“Great time in Como”

Hotel was in a wonderful position, right on lake and walking distance to ferries, funicular, train station etc. even a view from our standard room

“Generally OK”

The indifferent architecture of this reasonably modern hotel sits uneasily among the attractive old buildings in the 3-sided square in which it is located - the 4th side being the lake front. Our 3rd floor room was perfectly adequate - well decorated with a firm bed, an excellent bathroom and a balcony with a fine view of the lake. The remaining furnishings were showing some signs of wear and tear. Although quiet at night, traffic activity in the square starts early in the morning; this encourages an early rise for breakfast which provides a good standard and variety of hot and cold food. Unfortunately, a large exhibition tent in front of the hotel rather obscures the lovely view of the lake from the first floor breakfast room. The hotel is very conveniently situated in the town centre with many good restaurants nearby. The two lady receptionists spoke excellent English and were helpful in every way possible.

Area recommendations

The L'Antica Riva restaurant in Via Lungo Lario Trieste had a nice waterfront ambiance and excellent food. The lake trip to Bellagio was enjoyable, and the town itself is well worth a visit.

“Ideal Como Location”

A well run hotel with pleasant and helpful reception staff. Needs some updating but still comfortable. Views from lake view rooms excellent.

Walks along the lake front.

Getting there

Fly to Milan, Malpensa. Less traffic than from Linata.

“Great place”

We had an excellent stay at the Barchetta Excelsior. The location is perfect with lovely views over the lake and very handy for all forms of transports. The room was clean and comfortable, and very spacious. The staff were friendly and the reception staff were always very helpful. We would stay here again if we go back to Como.

Area recommendations

Piazza Alessandro Volta has some nice cafes to sit and people watch with some nice restaurants close by, including the Ristorante Rino where I had a beautiful steak. The cathedral area is also nice, and I would recommend walking along the lakeside past the villas, including the Villa Olmo. The funicular is a must where you get some gorgeous views over Como, especially if you walk along the road away from the station and church.

“Very Happy to Have found It”

I knew this hotel is well located but was surprised with the quality of the room facilities. It obviously has been thoroughly refurbished recently, and the bathroom and air conditioning are first-rate for an Italian hotel. With the exception of a concert in front of the hotel until 11:15 PM the first night of our stay, we were very pleased with our stay. The room was large enough for us and the bed was very comfortable. The staff was very helpful.

“Very nice hotel.”

I was initially concerned about some of the reviews concerning negative experiance with Expedia but our experience was great and the Joel was great. Everything from service to the room was excellent. Location was close to the train station, water taxi and restaurants.

There where a number of nice ares nearby.

When to go

May weather was around 75 during the day. Great for walking around.

The train (Comoros de Largo) went right into Como, about three blocks from the hotel.

“Needs a facelift”

This hotel has a great location, but needs a faceleift. I selected it because of parking and AC. We did get parking, but it is not located at this hotel. AC would not work because it was not turned on yet and they regulate that so we were warm. Front desk females and lounge staff were wonderful help and that is all I will say. Constuction was in front of hotel as they set up for a May Day event so rooms with a view were noisey.

Traveller's tip

So close to Switzerland, see Lugano. Also, the Tourist Office to left of hotel is very helpful. The store next to it has great prices on silk items. Don't miss out on the area behind the hotel, it has lots of great shopping and places to eat
