“This is a true Palace”
The hotel was fantastic. We loved everything about it, from the convenience of being able to easily walk there from the train station to the views, the breakfast, the room and decor. The staff was wonderful and helpful with everything we requested. We will definitely be returning.
“better than the rest. fantastic views.”
Bar service a bit slow but the rest was 4x
“Not the best choice”
The Palace Hotel is not the best choice for a visit to the Lake. Check out other towns around the lake as all are accessible by boat. Como, located on the south of the lake, is prone to high winds, and when cold, it's very cold and uncomfortable. Outside dining is off the agenda here when other towns are calm. The Palace offers a clean but uninspired room. Dining is overpriced and their meal deal is no deal. You end up paying for the maintenace of this beautiful building with food prices and room charge. Look elsewhere for your stay. We traveled to other towns around the lake and found them to be much more interesting than Como. Sightseeing was great, shopping extrodinary, and outdside dining delightlful. While our hotels in Rome, Florence, and Aviano accomodated smokers with wonderful outside areas, the Palace negleted to do so. We were lead to believe we might get a smoking room only to find out smoking is not allowed in Italy in any public inside areas. For the most part, this was not an issue for us while in Italy for almost a month, with the exception of the Palace Hotel. The only place we could smoke was in the back alley, standing against a biting wind. Not exactly what I bargained for! Also, we had great difficulty finding good restaurants in Como unlike our experience in other cities of Italy. Perhaps other hotels in Como would offer a better experience, but you would still have to contend with the winds off the lake. Good luck and enjoy your travels.
“Fin d'siecle elegance”
This hotel is right on Lago di Como. From the front rooms you have a superb view of the lake and the mountains. The smaller rear rooms are fine. They have a nice view of the cathedral and the square; you'll get woken at 6:30 by the first cathedral clock chimes. This is a superb turn of the century hotel. It is even maintained to the level where North Americans will forgive its aristocratic tiredness. I encourage you to stay there. In the morning you can stroll along the lake. Enjoy watching the local aristocracy flying float planes from the Aero Club Como, or sitting in their yachts at the Yacht Club Como. On a pleasant warm afternoon there is little to compare with a walk past the villas from the renaissance (? resurgimento?..please correct), or the monument to Volta. Returning you will pass the stark monument to the anti-fascist resistance, and will reflect on that darker side of humanity. In the evening it is pleasant to eat in the cathedral square, or perhaps in one of the more expensive restaurants in the surrounding alleyways. In any case the food is cheap and delicious. North Italian wines are very good. Yes, if you fancy yourself as a somewhat dissolute member of the pre-First World War Italian aristocracy on a visit to the northern lakes, this is the place for you.
“Couldn't ask for much more!”
We only stayed at the hotel one night, and had a dog with us. The staff were all very polite, and very accommodating. The hotel boasts an underground garage which operates mechanically, meaning that no matter what you leave in your car it is 100% safe, very useful for travelers. You put the car in the elevator, and the machine does the rest. The building is classical, and very well maintained, giving you an authentic feel. The surrounding area is very beautiful. The hotel runs a couple of very nice restaurants, and a Pizzeria and ice-cream place too. Would definitely recommend to others.
“Classic old hotel with updated furnishings”
Beautiful room overlooking Lake Como. Rooms a too small and crowded, no chairs for lounging in room but large bathroom. Great Breakfast with lots of fresh fruit and breads and also scrambled eggs etc. Located just a block from the ferry landing, right in the historic district. A short taxi ride from the train.
“Get up early”
BUT....you would think they would tell the laundry bloke not to push his trolley over the tiled floor at silly-o-clock in the morning, not conducive to a lie in.
“Como's best hotel”
Superb hotel and location
“Xmas get away”
wonderful hotel, location was perfect for walking around and exploring the town. Our room was very comfortable. Breakfast did not live up to expectations based on the rest of the hotel experience. The hotel staff recommended a local restaurant, located directly behind it on one of the squares "sociale restaurante". Be careful of restaurant staff who short changed us on our bill. when confronted they played dumb and took advantage of tourist who have little long term influence on their reputation because we leave the town and don't get to tell people about our bad experiences with them. Hope this makes a difference to someone else.
“Location Location Location”
The Palace is perfectly located on the front of Lake Como. There is some construction work on the waterfront at present which impacts the view from ground level and the 1st & 2nd Floors but still a great vista. Not sure when this is due to be completed. The traffic in front is busy but not intrusive into the Hotel. The Bar in the front garden is a GREAT way to unwind after a day shopping or playing tourist. Great breakfast with good variety and good coffee. The hotel is starting to show its age in the rooms but the overall age and prestige of the hotel and the location balances this out but a revamp or make over must be on the cards shortly??
