“Could be Better”
Hotel needs to be updated. Old furnishings and still uses keys to open hotel room. Definitely not your average hotel that has cards to open the door. But you can't go wrong with the affordability. If you are on a budget and want cheap prices, this is the spot. This is definitely the place to stay if you don't care about luxury and just need a bed and shower.
“Okay hotel”
The rooms and facilities are okay, the price is great and the location is pretty good for exploring the island. There are also some restaurants quite close-by, especially the Cafe Coco offers good dinner at reasonable prices. The beach is right in front of the hotel - the hotel could put some more chairs there to make it a bit more comfortable for guests to stay there, but apart from that it's a nice beach and swimming is great. The one thing that I really, really didn't like was the Internet service. Wireless is not complimentary, it's an extra charge per day, and it's not offered by the hotel but a third party provider called ShakaNet. Now that by itself would still be okay, it was also disclosed as such on the hotel's description page. But the internet provider is really bad, the connection was really, really slow. And then paying a quite high extra amount every day for a bad service is not so great. But the only alternative is to be without internet...
“Fine for the price”
I had just spent a week at a luxury condo with full kitchen in Princeville and went to the Kauai Sands to spend a couple more days before leaving Kauai. It wasn't a luxury condo. But on the other hand, it didn't cost around a couple hundred dollars a night. The room was clean, bed was comfortable, no bugs, a half-decent chair to sit in and a small refrigerator. Very pleasant beach to sit on, a little rough for swimming, but nicer beaches were very nearby. Right next door to a little shopping complex with some moderate priced food, just a block or two south of Kapaa for anything else you wanted. Cost was very low. I thought it was a very good deal for the price. If money is no object, stay somewhere fancier. If all you want is a clean, quiet and pleasant room a ways back from the highway, you'll like this place. I don't go to Hawaii to sit in a room anyway, and Kapaa is a nice location to go both directions to explore the island. You need to rent a car in Kauai if you want to see anything.
“Decent budget place in Kauai”
The Kauai Sands is an older hotel. First, we got a smoker's room, but were able to switch to a non-smoking room. Staff at the reception was very helpful and friendly. Rooms are basic. The interior is old, but clean. The hotel is located on a beach and central in Kapa'a with many nearby choices for breakfast, dinner etc. The area the hotel is located in looked safe. The deals you can get on this hotel are unbeatable.
“Very nice room service.”
Ok so its not your luxury hotel but everyone there is very nice, you have the beach right next to you, and you have a very convenience hotel location.
“Old School Kauai”
We stayed here one night before moving on to the South Shore, and we found the Kauai Sands a charming trip back to a time before all the development in Kauai. The rooms were clean, if spartanly furnished, and close to Kapaa, decent food options, and shopping. Don't expect the Grand Hyatt and you won't be disappointed. The lobby is open air, furnished nicely and open very late (maybe all night?) for fairly cheap and fast internet access. Remember, it's a 40 year old hotel, but for our purposes, it suited us just fine, and after a few days at the overly crowded South Shore, and having to drive an hour to get back to the East or North Shores, we were wishing we were back at the Kauai Sands.
“Kauai sands ok”
Kauai Sands hotel is not the best hotel. The owners certainly do not maintain it at all. There are two pools, but one was out of commission and the other had multiple broken tiles and sidewalk stones around it. There were cones and yellow tape that said "caution" throughout my 2 week stay. I felt that they had no intention of fixing these things anytime soon. The maids were great- kept the room clean. I only saw one cockroach throughout my stay in the hotel. Honestly, you get what you pay for. The hotel isn't wonderful, but I've stayed in worse.
“Has all the basics”
If you're looking for a clean place to sleep after you've spent your days out exploring Kauai, this is the place. It is older and not as fancy as resort hotels but has all the basics. It is clean, comfortable, and convenient. I would stay here again. Save some money for the adventures you'll have around the island and stay in this budget hotel.
“Clean quiet room, second stay”
We have visited the Sands a second time. This is a clean but dated hotel. Very basic amenities. Very nice location next to the ocean. Swam in the pool a lot. The Sands really could use a bit more maintenance, but it is clean and the money we saved went to other activities. No coffee makers in the rooms makes a morning coffee run necessary. We saw no bugs, room was kept very clean by housekeeping. Great value very nice staff, good aloha spirit. I would pony up the little extra for the deluxe pool view.
“Old hotel seen it's best days”
Old hotel that could use some renovation, but you get what you pay for. The room was clean, though there was a quite storng smell of smoking stuck in the walls. Friendly staff and good location close to Kapa'a. Easy to access by bus if you don't have a car, and in walking distance from the restaurants and shops in town.
