Cheap And Sort Of Cheerful Hostel

Posted 21-Jun-2014
PROS: Price, proximity to rail station & town centre & sea front, good wi fi in the room, flat screen TV in rooms (at least - mine did - room 8). CONS: traffic noise (even in a room at the back). Breakfast only served between 0700-0800 weekdays (even though latest checkout time is 1000). Room cancellation policy is a minimum of 48 hrs beforehand, which is pretty restrictive in this day & age. And even then there is a cancellation fee. To be fair I was aware of this from the hostel website, before booking. But it doesn't help when your travel plans change and I had to cut short my Dover trip part way through. OBSERVATIONS: on checking in - was told not to drink the water from the room taps (only from the guest kitchen tap). Not sure if this was a ploy to keep water usage down, as the sink/plumbing in my room looked brand new. Access to rooms is via a step narrow staircase with tight corners - not easy if you have hefty luggage or are less able bodied. Need to pre order the 'full English breakfast' if you want it. The Spar mini supermarket in petrol station opposite the hostel is very useful for provisions. SUMMARY: An ok stay. Not the Ritz, but then again - it's not meant to be. But it is a useful place for a budget visit.

Great location

Posted 14-May-2014
It is not much to look at from the outside but rooms are clean and comfortable and extremely small. Excellent location. Close to ferries, busses and town square. Nice breakfast. "Tamarra" was very helpful and accommodating. I would stay again.

Great stay before a cruise

Posted 13-May-2014
Location: Walking distance to the cliffs of dover, castle and cruise line
Better than expected. Yes the stairs are steep and narrow but the room, staff and breakfast where great. I would definitely stay here again but with a smaller suitcase.

fine for one night

good location, easy to find shops and food and get to the ferry port. the room had everything we needed and was clean- a little cold though! We didn't stay for breakfast and the owner seemed to want to just leave you to it. Outside appearance and the owner made me feel on edge but once in the room it was fine.

Pros: cleanliness, everything new, services
Cons: sound insulation
Location: there is a 24 hours petrol station with a mini market, the station and the town centre are at walking distance
I've stayed at the hostel Alma one night before the ferry, I've found the room clean, warm and the staff is gentle. I haven't tried the breakfast because I left early the morning after but I found a nice and clean kitchen area where to prepare mine. The sound insulation is not great, sometimes I was able to hear someone speaking but it was ok.

Excellent for the night before the ferry.

Pros: The owner was excellent and runs a good facility.
Cons: The outside looks poor compared to the inside, the room, the breakfast and the service which were all excellent.

Very good, I like the way they are making the place social, every night some special event for guest which is very innovative.
