“a bit disappointed”

After reading a number of reviews we found the hotel a little disappointed. We've just got back for 7 nights, we found the staff quite unhelpful, the times we stood reception with a question they just ignored us carrying on with their admin - bit strange. We'd gone for a non lake view room which was spacious and very comfortable (BBC TV a plus), large bathroom, great air con. Sadly we'd assumed that the hotel had lake views from the public areas, granted if you'd booked such a room you were fine but from the pool and restaurant there are hedges blocking the view so the lake isn't visible - who'd want to stay in their room all the time. Plenty of sun loungers round the pool but a littlepack in like sardines for my liking. Breakfast medioca for a 4*. Lots of lovely restaurents just at the bottom of the garden 'so to speak' so we have a fab time discovering these - all on the lakeside with great views!

Area recommendations
Couple of good tavernas/restaurant within easy reach of the hotel.
Getting there
We travelled by train from Verona airport to Verona Station, then train to Desenzano and via bus from the station to just outside the hotel - a very easy trip, around 3 hours for less than 15 euros.

“A fairytale destination”

It was our first trip to Lake Garda and we chose Gardone Rivera region because it was quiet and we wanted a peaceful second part of our holiday as we spent 3 nights prior to this in Venice. The only dilemma was whether to pick grand hotel or hotel savoy as those seemed the best two options. I chose the Savoy based on the assumption it had a more modern feel about it and it was truly the right decision. Right from the start of my experience it was perfection. The receptionist was very warm and provided us with a free room upgrade knowing it was our first time in Lake Garda. Although I did pay for a balcony view, the upgrade consisted of a balcony with deck chairs over looking the lake. It was huge and perfect as my girlfriend loved sunbathing up there with the view of the lake rather than just the pool area. It was also great at night, as it was dark enough to stargaze and I did manage to see a shooting star. You are also able to use the sauna, jacuzzi and steam room free of charge as part of the hotel facilities. The staff were very welcoming and the receptionists were always warm and willing to help. There is a terrace area by the bar is perfect for drinks as you get a closer view of the lake. breakfast by the pool was a great way to start your day. Gardone Rivera is charming. An excellent ice cream shop next to the Hotel as well. Hotel Savoy is definitely closer to a 5 star than a four as it had many similarities to my stay in Rome at the Waldorf Cavalierri last new years

“Pretentious and overpriced”

Pretentious and overpriced, Wi-Fi low quality in our room and expensive, “free” parking problematic, deluxe room with balconey had a “French” balconey i.e. two doors which opened onto a slightly bowed out railing (misrepresented on Expedia), overpriced half board dinner, poor recommendations from staff for restaurants on the boardwalk, nice pool, on the board walk in Gardone Riviera but Gardone Riviera is maybe the least interesting of all the small resort towns on Lake Garda. Stay somewhere else.

“a restful atmosphere”

the staff looked after us really well, and we were there to relax for a few days. That is what happened. extremely fresh breakfast on the terrace, with attentive staff, very nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake. I would only stay on lake Garda with a lake view, as there can be overpowering road noise. Stay there, enjoy the lake, the small town, and peace. The only drawback was having to pay for parking in the hotel car park.

“A very quiet 'out of season' resort”

We booked this hotel in the resort of Gardone Riviera, North side of lake within 30min walk of Salo in first week of October. It was very quiet with only two points of interest within the resort, The botanical gardens and the Gardens/Museum/house of Vittorio (House,Museum closed Monday) Transport in/out of the resort was very sparse this time of year with only one bus in the morning at 0822hrs going south through Salo to the rail station at Desenzano (links to Venice/Verona (Airport)/Milan) and two in the afternoon to return. Going/Returning further north was a similar problem, only one in the morning and two in the late afternoon. There are buses to Brescia, via Salo from the resort which will link to same railway line for Venice/Milan and the bus service is more regular. The lake boat service is also very limited to the resort. (7.40 euros for slow boat, 10.40 Euros for fast one) If you arrive at Verona on a Sunday then go on to Brescia and catch bus from there, not Desenzana, virtually no buses on a Sunday and only 2 boats in the afternoon! Trains to Venice are pretty regular from Desenzano or Brescia but beware that there are 2 trains - Eurostar at 22 Euros each way pp, seats booked in advance, or 'cattle class' less than half that price but you may have to stand! No hire cars available that time of year. The local restuarants were all open and, being quiet not very busy, the ones we tried were all good. Hotel v. good, no complaints, would again in season at busier resort.

