“Convenient and affordable”

This is the 2nd time we have stayed at the ANA Kyoto hotel and we were not disappointed. The Shuttle bus from Kyoto station (outside McDonalds) makes the trip from Tokyo by train very easy and the staff are very helpful and friendly. The rooms could probably do with a bit of detailing but having said that for the price the size of the room is fabulous. Beds are comfortable and spacious. The Colarado Coffee Shop around the corner is lovely for breakfast and does a set menu for Y640 including a coffee or tea - nice gentele atmosphere plus a bakery on site to pick up a few sandwiches or pastries for your busy day exploring the many temples around Kyoto. Subway closeby but if there are 4 or more people in the group a taxi from Gion works out cheaper back to the hotel. Would stay there again on our next visit to Kyoto.

Area recommendations
Definitely visit Fushimi temple and the other temples in the same area which you can walk to. Gion around 5pm when the Geisha come out to head off to work is a must see. The whole area is very interesting as it gives you a snapshot of what the rest of Kyoto would have looked like years ago. There are so many temples around Kyoto that should be explored heading out in all directions. The JR pass is great to use as once you are out of the city travel the pass covers the cost.
Getting around
We did a day trip to Hiroshima (2 hrs on the bullet) and a day trip to Nara, also a must see place (30 mins on the express JR). The largest bronze Buddah in the world is wonderful.

“Great value for money”

Through Expedia we got a tremendous price for 4 nights at this four star hotel - for a big comfortable room. The ANA is a very large hotel so not so intimate but in a great location near Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace.

Area recommendations
I recommend you talk with staff at the Information Desk who can prepare a map with relevant sites and how to get there. There are a lot of important temples and sites to visit in Kyoto and buses, trains and trams to get you there.
Family-friendly activities
We recommend you look up JSK Tours which is a non for profit group that can provide a Japanese lesson and day long walking tour. They are keen to practice their English and show the beauty of Kyoto.

“probably one of the worst hotels i ever stayed in”

no way this is a 4 star hotel. it is in desperate need of renovation i felt like i was taken back to the 70s or 80s, the rooms are depressing and the bathrooms a joke (everything out of yellow beige plastic, disgusting). breakfast buffett is below average, very low quality products, for example the fruits they provide are generally out of a can. would not recommend to stay at this hotel, surely there is a better option in kyoto.

“comfortable hotel”

ANA Kyoto is a comfortable hotel in a reasonably convenient location. Close to the subway and over the road from Nijo jo. Eating possibilities outside the hotel in close proximity were pretty limited but easy to get to where the action is, either on the hotel shuttle to Kyoto station or the subway . Also close to bus stops to most places you might want to go to. Shuttle stops at 8pm which is a shame.

“Excellent place to stay”

Kyoto is a wonderful city and the Ana Hotel is placed right next to a great attraction, the Nijo Castle. Other attractions are not far away and the hotel makes a great base to start the exploring from. It is also very luxurious and the room was just great, with enough space for us both to be very comfortable.

Area recommendations
Try the Gion district. It is charming and has many shrines and temples as well as great shops to check out.

“Family of 4 w/ 2 teenagers - August 2010”

Nice hotel, well located and easily reachable from the train station with a courtesy minibus travelling every 30mns. Rooms are spacious, clean and have all amenities; decoration is a bit dated. Overall hotel are more up to date. Staff is courteous and helpful. The hotel is within a short taxi fare of many restaurants and places of interest. The hotel also arranged bicycle rentals for us and this was a lot of fun and very convenient for temple and shrine hopping. Note that there are not very restaurants close by the hotel. Overall, we liked the hotel and would stay there again.

Area recommendations
The ANA has a free minibus pickup from the Kyoto train station every 30mns by the MacDonald, on the back side of the station. The hotel is well located, clean and welcoming. Staff is attentive and friendly. The rooms are a bit dated but otherwise fairly roomy, have the necessary amenities and are very clean. For a city like Kyoto which is probably the first destination of foreigners visiting Japan, there could be a greater effort to translate services in English. Example: - the restaurants in the lower level have menus available by the entrance - in Japanese only. - there was a beer garden on the roof but the sign indicating 'Beer Garden' gave no other details in Engish.
When to go
April-June or Sep-Oct are likely best months. July and August are hot and humid.
Getting there
Train from Osaka takes just over 1 hour.
Dining
Only 2-3 restaurants are close enough to walk to; The rest require taxis but a great deal of restaurants are within a Y1000 taxi fare. KushiKura is a nice Yakitori place about 10mns walking. Very Japanese, friendly but busy - reservations are advised. The hotel can help with that. We had breakfast at the hotel and recommend the buffet over ordering from the menu.

“ANA hotel”

Hotel rooms were spacious. Hotel bus shuttle from rail station excellent. Free internet in reception area good. The lack of 'environmental' policies concerned us. There was a lot of extra things you did not need. Prices for breakfast etc too expensive for ordinary traveller. Location of hotel too far from station if hotel shuttle had not been available. We used the Colorado coffe shop near by to buy nice pastries for breakfast. We would not stay again though as there seems to be too much 'waste' for our consciences. We had to ask for cups fo0r coffee - western style. Rooms did not have black tea or coffee available like 'less' pricye hotel we stayed in.

Area recommendations
Areas that are nearer to shopping areas. The ANA hotel is near the Castle but nothing else.

“A great stop in Kyoto"”

" Very comfortable hotel close to train station, and provides regular free transfers from hotel to station. Has a tour desk to assist with getting around the local area. Easy walk of a few minutes to convenience stores and restaurants. No internet reception in room, with one free computer downstairs in lobby for internet access. Breakfasts were very tasty in the dining room.
