommended.
“Luzern Central”
Rooms and facilities were very good, location was outstanding and staff were very helpful with restaurant and sightseeing advice.
“Father and Son trip to Switzerland”
The hotel is close to the train station (5 -7 min walk) and in a great location - very central to all the restaurants and shops. We had a river view room which is really a must as the view of the river, town and mountains is spectacular. The room was quite large by European standards and well maintained. Good bathroom. Everything was very clean. Doing your laundry at the hotel costs a small fortune but there's a laundry only 5-10 mins walk away. Meals at the hotel are quite expensive but there are lots of bakeries and fruit stalls nearby if you want something simple and cheap. The main benefit of this hotel is its location. You couldn't get any closer to the main eating and shopping area. The hotel's dining area is literally right on the river and you can watch the swans and ducks swim by as you dine. It's one of the more expensive hotels in the town but its location and good sized rooms and spectacular views make it good value. We would have appreciated a little more personal attention from staff, but that's about the only criticism I can think of. They were helpful, responsive and courteous at all times but didn't go out of their way to enquire if you needed any assistance planning your visit etc... Overall we really enjoyed our visit at the hotel and the area, but it's relatively expensive. Like everything - you get what you pay for though.