When to go
Out of season if you want Very quiet resort
Getting there
(Out of Season) From the airport (Verona) take the courtesy coach outside the airport to Verona rail station (Verona Porta Neuvo) about 10 Euros and 15min journey. From Verona, train towards Milan getting off at Brescia, the station after Derenzano, Eurostar costs nearly twice as much as local trains. The Eurostar guarantees a seat as the local gets very busy, the journey takes about 1/2 hour. There is a better bus service from Brescia to Salo and northwards to Gardone Riviera than there is from Derenzano. Takes longer but is cheap. You could walk from Derenzano station to the lake (3/4 mile) then get boat but they are sparse off season with last one around 1620hrs. Buses on Sundays are even rarer. There is a smaller airport at Brescia that some airlines use which would mean transfer time is reduced
Getting around
From Gardone there are buses to the North (Riva) and south (Brescia or Drenzano). The service is very sparse out of season. Also Boats to most resorts along the Lake. Buses to Derenzano linking with train to Venice (Plan for a long day - 1 -2 hrs on train depending which sort) No Hire cars out of season
Must see
If you've never been to Venice, Go there while you have the chance! It's easy to get there but very expensive to eat or drink so take packed lunch if on a budget!

“Highly Recommended”

This is rated as a four star hotel but could have easily been rated a 5 star. The room was spacious by European standards. It was clean and modern. The bathroom was large. Turn down service is provided. If you have a car, parking is provided, but at 10 euros/day. We stayed in a room with a balcony that overlooked the lake and it was beautiful. The balcony could have been bigger since it only accommodates two people. The pool is large and very clean. The lake front side of the hotel had numerous restaurants and small stores. You could even walk along the lake to adjacent hotels. Service was excellent and the staff was very helpful in providing directions and information for local attractions. The included breakfast was excellent. Would easily stay there again.

Area recommendations
Many surrounding towns are within 1 hour drive time, but traffic may be busy. Suggest you not travel there in August due to the many Europeans that take vacation that month. Very close is the Vittoriale, the home of Gabriele d'Annunzio, a famous Italian writer. The best way to get around is by rented car with a GPS unit.

“lovely place”

Older style hotel but very good , beautiful views over the lake. plenty of resturants to choose from within walking distance. gardone area quite quiet , but ideal if you want relax and explore the area. ferries stop nearby run fairly frequently to all differint parts of lake garda..The staff at the hotel very pleasant and helpful would go back again.

Area recommendations
Bandolo holds a huge good quality markets pretty town. accessible by ferry .
Getting there
pre booked a taxi from verona airport to gardone hotel though a little expensive well worth it particulary as flight was delayed going out. it took about 70 mins so was great if you are on a short break saved a few hours of travelling on public transport giving more time at resort.

“perfect hotel and location”

cleaned every day, hotel staff were great and very helpful

Traveller's tip
recommend getting on the regular boats to different parts of the lake, some lovely other towns and very cheap to get around. Hotel prices probably higher high season (august) but were told to come back one day around august 15th as they have firework displays and music concerts on the lake.

“Had a great time!”

We didn't know what to expect before arriving at the Hotel Savoy as we booked last minute but were very pleased with our stay. The reception staff were extremely pleasant and helpful with any enquiries we had during our stay. Our room was only a basic as we were on a budget this year however it was extremely pleasant and very clean. The decor was not tired. Bathroom very nice. The lady down in the spa was really friendly toward us and welcoming. I enjoyed eating breakfast out on the terrace by the pool each morning and the coffee was very good! There were always available sunloungers but we did go just out of peak season. Pool very nice for a refreshing dip and kept clean. Wish we had been able to stay longer!

Traveller's tip
The ferries at Garda can be quite pricey compared to Como, but if you want to travel up to Riva at the top of the lake, you can catch the bus for only 3euro which is air conditioned and literally takes one hour. The ferry can take a lot longer!!

“A Nice Hotel but?”

The hotel is very well situated within easy reach for those travelling by train. Reception excellent always answered my emails and gave me clear directions on how to reach the hotel from the nearest train station Desanzano. Staff were always polite and welcoming , pleasnt service at breakfast and in restaurant. I did plan to relax on this holiday however music is played everywhere in the hotel far too loud and there was little escape , unable to sit in bar or on the terrace with beautiful views of the lake as loud music of no particular genre on at all times. There was a well-being centre with a quiet room but it would have been nice to have been able to sit in the bar area or on the terrace and chat to other residents without constant loud music. On asking we were told it was hotel policy to play music at al times. The staff were really great no question too complicated always ready to help. I had a delicious evening meal, lamb cooked to perfection . Hotel is well-served by boats and local buses to other areas of Lake Garda so days out were super . Thanks to the staff , my room was great.

Traveller's tip
If you are taking the train around Italy then this hotel is easily accessiblew by public transport
