Great location being a short walk from the center of Canterbury. The staff was very friendly and tried their best to help, but I got the impression that the owner of the hotel cared little for the property. Our room had stains all over the rug, cobwebs in the windows, a moldy bath mat folded up in the corner beside the shower, a broken lamp, a hole in the wall behind the bed, and dysfunctional lights in the bathroom mirror.
It's a shame because with a little money and effort this property could be very charming. Unfortunately "dingy" is the word that comes to mind. Now if this was a hostel and I had been paying hostel prices for my stay I would be able to overlook most of this. However at over £100/night this should not be.
Kudos to the staff for remaining upbeat and helpful, even apologizing for the rough conditions of the hotel. One gentleman in particular retrieved and cleaned an extra fan for our room and was very helpful. So nothing at all against the staff, however they gave me the impression that my complaints were not new to them and that the owner could care less to address them.
By far the worst place we have stayed so far on our honeymoon. You know something is wrong when a 14th century inn is far nicer than a 19th century one.
