“Good room - too expensive”
Hotels in the UK are famously overpriced - but his was the most expensive room I had in 17 days of travel and was the least worth the price. The interior of the room was nice, clean and spacious but was in a separate building which had an odd, awkward door lock and my room was right on the street so I could not open the window and I had street noise during the afternoon. The location is convenient for the old part of town but the immediate surrounding neighborhood is not particularly attractive.
“Excellent Weekend Retreat”
The Falstaff Hotel is situated in the heart of Canterbury just outside the City Gate. The staff are helpfull and the Hotel clean and comfortable, cannot be compared to a modern hotel as most of it dates from the 15th - 16th century. Conveniently situated away from the hustle and bustle but within 5 minutes walk of Canterbury's nightlife and excellent pubs and restaurants and of course the magnificent Cathedral. The Falstaff Hotel does not have a restaurant on site but did provide an excellent all in breakfast in it's dining room. Parking is free and secure. Well worth visiting.
“600 year old hotel done right! Loved the character of this place.”
If you like historic places and can handle a flight of stairs, then this is the place for you. The staff was great at this picturesque Canterbury hotel. it is just outside the old city gate and its an easy walk through the gate to the inner part of the city. Every staff member we talked to was friendly and attentive, but Emily at the front desk was a shining star of the place. She was charming and could help with everything from getting a room phone fixed and placing calls to reserving a table for you at a good pub. She also gave great recommendations on places to go for a drink or a meal. Be aware that there is no air conditioning so you need to open the windows to cool the room. This was fine since the weather was cool at night even in August, but if you have asthma there can be some fumes and cigarette smoke from the street side window. The hotel provided us with a fan, however, so we pushed the air out that window and it was fine. They also served a nice english breakfast so you can fill up before exploring the city. Remember there is no lift, so pack light since you'll have to get your luggage upstairs. Although it isn't a modern 5 star hotel, I liked it quite a lot. The Falstaff is a lovely old place in a charming little city. I would definately go back.
“Cool place in Cool Canterbury”
We were charmed with this ancient little hotel. It really is a group of old buildings that have been renovated to create a lovely respot after the hustle and bustle of London. Nothing is as precious as Canterbury...full of old buildings and great food. This hotel is actually steps from the main gate of the town. GREAT choice
“Brilliant location, but room choice important”
We stopped our first night on the first floor of this beilliantly located hotel and found the centuries old floorboards creaked quite loudly, but not as loudly as the patrons departing the adjacent premises. But the visit was greatly improved by moving to a Wood Mill room in a separate (but very close) building. These rooms are more modern and much quieter. There is a bus stop at the door which gives very direct access to the bus station, from which you can travel all over Kent and parts of East Sussex, using a gold mega pass (£19 for a week). As the old town of Canterbury is very walkable, there's no need to rent a car there, because of this bus service.
“Great location for exploring the city on foot.”
The best points were the character, location and parking at the hotel which meant we could walk into Canterbury very easily. The breakfast was good and the staff were very accommodating supplying Worcestershire sauce when asked, and a spare key. Though tastefully decorated, our room was in one of the outer extensions and was very small. It was adjacent to the road, prone to noise at night and the facilities and decor of the bathroom were poor. Considering these points and the fact that it was February, I don't think the price we paid was fair.
“Charecturful hotel”
A pleasant old coaching inn full of character.A shame the breakfast chef was kept away by the snow.I had looked forward to doing to some damage to a traditional full english.Everything else was very pleasant and I would not hesitate to return.
“Excellent value”
Well positioned with excellent parking. Some areas would benefit from a repaint. Generous breakfast. Comfortable lounge. Plenty of restaurants nearby.
“Hotel full of history for a city full of history”
We were delighted with this hotel, it was so full of character. Despite being over 500 years old it had all the modern cons. Staff were friendly, breakfast was fantastic and I was very impressed with the sized of the rooms.
“Horrible Experience in Hell (so hot)”
When we got there, they shoved us in some back alley annex building. Our room was spacious, but quite dingy. It was also on the street level of a main road, where drunk college students walk by screaming at all hours of the night. It was quite hot when we were at the Falstaff and our room did not have have a window that would open or Air Conditioning. We asked for a fan as our room was at least 85F degrees, if not hotter, and were denied. They also stated that they did not have a different room with a window that opened. That would be fine, except that they had a sign out on the street stating that they had vacancies and the following morning, we overheard the management stating that they had lots of available rooms. The location was good and the breakfast was okay, but don't expect any kind of service or assistance from the staff. As a side note, we spent 2 weeks traveling in England and this was by far the worse place we stayed at our price point during our stay.
