“Lived up to and Exceeded our Expectations”
We selected this hotel because of the many positive comments from travelers who stayed there previously and because of its location on the south shore, which receives less rain than the north or east coast of the island. I must say we really didn't expect it to live up to its glowing comments, but we can honestly say it is one of the best hotels we've ever experienced.
All the staff are competent, attentive, and genuinely friendly. The management screened them well and hired top-notch people, who really like other people. The quality of service is outstanding--something that is hard to find in this commercial day and age. The faciliites were very nice and well-maintained. It was a good location, although meals there (indeed, most places in Kauai were expensive); that's the only expense we underestimated.
If you go on the meal plan, breakfast is included and is very tasty and low key. The environment is extremely pleasant, and there are other good restaurants near by or within an easy drive. Gratuities are included in the meal plan, and staff don't look for "extra". We chose to send a letter with a bonus gratuity for all staff when we returned, to express our appreciation for their excellent services.
There are other larger hotels, and some may have more services, but we were very satisfied with the Koa Kea and believed it to be outstanding value for the money we spent there. We highly recommend it without reservation for those who prefer quality over "bigness".
Area recommendations
We stayed in Poipu (the south shore), which is certainly an excellent location. However, I'm sure there are other equally fine locations. The island is geared toward tourism, although it has a much less commercial feel than many similar locations.
The whole island is very relaxing and there is something for everyone, whether you are seeking activities, beaches, or just plain relaxation. It's all there, and in a very laid-back and absolutely beautiful environment.
Dining
We underestimated the cost of meals there, which are very expensive, at least as much as you would spend in the larger and higher cost metropolitan areas within the continental U.S. I would plan a similar amount for daily expenses as you would for going to one of the 8 or 10 largest cities in the continental US. The food is excellent, but definitely more pricey than we anticipated.
Helicopter Ride: We booked a helicopter tour of the island in advance. It sounds pricey when you look at the expense initially, but it was worth every penny. There are parts of the Napali coast and mountain ranges that are inaccessible except by foot for only the hardiest and most fit. in addition, the helicopter ride gives you a panoramic and breathtaking view of the beauty of the island. It's an experience you'll never forget, and they make a DVD of your flight (reasonably priced) so that you can look at it over and over again, and share a little of your trip vicariously with your family, friends, and neighbors.
