“Excellent Location & Value”
Great value for the price. Staff very helpful with directions and advice on buses.
“Great hotel in a central location”
The location is very central - walking distance to everywhere in downtown Tokyo and the stop for two metro lines. Arriving from Kyoto station was easy and convenient. Service is friendly and helpful. Hotel room is nice and clean, the bathroom was great. The only minus was that there wasn't really enough space to store our clothes and just barely enough room for our luggage (we were in a standard room). Free Japan Times every morning was appreciated.
“Good Shppoing and Public Transport Location”
Hotel Monterey in Kyoto is in a great location in the centre of town. It is only 5 minutes walk to the Nishiki Markets and surrounding shopping precinct. The public transport facilities are close by - both metro and bus. We used the one day bus passes (sold at the front desk) frequently and proved to be the most effective way of getting around the city. Front desk and room staff were excellent. Very good English spoken at the front desk from all staff. We had a couple of minor room maintenence issues and left notes each day in the room. These were attended to promptly during our daily absences. The room - a standard double - was a bit small for the two of us and the bed was pushed up against the wall on one side making it difficult for one person to get into and out of bed. But small hotel rooms appear normal in Japan and if you want something larger, no doubt you can pay for it. Overall we were satidsfied with the hotel and would select it again if we visited Kyoto.
“Good service, great value”
We selected this hotel based on recommendations online. For the price, it was a very nice room in central Kyoto. We could walk to Gion and the Imperial Palace (15 minutes) and there were plenty of restaurants down the side streets. The hotel was quiet and the bathrooms were immaculate. This hotel caters to the Japanese market, as you can tell by the decor. All of the staff were absolutely wonderful.
“Nice hotel, but breakfast/lunch/dinner are very expensive”
We spent a total of 8 nights at this hotel. We got a good rate of accommodation, but breakfast at 2500yen was very expensive. However, there are many other restaurants nearby that offer excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable cost. Another disadvantage was that Wi Fi was not equipped at this hotel. We took our IPad, but was not able to use it at this hotel. However, it was clean and comfortable, ane the location was excellent.
“Very impressed”
The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance to two subway stations and bus routes to major sightseeing sites. There are several convenience stores, two Starbucks shops, and one small grocery store close by. It is on a trendy street with modern office buildings, book stores, shops selling arts and expensive clothings, etc. The hotel looks very modern and tastefully designed and furnished. Its staff are very polite, some speak good English. The room is large by Japanese standards. We had a small room, which, however, was large enough to accomodate two of us and several pieces of luggage. It is equipped with a LCD television. a refrigerator, and an electric hot water pot. In-room high speed Internet is free. The bathroom is spotlessly clean. Hot water flows out instantly. An abundance of toiletries are provided. The toilet itself is of high-tech construction: heated seat, jet sprays, etc. The room is very quiet, its deco pleasing. We were very impressed. Kyoto has many beautiful sites. Besides the temples and castles, we recommend the Miho Museum, an architectural beauty designed by I. M. Pei.
“Almost perfect but no Internet !!!”
This hotel is well located, clean, the room a good size and close or accessible to most places. But not an Internet connection in site. As a business person, or a tourist, it is now mandatory. I wish I could say I would return because it almost makes it but I cannot because of this issue
“A good hotel in not the greatest part of town”
The biggest drawback is the fact the hotel is quite a way away from most of Kyoto's more interesting sights and locations. The hotel itself was good, even if the mish mash of decor, overpriced eateries and unfortunate location are not enough to persuade you to stay elsewhere. The staff were polite and helpful but we found the location to be particularly inconvenient when looking for things to do of an evening, requiring either a taxi or subway ride to the more lively parts of town. There are plenty of places to eat in the immediate area but if your Japanese is particularly poor you may struggle with finding something.
“Great hotel for a great price!”
My wife and I were very impressed by the Hotel Monterey Kyoto. The price was as low as a bare bones business hotel, but the experience was of a much nicer hotel. The room was not large, but this is in Japan so it is to be expected. The location is great, convenient to multiple subway lines, bus stations, and the Nishiki and Shoji shopping areas. We'll be looking for Hotel Montereys whenever we travel to Japan from now on.
“Modern Whimsy in the Center of Kyoto”
Modern, clean, comfortable, hotel with decent sized rooms right in the center of Kyoto. Good value too. My wife loved the decor, it was a bit "whimsical" for me, but this place hit on all other cylinders. Also it is a block or two from two subway stations and lots of shopping and restaurants. Good value too.
