"Cozy, value hotel, at great central location."
A very cozy hotel that was a great value for London. The staff was friendly, the rooms are comfortable but small, but if you just need a comfy bed to sleep in, a shower, and a place to park your gear while you explore the city and the country then it's perfect. The double-bed room would feel a bit cramped if sharing with someone else for more than a couple of days. Fans are provided and windows open, as there is no a/c, although the area is high-traffic so there will be street noise (pedestrians, commuters, ambulances/police), a consideration if you visiting during a heat wave and are a light sleeper. WiFi was not very good in my room on the 4th floor but it seemed to be ok for my companions elsewhere in the building.
The California is right across the street from St Pancras and Kings Cross stations--a major nexus for tube, train, and bus lines and very easy to get around everywhere from, and the area has recently been redeveloped and features lots of shops and restaurants. Getting in and out is easy - it's just two easy trains to or from Heathrow (through Paddington) and much cheaper than a taxi unless you're in a group. It's a 15 minute walk or a just a few tube stops from the British Museum, and not much further to Buckingham, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Coven Gardens, Trafalgar Square, or anyplace else you'd like to visit. Would definitely recommend.
