“I'll be back”

I loved this hotel. From the moment I arrived I found the staff to be so polite and helpful even to retrieving the hat which I had left on the bus after a city tour. And it was always with a smile and kind words that the staff at the Front Desk greeted and presented me with the key to my room. I was also very touched that on my departure two members of staff carried my luggage to the Kansai Airport shuttle bus and waited outside the hotel to wave me goodbye! Although a little on the small side (but this is Japan!) my room was very comfortable and breakfast on the 17th level of the hotel overlooking the river was a great start to the day. I didn't have any other meals at the hotel but the restaurants looked very attractive albeit on the expensive side. I really enjoyed the convenience of the hotel being located at one of the subway stations. After a long day of walking and being a tourist it was a joy to disappear through the welcoming doors of the hotel and rest very tired feet. Yes, I really enjoyed my stay and look forward to returning to the Kyoto Okura Hotel soon.

Area recommendations
Kyoto is a city on a grid so accessible to trains and buses and good (easy to read and follow) city maps are also provided. However, Downtown Kyoto is very central and it is possible to walk to most places. But if not, there are always plenty of nearby trains and buses to catch.
When to go
For autumn colours mid to late November, preferably late November.
Getting around
Use the subway and buses. So convenient and running at very regular intervals.
Other
The Hozu-Gawa river trip. Shooting gentle rapids in a boat for nearly two hours between Kameoka and Arashiyama north-west of Kyoto. Enjoy outdoors Japan in magnificent mountain surroundings. Hiking across the ridge from Kibune to Kurama north of Kyoto. Callenging but very satisfying.

“A great hotel at a great location”

We spent 9 nights at this hotel and had a wonderful experience overall. The staff is extremely courteous and helpful. The room was always meticulously cleaned. We took advantage of the very knowledgeable concierge who spoke excellent English. Her restaurant and hair stylist recommendations were fully on target. In addition, when we forgot a backpack with valuable content at a coffee shop at the Kyoto station the day we were flying out, the concierge helped us retrieve the backpack by calling the coffee shop and telling them that a friend of ours will pick up the backpack the next day. We were relieved tremendously. Without her help, it would have been near impossible to get our valuables back, since most people do not speak enough English.

Area recommendations
The hotel is right in downtown and also adjacent to Gion.

“Exceptional!”

Every possible detail was considered. If I even looked like I had a question, I was attended to. the subway is really at the bottom of the escalater. So the entire city is easily accessible. We were directed to a nearby Yakatori establishment, to which there is likely no equal. The hotel dinning was great, and the cafe just off the lobby willingly accommodated our requests. Everything about this hotel is first class, and I hope I have an opportunity to stay again. We have paid more for a stay, but never ever had better service.

“We'll be back”

As soon as we alighted the taxi at Hotel Okura we were warmly welcomed and assisted by all the staff with whom we dealt. The twin room was large including a large bathroom with separate bath and shower. There was also ample wardrobe space, often lacking in Japanese hotel rooms. We had requested a room with a view that exceeded our expectations; facing the Kamo-river with the Hirashiyama hills behind. Nice touches in the room included a map of significant sights in the view; robes, night gowns and slippers; bath salts; fluffy towels; a green policy for linen that they actually followed; and comfortable beds. While the windows did not open the air-conditioning worked effectively so the room was not stuffy and a humidifier was provided as in some Japanese hotels. The room and the bathroom were spotless on arrival and continued to be so throughout our stay. Three computers are available in the lobby for free internet use and free wi-fi was also available in the lobby; very useful for finding places in town using Google maps. The laundry service was good and reasonably priced. My only negative comments are that you had to pay an additional fee to use their fitness facilities and the breakfast options were mostly expensive, although excellent quality food and service. This was our second visit to Kyoto and we were impressed with the friendliness and excellent English spoken by the staff. The surrounding area includes great restaurants and the hotel is next to a subway station.

Area recommendations
We recommend staying in downtown Kyoto. It includes many great restaurants and cafes; shopping areas including the Nishiki market and Teramachi mall. It is within easy walking distance to the Gion area with buses and trains available for the further sights. It is about 10–15 minutes in a taxi from Kyoto Station. We enjoy wandering around the streets between Oike and Shijo Streets and eating our way along the Nishiki market from east to west.
When to go
We have been to Kyoto twice. The first time during Sakura season, at the end of March, and the second time at the end of February at the end of Winter. Sakura season when the blossoms open is a beautiful time in Kyoto with many rewarding visits to the gardens in bloom however it is also very busy with local tourists as well as many international tourists. The cost to stay is expensive and the sights are very crowded, including restaurants and the market. While I'm glad to have been in Japan during this seasonal sight you must be prepared to be patient. The second time at the end of Winter the weather was not much colder and the sights were much less crowded. Indeed some of the temples and gardens had only a few people in them at a time. So if you don't care for blossoms then it might be a better time to visit.
Dining
Kyoto offers some of the best restaurants in Japan and offers a variety of Japanese cuisine. We enjoyed eating at specialist restaurants where focus and perfection on select ingredients and preparation was pursued. I recommend reading the Kyoto Foodie blog before you go, as well as a book about Japanese food in general called Food, Sake, Tokyo by Yukari Sakamoto; this is an excellent resource. The Bento.com website is also very useful for recommendations with maps.

“Well located, quality hotel”

This hotel exceeded our expectations. It is exceptionally well located. In a nation reknowned for its expensive hotels, this hotel is a solid value. We can't say much about the restaurants, as we ate out every night. Kyoto is a city of wonderful eateries. I'm certain we could spend a month without a lack of adventurous restaurant experiences. Plan to stay in Kyoto as long as possible. The wonderful experiences are limitless.

Area recommendations
Definitely plan a daytrip to Nara. Put aside between 5 hours to 8 hours for Nara. It's easy to access, lots of fun, and worthy of exploration.

“Steve & Amy”

We have traveled all over Europe and Asia. This hotel was awesome! The staff was very attentive to every one of our requests. Actually received a very nice upgrade to a suite. Our room was a corner room and had widows on 2 walls with a spectacular view of Kyoto. The shower was very nice. The only draw back were the restaurants in the hotel. However, there were many outstanding restaurants within minutes of the hotel. We would definitely go back!

Area recommendations
Gion. Take the Geisha walking tour for only 1,000 yen ($7.80). Outstanding and extremely informative of the secret society of Geisha. See the Silver Shrine and walk the Philosophers path...very relaxing

“Really nice hotel with the best location.”

The hotel was fantastic. Great location, better than any other hotel in Kyoto near shopping, the river and temples. Also really good restaurants just around the corner with great view to the river. The room was perfect, very clean. Also happen that I used the laundry service and it was ridiculous, my shirt was packed just like new! I really recommend this hotel.

Area recommendations
The temples, they are impressive and the best thing to do on a sunny day, I strongly recommend to rent a bicycle it's not to hard and lots of fun.
Getting around
A bicycle is a great way to know Kyoto and some of it's temples. Ask to the hotel staff they sure know where to rent it.
